1And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, 2Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, 3And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night. 4Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man: 5And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: 6That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?4.6 in time…: Heb. to morrow 7Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. 8And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 9And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
10¶ For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over. 11And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. 12And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: 13About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.4.13 prepared: or, ready armed
14¶ On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life. 15And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, 16Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan. 17Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan. 18And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.4.18 lifted…: Heb. plucked up4.18 flowed: Heb. went
19¶ And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.
20And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. 21And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?4.21 in time…: Heb. to morrow 22Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. 23For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: 24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.4.24 for ever: Heb. all days
دوازده سنگ يادبود
1وقتی تمام افراد قوم اسرائيل به سلامت از رودخانه گذشتند، خداوند به يوشع فرمود: 2-3«اكنون به آن دوازده نفر كه از دوازده قبيله انتخاب شده‌اند بگو كه بروند و دوازده سنگ از وسط رودخانه، جايی كه كاهنان آنجا ايستاده‌اند، بيرون بياورند و آن سنگها را با خود به همان مكانی ببرند كه امشب اردو می‌زنند تا به عنوان يادبود، آنها را روی هم قرار دهند.»
4پس يوشع آن دوازده نفر را احضار كرد 5و به ايشان گفت: «به ميان رودخانه، جايی كه كاهنان با صندوق عهد ايستاده‌اند، برويد و هر يک از شما يک سنگ بر دوش خود بگذاريد و بياوريد، يعنی دوازده سنگ به تعداد دوازده قبيلهٔ اسرائيل. 6ما آنها را به عنوان يادبود در اينجا می‌گذاريم تا وقتی در آينده فرزندانتان بپرسند: اين سنگها چيست؟ 7به ايشان بگوييد كه اين يادگار روزی است كه جريان آب رود اردن قطع شد و در ميان آن، راه خشكی پديد آمد تا صندوق عهد خداوند از آن عبور كند! اين سنگها برای قوم اسرائيل يادگاری جاودانه از اين معجزهٔ بزرگ خواهند بود.»
8آن دوازده نفر مطابق دستور يوشع عمل نمودند و دوازده سنگ از وسط رودخانه آوردند، درست همانگونه كه خداوند به يوشع فرموده بود، يعنی برای هر قبيله يک سنگ. سنگها را به محلی كه در آنجا توقف نموده بودند بردند و يادبودی بنا كردند. 9يوشع در وسط رودخانه، جايی كه كاهنان ايستاده بودند نيز دوازده سنگ ديگر به عنوان يادگار روی هم گذاشت كه تا به امروز باقيست.
10كاهنان با صندوق عهد آنقدر در وسط رودخانه ماندند تا قوم اسرائيل آنچه را كه خداوند به يوشع فرموده بود به انجام رساندند، درست همانگونه كه موسی به يوشع توصيه كرده بود. پس قوم اسرائيل با شتاب از رود اردن گذشتند، 11و پس از آنكه به آن سوس رودخانه رسيدند، كاهنان هم با صندوق عهد از رودخانه بيرون آمدند. 12-13مردان جنگی قبايل رئوبين، جاد و نصف قبيلهٔ منسی كه چهل هزار نفر بودند مسلح شدند و چنانكه موسی پيش از فوت خود به ايشان گفته بود، پيشاپيش بقيهٔ قوم عبور كرده، در حضور خداوند، به سوی دشت اريحا پيش رفتند.
14در آن روز، خداوند يوشع را در نظر تمام قوم اسرائيل سرافراز نمود. قوم اسرائيل، يوشع را در تمام مدت عمرش مانند موسی احترام می‌كردند.
15-17يوشع به امر خداوند به كاهنانی كه صندوق عهد را حمل می‌كردند گفت: «از بستر رود بيرون بياييد.» 18به محض اينكه كاهنان بيرون آمدند، آب رودخانه دوباره به جريان افتاد و مانند قبل بر كناره‌هايش نيز جاری شد. 19اين معجزه در روز دهم ماه اول اتفاق افتاد. آن روز، تمام مردم اسرائيل از رود اردن گذشتند و در جلجال، در سمت شرقی شهر اريحا اردو زدند. 20در آنجا دوازده سنگی را كه از وسط رودخانه آورده بودند، به عنوان يادبود روی هم گذاشتند.
21بار ديگر يوشع مفهوم آن سنگها را برای قوم اسرائيل بيان كرد: «در آينده اگر فرزندانتان بپرسند: اين توده سنگها در اينجا برای چيست؟ 22به آنها بگوييد كه اين سنگها يادآور عبور معجزآسای قوم اسرائيل از ميان رود اردن است!» 23برای ايشان توضيح دهيد كه چگونه خداوند جريان آب را قطع كرد و از وسط رودخانه، راه خشكی پديد آورد تا همهٔ شما عبور كنيد! اين شبيه معجزه‌ای است كه خداوند چهل سال قبل انجام داد، وقتی دريای سرخ را شكافت و از وسط آن، راه خشكی برای عبور بنی‌اسرائيل پديد آورد. 24خداوند اين معجزه را انجام داد تا همهٔ مردم جهان بدانند كه قدرت او عظيم است و همچنين شما نيز هميشه او را اطاعت كنيد.
