1Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; 2That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.10.2 royal…: Heb. cities of the kingdom 3Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. 5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
6¶ And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
7So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
8¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. 9Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night. 10And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. 11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
12¶ Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.10.12 stand…: Heb. be silent 13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.10.13 Jasher: or, the upright? 14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
15¶ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal. 16But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. 17And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. 18And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them: 19And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.10.19 smite…: Heb. cut off the tail 20And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities. 21And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. 22Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave. 23And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. 25And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. 26And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. 27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
28¶ And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho. 29Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah: 30And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.
31¶ And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: 32And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33¶ Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34¶ And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it: 35And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. 36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it: 37And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38¶ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it: 39And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
40¶ So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. 41And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. 42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. 43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
La bataille de Gabaon
1Adoni-Tsédeq, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s’était emparé d’Aï et l’avait totalement détruite pour la vouer à l’Eternel, en faisant subir à cette ville et à son roi le même sort qu’à Jéricho et à son roi. Il entendit également que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec les Israélites et qu’ils vivaient au milieu d’eux. 2Alors il fut saisi d’une grande peur, car Gabaon était une ville importante, comme les villes royales, plus grande qu’Aï, et tous ses hommes étaient des guerriers. 3C’est pourquoi Adoni-Tsédeq, roi de Jérusalem, envoya des messagers à Hoham, roi d’Hébron, à Piream, roi de Yarmouth, à Yaphia, roi de Lakish et à Debir, roi de Eglôn10.3 Toutes ces villes se situaient à quelques kilomètres les unes des autres. Elles constituaient les cinq villes les plus importantes de la région montagneuse du sud du pays., pour leur faire dire : 4Venez me prêter main-forte pour attaquer Gabaon, puisque ses habitants ont conclu la paix avec Josué et les Israélites.
5C’est ainsi que cinq rois des Amoréens, ceux de Jérusalem, d’Hébron, de Yarmouth, de Lakish et de Eglôn formèrent une coalition et marchèrent à la tête de toutes leurs armées contre Gabaon. Ils établirent leur camp devant la ville et engagèrent les hostilités.
6Les habitants de Gabaon envoyèrent des messagers à Josué au camp de Guilgal pour lui faire dire : N’abandonne pas tes serviteurs. Viens vite à notre secours, sauve-nous, car tous les rois amoréens de la région montagneuse se sont ligués contre nous10.6 L’alliance conclue avec Josué (9.11-15) impliquait l’assistance militaire de la nation suzeraine à ses vassaux si ceux-ci étaient attaqués..
7Josué vint depuis Guilgal avec toute son armée et ses plus valeureux guerriers.
8L’Eternel dit à Josué : N’aie pas peur de ces rois, car je te donne la victoire sur eux ; aucun d’eux ne pourra te résister.
9Après avoir marché toute la nuit depuis Guilgal10.9 Parcourant une trentaine de kilomètres pendant la nuit., Josué tomba sur eux à l’improviste. 10L’Eternel les mit en déroute devant Israël et leur fit essuyer une grande défaite devant Gabaon ; les Israélites les battirent en les poursuivant sur la montée de Beth-Horôn10.10 De Gabaon à Beth-Horôn vers le village de Beth-Horôn-la-Haute, le chemin monte pendant deux heures, puis il descend par un sentier abrupt et rocailleux du col de Beth-Horôn-la-Basse. C’est sur ce sentier que Josué poursuivit les fuyards pendant que les grêlons pleuvaient sur eux. et jusqu’à Azéqa et Maqqéda. 11Pendant que les Amoréens s’enfuyaient devant Israël sur la pente qui descend de Beth-Horôn, l’Eternel fit tomber sur eux du ciel d’énormes grêlons qui, jusqu’à Azéqa, firent encore plus de victimes que les épées des Israélites.
12Ce jour-là où l’Eternel donna aux Israélites la victoire sur les Amoréens, Josué s’écria devant tout Israël : Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon ! Et toi, lune, fais halte sur la vallée d’Ayalôn.
13Et le soleil s’arrêta, la lune suspendit son cours jusqu’à ce que le peuple d’Israël eût réglé ses comptes avec ses ennemis. C’est bien ce qui est écrit dans le livre du Juste10.13 Voir 2 S 1.18.. Le soleil s’immobilisa au milieu du ciel et différa son coucher pendant environ un jour entier. 14Jamais auparavant et jamais depuis lors, il n’y eut de jour comparable à celui-là, où l’Eternel a écouté la voix d’un homme. C’est qu’il combattait lui-même pour Israël. 15Après cela, Josué et toute l’armée d’Israël regagnèrent le camp de Guilgal.
La capture et l’exécution des rois vaincus
16Or, pendant la bataille, les cinq rois avaient réussi à s’enfuir et ils s’étaient cachés dans la grotte de Maqqéda. 17On les découvrit cachés dans cette grotte et on vint en informer Josué 18qui donna l’ordre suivant : Roulez de grandes pierres à l’entrée de la grotte et postez-y des hommes pour monter la garde, 19mais ne vous y attardez pas : poursuivez vos ennemis et coupez-leur la retraite ! Ne les laissez pas rentrer dans leurs villes puisque l’Eternel votre Dieu les livre en votre pouvoir !
20Josué et les Israélites leur infligèrent une cuisante défaite et achevèrent de les exterminer tous, à part quelques rescapés qui purent regagner leurs villes fortifiées. 21Puis tout le peuple revint sain et sauf auprès de Josué au camp établi à Maqqéda. Après cela, plus personne dans le pays n’osa parler contre les Israélites.
22Josué ordonna de dégager l’entrée de la grotte et d’en faire sortir les cinq rois pour les lui amener. 23On fit ainsi et on lui amena les cinq rois qui se trouvaient dans la caverne, les rois de Jérusalem, d’Hébron, de Yarmouth, de Lakish et de Eglôn. 24Pendant qu’on les faisait sortir pour les lui amener, Josué convoqua tous les hommes d’Israël et dit aux chefs des soldats qui avaient combattu avec lui : Approchez-vous et posez vos pieds sur la nuque de ces rois.
Les chefs s’avancèrent et firent ainsi. 25Josué reprit : N’ayez pas peur, ne vous laissez pas effrayer ! Prenez courage et tenez bon ! Car c’est ainsi que l’Eternel traitera tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattrez.
26Après cela, Josué les mit à mort et les fit pendre à cinq arbres. Ils y restèrent pendus jusqu’au soir. 27Au moment du coucher du soleil, il ordonna de descendre leurs corps et de les jeter dans la grotte où les rois s’étaient cachés. Ensuite, on en boucha l’entrée avec de grandes pierres qui s’y trouvent encore aujourd’hui10.27 Voir Dt 21.22-23..
La conquête de la partie sud du pays
28Le même jour, Josué s’empara de Maqqéda, il la frappa du tranchant de l’épée, il exécuta son roi et extermina tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient sans laisser aucun survivant pour les vouer à l’Eternel. Il traita le roi de Maqqéda comme il avait traité celui de Jéricho.
29De Maqqéda, Josué et tout Israël avec lui passèrent à Libna qu’ils attaquèrent. 30L’Eternel la livra aussi, elle et son roi, au pouvoir des Israélites, ils tuèrent tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient sans laisser aucun survivant. Josué traita son roi comme il avait traité celui de Jéricho.
31De Libna, Josué et tout Israël avec lui passèrent à Lakish. Ils établirent leur camp devant la ville et l’attaquèrent. 32L’Eternel la livra en leur pouvoir et ils s’en emparèrent le second jour ; ils la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée et tuèrent tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient comme ils l’avaient fait à Libna. 33Horam, le roi de Guézer, vint au secours de Lakish, mais Josué le battit, lui et son armée, sans lui laisser aucun survivant.
34De Lakish, Josué et tout Israël avec lui se dirigèrent vers Eglôn, ils établirent leur camp devant la ville et l’attaquèrent. 35Ils s’en emparèrent le même jour et la frappèrent du tranchant de l’épée, ils exécutèrent tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient pour les vouer à l’Eternel, comme ils l’avaient fait à Lakish.
36De Eglôn, Josué et tout Israël avec lui se rendirent à Hébron et l’attaquèrent10.36 Située dans la vallée et occupée par des Hittites (voir note 1.4).. 37Ils s’en emparèrent et tuèrent son roi, et tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient ainsi que dans les villes qui en dépendaient. Il n’y resta aucun survivant, comme ils l’avaient fait à Eglôn. Josué détruisit la ville et extermina tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient pour les vouer à l’Eternel. 38Après cela, Josué et tout Israël avec lui revinrent sur Debir et l’attaquèrent. 39Ils s’emparèrent de la ville, capturèrent son roi et prirent toutes les villes qui en dépendaient. Ils exterminèrent tous les êtres vivants qui s’y trouvaient pour les vouer à l’Eternel et n’y laissèrent aucun survivant, comme à Hébron. Josué traita Debir et son roi comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.
40Josué conquit tout le pays, il battit tous les rois de la région montagneuse, ceux du Néguev, de la plaine côtière et des contreforts des montagnes. Il extermina tous les êtres vivants sans épargner personne, pour les vouer à l’Eternel, comme l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, l’avait ordonné. 41Il soumit toute la région de Qadesh-Barnéa jusqu’à Gaza, et le district de Goshen10.41 Ville de la montagne (11.16 ; 15.51), à ne pas confondre avec la région égyptienne du delta du Nil (Gn 45.10). jusqu’à Gabaon. 42En une seule campagne, il vainquit tous les rois et s’empara de leurs territoires, car l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, combattait pour son peuple. 43Ensuite, Josué et tout Israël avec lui regagnèrent le camp de Guilgal.
