1The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon.40.1 chains: or, manicles 2And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place. 3Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. 4And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.40.4 were…: or, are upon thine hand40.4 I will…: Heb. I will set mine eye upon thee 5Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go. 6Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.
7¶ Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon; 8Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 9And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. 10As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.40.10 to serve: Heb. to stand before 11Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan; 12Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.
13¶ Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 14And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.40.14 to slay…: Heb. to strike thee in soul? 15Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? 16But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Todo esto les ha pasado porque pecaron contra el Señor y desobedecieron su voz. 4No obstante, hoy te libero de las cadenas que te sujetan las manos. Si quieres venir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, que yo te cuidaré. Pero si no quieres, no lo hagas. Mira, tienes ante tus ojos toda la tierra: ve adonde más te convenga».
5Como Jeremías no se decidía, Nabuzaradán añadió: «Vuelve junto a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán y nieto de Safán, a quien el rey de Babilonia ha nombrado gobernador de las ciudades de Judá; vive con él y con tu pueblo o ve adonde más te convenga».
Luego el comandante de la guardia le dio provisiones, un regalo y lo dejó en libertad. 6Jeremías se fue entonces junto a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán, en Mizpa, y se quedó con él en medio del pueblo que había permanecido en la tierra.
Asesinato de Guedalías
40:7-9; 41:1-3 – 2R 25:22-26
7Cuando todos los oficiales y soldados del ejército que estaban en el campo se enteraron de que el rey de Babilonia había puesto a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán, como gobernador del país, y de que le había confiado el cuidado de hombres, mujeres y niños, así como de los más pobres del país que no habían sido deportados a Babilonia, 8fueron a Mizpa para presentarse ante Guedalías. Entre ellos estaban: Ismael, hijo de Netanías, Johanán y Jonatán, hijos de Carea, Seraías, hijo de Tanjumet, los hijos de Efay oriundo de Netofa, y Jazanías, hijo de un hombre de Macá, y sus hombres. 9Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán y nieto de Safán, hizo este juramento a ellos y a sus tropas: «No teman servir a los babilonios.40:9 Lit. caldeos. Si ustedes se quedan en el país y sirven al rey de Babilonia, les aseguro que les irá bien. 10Yo me quedaré en Mizpa, para representarlos ante los babilonios que vengan a vernos. Pero ustedes, comiencen a almacenar en recipientes vino, frutos de verano y aceite, y vivan en las ciudades que han ocupado».
11Todos los judíos que estaban en Moab, Amón y Edom, y en todos los otros países, se enteraron también de que el rey de Babilonia había dejado un remanente en Judá, y que había nombrado como gobernador a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán y nieto de Safán. 12Entonces todos estos judíos regresaron a la tierra de Judá, de todos los países donde estaban dispersos. Al llegar, se presentaron en Mizpa ante Guedalías. También almacenaron vino y frutos de verano en abundancia.
13Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los demás oficiales del ejército que estaban en el campo, se presentaron ante Guedalías en Mizpa 14y dijeron:
—¿No sabes que Balís, rey de Amón, ha mandado a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, para matarte?
Pero Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán, no les creyó. 15Y allí en Mizpa, Johanán, hijo de Carea, propuso en secreto a Guedalías:
—Déjame ir a matar a Ismael, hijo de Netanías. ¡Nadie tiene que enterarse! ¿Por qué vamos a permitir que te asesine? Eso causaría la dispersión de todos los judíos que se han reunido a tu alrededor y acabaría con el remanente de Judá.
16Pero Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán, respondió a Johanán, hijo de Carea:
—¡Ni lo pienses! ¡Lo que dices acerca de Ismael es mentira!
