1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6¶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19¶ And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. 22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? 23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. 24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? 26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. 28These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. 30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. 32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35¶ Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. 42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
43¶ The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. 44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! 48Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. 49Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. 50Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. 51And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
مسيح به دنيای ما آمد
1-2در ازل، پيش از آنكه چيزی پديد آيد، «كلمه» وجود داشت و نزد خدا بود. او همواره زنده بوده، و خود او خداست. 3هر چه هست، بوسيلهٔ او آفريده شده و چيزی نيست كه آن را نيافريده باشد. 4زندگی جاويد در اوست و اين زندگی به تمام مردم نور می‌بخشد. 5او همان نوری است كه در تاريكی می‌درخشد و تاريكی هرگز نمی‌تواند آن را خاموش كند.
6-7خدا يحيای پيامبر را فرستاد تا اين «نور» را به مردم معرفی كند و مردم به او ايمان آورند. 8يحيی آن نور نبود، او فقط شاهدی بود تا نور را به مردم معرفی كند. 9اما بعد، آن نور واقعی آمد تا به هر کس كه به اين دنيا می‌آيد، بتابد.
10گرچه جهان را او آفريده بود، اما زمانی كه به اين جهان آمد، كسی او را نشناخت. 11-12حتی در سرزمين خود و در ميان قوم خود، يهوديان، كسی او را نپذيرفت. اما او به تمام كسانی كه به او ايمان آوردند، اين حق را داد كه فرزندان خدا گردند؛ بلی، فقط كافی بود به او ايمان آورند تا نجات يابند. 13اين اشخاص تولدی نو يافتند، نه همچون تولدهای معمولی كه نتيجهٔ اميال و خواسته‌های آدمی است، بلكه اين تولد را خدا به ايشان عطا فرمود.
14«كلمهٔ خدا» انسان شد و بر روی اين زمين و در بين ما زندگی كرد. او لبريز از محبت و بخشش و راستی بود. ما بزرگی و شكوه او را به چشم خود ديديم، بزرگی و شكوه فرزند بی‌نظير پدر آسمانی ما، خدا.
15يحيی او را به مردم معرفی كرد و گفت: «اين همان كسی است كه به شما گفتم بعد از من می‌آيد و مقامش از من بالاتر است، زيرا پيش از آنكه من باشم، او وجود داشت.»
16لطف بی‌پايان او به همهٔ ما رسيد و بركت در پی بركت نصيب ما شد. 17خدا احكام خود را توسط موسی به مردم داد، اما راستی و محبت را به‌وسیلهٔ عيسی مسيح عطا فرمود. 18كسی هرگز خدا را نديده است؛ اما عيسی، فرزند يگانهٔ خدا، او را ديده است زيرا همواره همراه پدر خود، خدا می‌باشد. او هر آنچه را كه ما بايد دربارهٔ خدا بدانيم، به ما گفته است.
شهادت يحيی
19روزی سران قوم يهود از شهر اورشليم، چند تن از كاهنان و دستيارانش را نزد يحيی فرستادند تا بدانند آيا او ادعا می‌كند كه مسيح است يا نه.
20يحيی، صريحاً اظهار داشت: «نه، من مسيح نيستم.»
21پرسيدند: «خوب، پس كه هستيد؟ آيا الياس پيامبر هستيد؟»
جواب داد: «نه!»
پرسيدند: «آيا شما آن پيامبر نيستيد كه ما چشم به راهش می‌باشيم؟»
باز هم جواب داد: «نه.»
22گفتند: «پس به ما بگوييد كه هستيد تا بتوانيم برای سران قوم كه ما را به اينجا فرستاده‌اند، جوابی ببريم.»
23يحيی گفت: «چنانكه اشعيای نبی پيشگويی كرده، من صدای ندا كننده‌ای هستم كه در بيابان فرياد می‌زند: ای مردم، خود را برای آمدن خداوند آماده سازيد.»
24سپس، افرادی كه از طرف فرقهٔ فريسی‌ها آمده بودند، 25از او پرسيدند: «خوب، اگر شما نه مسيح هستيد، نه الياس و نه آن پيامبر، پس چه حق داريد مردم را غسل تعميد دهيد؟»
26يحيی گفت: «من مردم را فقط با آب غسل می‌دهم؛ ولی همين جا در ميان اين جمعيت، كسی هست كه شما او را نمی‌شناسيد. 27او بزودی خدمت خود را در بين شما آغاز می‌كند. مقام او به قدری بزرگ است كه من حتی شايسته نيستم كفشهای او را پيش پايش بگذارم.»
28اين گفتگو در «بيت‌عنيا» روی داد. بيت‌عنيا دهی است در آن طرف رود اردن و جايی است كه يحيی، مردم را غسل تعميد می‌داد.
عيسی، برّه خدا
29روز بعد، يحيی، عيسی را ديد كه به سوی او می‌آيد. پس به مردم گفت: «نگاه كنيد! اين همان برّه‌ای است كه خدا فرستاده تا برای آمرزش گناهان تمام مردم دنيا قربانی شود. 30اين همان كسی است كه گفتم بعد از من می‌آيد ولی مقامش از من بالاتر است، چون قبل از من وجود داشته است. 31من نيز او را نمی‌شناختم. ولی برای اين آمدم كه مردم را با آب غسل دهم تا به اين وسيله او را به قوم اسرائيل معرفی كنم.»
32سپس گفت: «من روح خدا را ديدم كه به شكل كبوتری از آسمان آمد و بر عيسی قرار گرفت. 33همانطور كه گفتم، من نيز او را نمی‌شناختم ولی وقتی خدا مرا فرستاد تا مردم را غسل تعميد دهم، در همان وقت به من فرمود: هرگاه ديدی روح خدا از آسمان آمد و بر كسی قرار گرفت، بدان كه او همان است كه منتظرش هستيد. اوست كه مردم را با روح‌القدس تعميد خواهد داد. 34و چون من با چشم خود اين را ديده‌ام، شهادت می‌دهم كه او فرزند خداست.»
نخستين شاگردان عيسی
35فردای آن روز، وقتی يحيی با دو نفر از شاگردان خود ايستاده بود، 36عيسی را ديد كه از آنجا می‌گذرد، يحيی با اشتياق به او نگاه كرد و گفت: «ببينيد! اين همان بره‌ای است كه خدا فرستاده است.» 37آنگاه دو شاگرد يحيی برگشتند و در پی عيسی رفتند.
38عيسی كه ديد دو نفر دنبال او می‌آيند، برگشت و از ايشان پرسيد: «چه می‌خواهيد؟»
جواب دادند: «آقا، كجا اقامت داريد؟»
39فرمود: «بياييد و ببينيد.»
پس همراه عيسی رفتند و از ساعت چهار بعد از ظهر تا غروب نزد او ماندند. 40(يكی از آن دو، «اندرياس» برادر «شمعون پطرس» بود.)
41اندرياس رفت و برادر خود را يافته، به او گفت: «شمعون، ما مسيح را پيدا كرده‌ايم!» 42و او را آورد تا عيسی را ببيند.
عيسی چند لحظه به او نگاه كرد و فرمود: «تو شمعون، پسر يونا هستی. ولی از اين پس پطرس (يعنی ”صخره“) ناميده خواهی شد!»
43روز بعد، عيسی تصميم گرفت به ايالت جليل برود. در راه، «فيليپ» را ديد و به او گفت: «همراه من بيا.» 44(فيليپ نيز اهل بيت‌صيدا و همشهری اندرياس و پطرس بود.)
45فيليپ رفت و «نتنائيل» را پيدا كرد و به او گفت: «نتنائيل، ما مسيح را يافته‌ايم، همان كسی كه موسی و پيامبران خدا درباره‌اش خبر داده‌اند. نامش عيسی است، پسر يوسف و اهل ناصره.»
46نتنائيل با تعجب پرسيد: «گفتی اهل ناصره؟ مگر ممكن است از ناصره هم چيز خوبی بيرون آيد؟»
فيليپ گفت: «خودت بيا و او را ببين.»
47وقتی نزديک می‌شدند، عيسی فرمود: «ببينيد، اين شخص كه می‌آيد، يک مرد شريف و يک اسرائيلی واقعی است.»
48نتنائيل پرسيد: «از كجا می‌دانی من كه هستم؟»
عيسی فرمود: «قبل از آنكه فيليپ تو را پيدا كند، من زير درخت انجير تو را ديدم.»
49نتنائيل حيرت‌زده گفت: «آقا، شما فرزند خدا هستيد؛ شما پادشاه اسرائيل می‌باشيد!»
50عيسی گفت: «چون فقط گفتم تو را زير درخت انجير ديدم، به من ايمان آوردی؟ بعد از اين چيزهای بزرگتر خواهی ديد. 51در حقيقت همهٔ شما آسمان را خواهيد ديد كه باز شده و فرشتگان خدا نزد من می‌آيند و به آسمان باز می‌گردند.»
