1Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days? 2Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.24.2 feed…: or, feed them 3They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a pledge. 4They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together. 5Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children. 6They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.24.6 corn: Heb. mingled corn, or, dredge24.6 they gather…: Heb. the wicked gather the vintage 7They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. 8They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. 9They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. 10They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry; 11Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. 12Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.
13They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. 14The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. 15The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.24.15 disguiseth…: Heb. setteth his face in secret 16In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light. 17For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

1なぜ、神は法廷を開いて、
私の訴えを聞いてくれないのか。
なぜ、神を愛する者が待ちぼうけをくうのか。
2ちまたには犯罪があふれている。
地境が移され、羊の群れが盗まれ、
3貧しい人や孤児のろばまで奪われているではないか。
貧しい未亡人たちは、
担保に入れたわずかの物さえ取り立てられている。
4生活に困っている者は押しのけられ、
すごすごと引き下がる。
5貧しい人は、野ろばのように、一日じゅうかけて、
やっと何とか生きていけるだけの食料にありつく。
子どもの食べる物を探しに、荒野にまで出かける。
6彼らは野生の植物を口に入れ、
悪者のぶどう畑の取り残しにさえ手を出す。
7寒くても、裸で夜を過ごす。
8山ではにわか雨に会ってずぶ濡れになり、
住む家もないので洞窟の中で生活する。
9悪者は貧しい人に金や穀物を貸す前に、
父のない子を母親の乳房から奪い取り、
その赤ん坊をまず担保として取る。
10だから貧しい人は着物もなく、裸で歩き回り、
お腹をすかせながら、他人の食糧をかついで働く。
11オリーブ油を絞りながら味見もできず、
ぶどうの実を踏みながらも、のどの渇きに苦しむ。
12町には瀕死の病人のうめきが起こり、
傷ついた者は助けを求めて叫ぶ。
しかし、神は彼らの嘆きに答えようとしない。
13悪者は光に反逆し、正義と善になじめない。
14-15彼らは人殺しだ。
夜明けとともに起き、生活に追われる者を殺す。
夜になると盗賊と姦通者に早変わりし、
『だれにも気づかれない時がきた』とほくそ笑み、
夕暮れを待ち受ける。
正体を見破られないように覆面をつけ、
16夜の闇にまぎれて家々に押し込み、昼間に眠る。
彼らは光を知らない。
17彼らにとっては暗い夜が朝なのだ。
彼らは暗黒の恐怖と手を結ぶ。
18だが、彼らはあっという間に地上から姿を消す。
その持ち物はのろわれ、子どもに財産を残せない。
19雪が日照りと暑さで跡形もなく消えるように、
罪人は死ぬと影も形もなくなる。
20生みの親さえ彼らを忘れ、
うじ虫が湧いて、彼らを食い尽くす。
二度と人の話題に上らない。
罪人は、強風を受けた木のようにへし折られる。
21頼りになる子どものいない者を食い物にし、
貧しい未亡人を助けなかったからだ。
22-23ところが、どうしたことか。
神は金持ちを保護し、他の者は死んでも、
彼らだけを長生きさせることがある。
彼らに自信と力を与え、あれやこれやと面倒を見る。
24だが、今どんなにうまくいっていても、
彼らもやはり麦の穂のように刈り取られ、
帰らぬ人となる。
25だれが、そうでないと言えよう。
だれが、私はうそつきだと証明し、
私の言うことは間違いだと
言い張ることができるだろうか。」
