2¶ And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. 3And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. 4Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: 5For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
6¶ Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: 7But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.
8¶ Then Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born. 9And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10And the woman made haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. 11And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. 12And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?13.12 How shall we order…: Heb. 15¶ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee.13.15 for thee: Heb. before thee 16And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD. 17And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour? 18And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?13.18 secret: or, wonderful 19So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on. 20For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. 21But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD. 22And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. 23But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.

1En weer zondigden de Israëlieten tegen de Here door afgoden te aanbidden. Daarom liet de Here toe dat zij veertig jaar lang door de Filistijnen werden onderdrukt.
2-3 Op een dag verscheen de Engel van de Here aan de vrouw van Manoah van de stam Dan, zij woonde in de stad Zora. De Engel zei tegen deze vrouw, die geen kinderen had: ‘U bent lang onvruchtbaar geweest, maar nu zult u in verwachting raken en een zoon krijgen. 4Denk erom dat u geen wijn of sterke drank drinkt en dat u niets eet dat onrein is. 5Het haar van uw zoon mag nooit worden geknipt, want hij zal vanaf zijn geboorte een Nazireeër, een speciale dienaar van God zijn. Hij zal de aanzet geven tot de bevrijding van Israël uit de macht van de Filistijnen.’
6De vrouw haastte zich naar haar man om het hem te vertellen. ‘Er is een Man van God bij mij geweest,’ zei ze. ‘Ik denk dat het de Engel van God was, want Hij zag er zeer indrukwekkend uit. Ik heb niet gevraagd waar Hij vandaan kwam en Hij heeft mij zijn naam niet gezegd. 7Hij zei tegen mij: “U zult een zoon krijgen!” En Hij zei ook dat ik geen wijn of sterke drank mocht drinken en niets mocht eten wat niet rein was. Want de baby zal een Nazireeër zijn, hij zal aan God zijn gewijd vanaf het moment van zijn geboorte tot de dag waarop hij sterft!’ 8Toen bad Manoah: ‘Och Here, laat alstublieft die Man van God nog eens terugkomen om ons te vertellen wat we moeten doen met het kind dat zal worden geboren.’ 9God verhoorde het gebed en de Engel van God kwam opnieuw bij de vrouw, toen ze in het veld was. Maar ze was weer alleen, Manoah was niet bij haar, 10daarom rende ze vlug naar haar man en zei: ‘Diezelfde Man is er weer!’ 11Manoah ging meteen met haar mee en vroeg, toen ze bij de Man waren gekomen: ‘Bent u de Man die onlangs met mijn vrouw heeft gesproken?’ ‘Ja, dat ben Ik,’ antwoordde Hij. 12Toen vroeg Manoah Hem: ‘Kunt u ons nog meer vertellen over hoe we de jongen moeten opvoeden wanneer hij eenmaal is geboren?’ 13De Engel van de Here antwoordde: ‘Zorg ervoor dat uw vrouw zich houdt aan wat Ik haar heb gezegd. 14Zij mag niets eten van de wijnstok—dus geen druiven of rozijnen—en geen wijn of sterke drank drinken of iets eten wat onrein is. Zij moet zich stipt houden aan wat Ik haar heb geboden.’ 15Toen zei Manoah tegen de Engel van de Here: ‘Blijf alstublieft nog even hier, dan zullen wij iets te eten voor U halen.’ 16‘Ik wil wel blijven,’ antwoordde de Engel van de Here, ‘maar zal niets eten. Maar als u toch iets wilt geven, breng het dan als brandoffer aan de Here.’ (Manoah besefte immers nog niet dat het de Engel van de Here was). 17Toen vroeg Manoah Hem hoe Hij heette. ‘Want als dit allemaal uitkomt en de baby is geboren,’ zei hij, ‘dan willen we iedereen vertellen dat U het hebt voorspeld!’ 18‘Waarom wilt u mijn naam weten?’ antwoordde de Engel, ‘die is onuitsprekelijk.’
19Toen offerde Manoah op een rotsblok een geitenbokje en een spijsoffer aan de Here. En terwijl Manoah en zijn vrouw toekeken, gebeurde er een wonder. 20Toen het vuur op het altaar hoog oplaaide, steeg de Engel—voor de ogen van Manoah en zijn vrouw—in het vuur omhoog! Manoah en zijn vrouw wierpen zich plat op de grond. 21Dat was het laatste dat ze ooit van Hem zagen. Manoah was de eerste die besefte dat het de Engel van de Here was geweest. 22‘Wij zullen sterven,’ riep hij tegen zijn vrouw, ‘want we hebben God gezien!’ 23Maar zijn vrouw zei: ‘Als de Here ons had willen doden, zou Hij ons brandoffer en ons spijsoffer niet hebben geaccepteerd en niet aan ons zijn verschenen of ons deze geweldige belofte hebben gegeven en deze wonderen hebben gedaan.’
24Toen hun zoon werd geboren, noemden zij hem Simson. De jongen groeide op onder de zegen van de Here. 25En de Geest van de Here leidde hem steeds weer naar het legerkamp van Dan tussen de steden Zora en Estaol.
