1And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, 3And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. 4And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 5And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.11.5 met…: Heb. assembled by appointment
6¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. 7So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. 8And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.11.8 great Zidon: or, Zidonrabbah11.8 Misrephoth-maim: or, Salt pits: Heb. 21¶ And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 22There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. 23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
Israel besiegt die Königreiche des nördlichen Kanaan
1Als Jabin, der König von Hazor, hörte, was geschehen war, sandte er Boten zu allen Herrschern des nördlichen Kanaan, um sich mit ihnen gegen Israel zu verbünden: zu König Jobab von Madon, zu den Königen von Schimron und Achschaf, 2zu den Königen im nördlichen Bergland, in den Niederungen südlich von Genezareth, im westlichen Hügelland und im Küstengebiet von Dor. 3Weitere Boten schickte er zu den Kanaanitern im Osten und Westen, den Amoritern, Hetitern und Perisitern, den Jebusitern im Bergland und den Hiwitern am Berg Hermon im Gebiet von Mizpa.
4Alle diese Könige brachen mit ihren Truppen auf; es war ein riesiges Heer mit einer ungeheuren Menge Soldaten, Pferden und Kriegswagen, unzählbar wie der Sand am Meer. 5Sie versammelten sich an der Quelle bei Merom und schlugen ihr Lager auf, um von dort gegen Israel in den Kampf zu ziehen.
6Der Herr aber sprach zu Josua: »Hab keine Angst vor ihnen! Ich selbst kämpfe für euch. Bis morgen um diese Zeit liefere ich sie an euch aus und lasse sie alle in der Schlacht umkommen. Dann sollt ihr den Pferden die Sehnen durchschneiden und die Kriegswagen verbrennen.«
7Josua führte sein Heer unbemerkt zur Quelle Merom, dicht an das feindliche Lager heran, und überraschte die Kanaaniter mit einem Angriff. 8Der Herr verhalf den Israeliten zum Sieg: Sie schlugen ihre Feinde und verfolgten sie nach Norden bis zur großen Stadt Sidon, bis Misrefot-Majim und östlich bis in das Tal von Mizpa. Keiner der Fliehenden entkam. 9Den erbeuteten Pferden ließ Josua die Sehnen durchschneiden, und die Streitwagen ließ er verbrennen, wie es der Herr befohlen hatte.
Israel nimmt das nördliche Kanaan ein
10Nach der Schlacht führte Josua sein Heer nach Hazor, der Hauptstadt aller Königreiche, deren Truppen sie gerade besiegt hatten. Die Israeliten eroberten die Stadt und töteten ihren König. 11Dann brachten sie alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert um. Niemanden ließen sie am Leben, denn Gott hatte die Stadt und alles darin zur Vernichtung bestimmt. Zuletzt brannten die Israeliten Hazor nieder.
12Alle Städte der Könige, die sich gegen Israel verbündet hatten, nahm Josua ein und vollstreckte an ihnen Gottes Gericht: Er vernichtete sie, wie es Mose, der Diener des Herrn, angeordnet hatte. 13Niederbrennen ließ er jedoch nur Hazor. Die anderen Städte auf den Hügeln ließ er stehen. 14Alles Gut und Vieh, das dort zu finden war, behielten die Israeliten als Beute. Die Menschen aber töteten sie mit dem Schwert, bis alle vernichtet waren; keinen einzigen ließen sie am Leben. 15So hatte der Herr es Mose befohlen, und Mose hatte es an Josua weitergegeben, der sich genau daran hielt. Er befolgte alle Weisungen, die Mose vom Herrn bekommen hatte.
16Josua nahm ganz Kanaan ein: das Gebirge, die gesamte Wüste Negev, das ganze Gebiet von Goschen11,16 Vgl. die Anmerkung zu Kapitel 10,41., das Hügelland zwischen dem Mittelmeer und dem Bergland, die Jordan-Ebene und die Berge Israels, 17alles Land zwischen dem kahlen Gebirge bei Seïr im Süden und Baal-Gad in der Ebene vor dem Libanon am Fuß des Hermon. Sämtliche Könige, die dort regierten, besiegte und tötete er. 18Der Krieg mit ihnen dauerte jedoch lange Zeit. 19Denn keine Stadt ergab sich den Israeliten freiwillig, außer den Hiwitern von Gibeon. Alle anderen Städte mussten mit Gewalt erobert werden. 20Denn der Herr hatte es so gefügt, dass die Bewohner des Landes sich Israel unnachgiebig widersetzten. Er wollte sie dem Untergang weihen, es sollte keine Gnade für sie geben. Israel musste sie vernichten, wie der Herr es Mose befohlen hatte.
21Josua brach mit seinen Truppen auf und rottete auch die Anakiter in Hebron, Debir, Anab und allen anderen Städten aus, die sie im Bergland von Juda und Israel bewohnten. Niemand und nichts blieb dort verschont. 22Im gesamten eroberten Gebiet wurden die Anakiter vernichtet. Nur in Gaza, Gat und Aschdod blieben sie am Leben.
23Als das ganze Land in der Hand der Israeliten war, wie der Herr es Mose versprochen hatte, teilte Josua die Gebiete den Stämmen und Sippen zu. So hatte das Land nun endlich Ruhe vom Krieg.
