1The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying, 2Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses: 3That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. 6And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
7¶ And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.20.7 appointed: Heb. sanctified 8And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
Desemnarea cetăților de refugiu
(Num. 35:6-34; Deut. 4:41-43; 19:1-14)
1Atunci Domnul i‑a vorbit lui Iosua, zicând: 2„Vorbește‑le fiilor lui Israel și spune‑le: «Alegeți‑vă cetățile de refugiu despre care v‑am vorbit prin Moise. 3Ele vor fi un loc de refugiu pentru ucigașul care va omorî fără voie o persoană (adică din greșeală) și care va vrea să scape de răzbunătorul sângelui. 4Când se va refugia într‑una dintre aceste cetăți, să se oprească la intrarea porții cetății și să vorbească despre situația sa4 Lit.: să vorbească cuvintele sale. în auzul bătrânilor acelei cetăți. Ei să‑l primească în cetate și să‑i dea un loc ca să locuiască împreună cu ei. 5Dacă răzbunătorul sângelui îl va urmări, ei să nu‑l dea pe ucigaș în mâinile lui, deoarece l‑a ucis fără voie pe semenul său, fără să‑l fi urât mai dinainte. 6Ucigașul să rămână în cetatea aceea până se va înfățișa înaintea comunității ca să fie judecat și6 Sau: ori. până la moartea marelui preot care va fi în slujbă în acea perioadă. Numai atunci se va putea întoarce din cetatea în care fugise în cetatea și în casa lui.»“
7Ei au pus deoparte7 Lit.: au sfințit. Verbul poate avea sensul de a pune pe cineva/ceva într‑o stare specială (fizic sau spiritual), a consacra, a pune deoparte pentru Dumnezeu (uneori printr‑un ritual de ungere cu ulei sau sânge, spălare și/sau rugăciune ori declarație publică). Kedeșul, în Galileea, în muntele lui Neftali, Șechemul, în muntele lui Efraim și Chiriat-Arba (Hebron), în muntele lui Iuda. 8Iar de cealaltă parte a Iordanului, la răsărit de Ierihon, au ales Bețerul, în pustie, în podișul seminției lui Ruben, Ramotul, în Ghilad, pe teritoriul seminției lui Gad, și Golanul, în Bașan, pe teritoriul seminției lui Manase. 9Acestea erau cetățile alese pentru toți fiii lui Israel și pentru străinii care locuiau în mijlocul lor, pentru ca orice ucigaș care omora fără voie o persoană să poată fugi acolo și să nu fie omorât de răzbunătorul sângelui înainte de a se înfățișa în fața comunității.
