1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5For neither did his brethren believe in him. 6Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10¶ But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? 12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. 13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14¶ Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. 19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? 20The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? 21Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. 23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. 25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? 26But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? 27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. 28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. 29But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. 30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. 31And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
32¶ The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. 33Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. 34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? 37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
40¶ Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. 41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 42Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? 43So there was a division among the people because of him. 44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45¶ Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 49But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. 50Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. 53And every man went unto his own house.

仮庵の祭りでのイエス
1このあと、イエスはガリラヤに行き、村から村を巡回されました。ユダヤ人の指導者たちが命をつけねらっていたので、ユダヤ以外の地に身を避けようと思われたからです。 2そうこうするうち、ユダヤの年ごとの祭りである仮庵の祭り（収穫祭とも呼ばれる祭り）が近づきました。 3イエスの弟たちは、祭りのためにユダヤへ行くよう、しきりにイエスに勧めました。「もっとたくさんの人が奇跡を見てくれる所へ行ったらどうですか。 4こんな所でくすぶっていても有名にはなれないよ。兄さんがそんなに偉い人だったら、世間の人に証明してみせなくては」と、半ばあざけるように言いました。 5弟たちでさえ、イエスを信じていなかったのです。 6「今はまだ、その時ではありません。しかし、あなたたちはいつ行ってもいいのです。 7世間の人に憎まれるはずもありませんから。しかし、わたしは憎まれています。彼らの痛いところを突くからです。 8あなたたちだけで行きなさい。わたしは行く時が来たら行きますから。」 9こう言って、イエスはガリラヤに残られました。
10しかしイエスは、弟たちが出かけたあと、人目を避けてお出かけになったのです。 11ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、祭りの間にイエスを見つけ出してやろうと思い、「だれかイエスを見かけた者はいないか」と、やっきになって尋ね回りました。 12確かに、イエスのことはいろいろと話題になりました。「あの方はすばらしい方だ」とほめる者もいれば、「いや違う。とんだ詐欺師だ」と非難する者もいました。 13しかし、指導者たちの目を恐れて、表立って語る者はだれもいませんでした。
14祭りも半ばになったころ、イエスは宮へ行き、公然と教え始められました。 15それを聞いたユダヤ人の指導者たちは驚いて、「この男は一度も学校で学んだことがないのに、どうしてこんなに深い知識を持っているのだろう」と言い合いました。 16そこでイエスは言われました。「わたしの教えは、自分で考え出したことではありません。わたしをお遣わしになった神の教えなのです。 17ほんとうに神の望まれるとおりのことをしようと思う人なら、わたしの教えが神から出たものか、あるいはわたしから出たものか、はっきりわかるはずです。 18自分の意見だけをまくし立てる人は、実はわが身がほめられたい一心なのです。しかし自分をお遣わしになった方の栄誉を求める人は、正直者です。 19あなたがたは、自分ではモーセの律法を守らないのに、どうして律法を破ったと、わたしを非難するのですか。どうして命までつけねらうのですか。」 20群衆が答えました。「おい、気でも変になったんじゃないか。だれがあんたを殺そうとしているんだ。」 21-23「あなたがたは、わたしが安息日に病気の人を治したら、労働をしたと驚いています。だが、あなたがたはどうでしょうか。モーセの律法どおりに割礼（男子が生まれて八日目に、その性器の包皮を切り取るユダヤ教の儀式）を施すためには〔実際は、割礼の習慣はモーセの律法より古くからあったのですが〕、安息日でも平気で労働するではありませんか。割礼の日がちょうど安息日にあたっても、割礼を施しているではありませんか。それなら、安息日に病人を元気にしてやって、どこが悪いのでしょう。何を根拠にわたしを非難するのですか。 24よく考えてみなさい。わたしの言うことはまちがっているでしょうか。」
25エルサレムの人々の間では、互いにこんなことが言い交わされていました。「この人は、彼らが殺そうとねらっている人じゃないか。 26ところが、今ここで、おおっぴらに話をしてるっていうのに、だれも何も言わないのだ。指導者たちも、結局は正真正銘のキリスト（救い主）だと認めているのかね。 27だけど、この人がキリストのわけはないよ。どこの生まれか、身元が知れているんだから。キリストは、どこからともなく突然現れるはずだからね。」 28イエスは宮で、大声をあげて教えられました。「皆さん。確かに、わたしの生まれも育ちもはっきりしています。しかしわたしは、あなたがたの全く知らない方の代理なのです。その方は真実です。 29わたしはその方を知っています。その方といっしょにいたのですから。その方がわたしをお遣わしになったのです。」 30ユダヤ人の指導者たちは、何とかしてイエスを逮捕しようと思いました。しかし、実際に手を出す者は一人もいません。まだその時ではなかったからです。 31宮にいた人々の多くはイエスを信じ、「これだけの奇跡をなさるからには、やっぱりキリストではないだろうか」と言い合いました。
32群衆がそう考えていると知ったパリサイ人たちは、祭司長たちと手を組んで、イエスを逮捕するために役人を差し向けました。 33ところがイエスは、その人たちに言われました。「まだその時ではありません。もうしばらく、わたしはここにいます。そのあとでわたしは、わたしをお遣わしになった方のところに帰るのです。 34その時には、わたしを捜しても見つけることはできません。また、わたしのいる所に来ることもできません。」 35このことばに、ユダヤ人の指導者たちはすっかり戸惑いました。「いったいどこへ行くつもりだろう。もしかしたら、ユダヤを出て、外国のユダヤ人や、あるいは外国人に教えを伝えようとでも考えているのかもしれない。 36だが、捜しても見つけ出せないとは、どういうことだろう。『わたしのいる所に来ることができない』というのも、何のことやらまるで見当もつかない。」
37祭りの最後の一番大切な日に、イエスは大声で群衆に語りかけました。「だれでも、渇いているなら、わたしのところへ来て飲みなさい。 38わたしを信じれば、心の奥底からいのちの水の川が流れ出ると、聖書に語られているとおりです。」 39〔イエスは聖霊のことを言われたのです。聖霊は、イエスを信じる人すべてに与えられることになっていましたが、この時はまだ与えられていませんでした。イエスが天にある栄光の座に戻っておられなかったからです。〕 40イエスがこう言うのを聞いて、群衆のうちのある者は、「この人は確かに、キリストのすぐ前に来るという、あの預言者だ」と言いました。 41-42「この方こそキリストだ」と言いきる者もいました。しかし他方では、「いや、そんなはずはない。まさかガリラヤみたいな所からキリストは出ないだろう。キリストは、れっきとしたダビデ王の血筋で、ダビデ王の生地ベツレヘムの村に生まれると、聖書にはっきり書いてあるんだから」と主張する者もいました。 43このように、イエスについての意見はまちまちでした。 44中には、捕らえる機会をねらう者もいましたが、手を出すまでには至りませんでした。
45イエスの逮捕に向かった宮の役人たちは、すごすごと祭司長やパリサイ人たちのところに戻ってきました。「どうして、やつをつかまえて来なかったのか！」指導者たちは、彼らをきびしく責めました。 46役人たちは、口ごもりながら答えました。「は、はい。でも、あの人の話すことはとてもすばらしくて、これまで聞いたこともないような話なので……。」 47これを聞くと、パリサイ人たちは吐き捨てるように言いました。「さては、おまえたちも惑わされたな。 48われわれユダヤ人の議員やパリサイ人の中で、あの男をメシヤだなどと信じている者は一人もいない。 49無知な連中は頭から信じきっているかもしれないが、やつらに何がわかるか。罰あたり者めが。」 50その時、ニコデモが口を開きました。〔夜ひそかにイエスを訪ねた、あのユダヤ人の指導者です。〕 51「おことばですが、取り調べもしないうちに有罪だと決めるのは、合法的ではありません。」 52「おや、あなたも卑しいガリラヤ人なんですか。まあ、聖書を調べることですな。ガリラヤから預言者など出るはずがないことを、ご自分の目で確かめたらどうです。」
53こうして、一同は散会し、めいめい家に帰って行きました。
