1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. 2And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 3And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.2.3 to destroy…: Heb. to swallow him up 4And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. 5But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. 6And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.2.6 but: or, only
7¶ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. 8And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
9¶ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. 10But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
11¶ Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. 12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. 13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Al doilea necaz al lui Iov
1Într‑o altă zi, fiii lui Dumnezeu au venit pentru a se înfățișa înaintea Domnului. Satan a venit și el în mijlocul lor pentru a se înfățișa înaintea Domnului.
2Domnul l‑a întrebat pe Satan:
– De unde vii?
Satan I‑a răspuns, zicând:
– De la cutreierarea pământului și de la plimbarea ce am făcut‑o pe el.
3Domnul l‑a întrebat pe Satan:
– L‑ai văzut pe robul Meu Iov? Nu mai este nimeni ca el pe pământ, un om integru și drept, care se teme de Dumnezeu și se ferește de rău. Chiar și acum, el rămâne neclintit în integritatea lui, deși M‑ai stârnit împotriva lui ca să‑l distrug fără motiv.
4Atunci Satan I‑a răspuns Domnului, zicând:
– Piele pentru piele4 Posibil un proverb, folosit în contextul trocului, al schimbului de piei de animale; probabil Satan se referă aici la faptul că, atât timp cât Dumnezeu nu S‑a atins de Iov însuși, atitudinea acestuia nu este deloc lăudabilă, poate este chiar o încercare egoistă de a se proteja pe sine.! Omul dă tot ce are pentru viața sa. 5Dar ia întinde‑Ți mâna și atinge‑Te de oasele lui și de carnea lui, și vei vedea dacă nu Te va blestema în față!
6Domnul i‑a zis lui Satan:
– Iată, ți‑l dau pe mână, numai cruță‑i viața!
7Satan a ieșit din prezența Domnului și l‑a lovit pe Iov cu bube dureroase din talpa piciorului până‑n creștetul capului. 8Iov a luat un ciob de lut cu care să se scarpine și s‑a așezat în cenușă.
9Atunci soția lui i‑a zis:
– Încă rămâi neclintit în integritatea ta? Blestemă‑L pe Dumnezeu și mori!
10El i‑a răspuns:
– Vorbești ca o femeie nebună. Ce?! Să primim de la Dumnezeu doar binele și să nu primim și răul?
În toate acestea Iov nu a păcătuit deloc cu buzele sale.
Cei trei prieteni ai lui Iov
11Trei prieteni de‑ai lui Iov, Elifaz temanitul, Bildad șuhitul și Țofar naamatitul, au auzit de nenorocirea care s‑a abătut asupra lui și s‑au înțeles să meargă împreună la el, ca să‑l compătimească și să‑l mângâie. 12Ridicându‑și ochii de departe, nu l‑au mai recunoscut. Ei și‑au ridicat glasul și au plâns. Fiecare și‑a sfâșiat mantia și au aruncat cu țărână spre cer, deasupra capetelor lor. 13Și au șezut lângă el pe pământ timp de șapte zile și șapte nopți. Ei nu i‑au spus niciun cuvânt, căci vedeau că durerea îi era foarte mare.
