1The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying, 2Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.
3¶ Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah: 4Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city. 5And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. 6And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence. 7And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.
8¶ And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. 9He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey. 10For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
11¶ And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, Hear ye the word of the LORD; 12O house of David, thus saith the LORD; Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.21.12 Execute: Heb. Dios rechaza el pedido de Sedequías
1Esta es la palabra del Señor, que vino a Jeremías cuando el rey Sedequías envió a Pasur hijo de Malquías, y al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maseías, a que le dijeran:
2«Consulta ahora al Señor por nosotros, porque Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, nos está atacando. Tal vez el Señor haga uno de sus milagros, y lo obligue a retirarse».
3Jeremías les respondió:
«Advertidle a Sedequías 4que así dice el Señor, el Dios de Israel: “Yo haré retroceder tus tropas, las que pelean contra el rey de Babilonia y contra los caldeos, que desde fuera de los muros os tienen sitiados. Haré que tus tropas se replieguen dentro de la ciudad. 5Yo mismo pelearé contra vosotros. Con gran despliegue de poder, y con ira, furor y gran indignación, 6heriré a hombres y animales, y los habitantes de esta ciudad morirán por causa de una peste terrible. 7Después de eso entregaré a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y a sus oficiales y a la gente que haya quedado con vida después de la peste, la espada y el hambre —afirma el Señor—. Los entregaré en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y de los enemigos que buscan matarlos. Sin ninguna piedad, clemencia ni compasión, Nabucodonosor los herirá a filo de espada”.
8»Y a este pueblo adviértele que así dice el Señor: “Pongo delante de vosotros el camino de la vida y el camino de la muerte. 9El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá por la espada y la peste, o de hambre. Pero el que salga y se rinda a los caldeos que os están sitiando vivirá. Así salvará su vida. 10Porque he decidido hacerle a esta ciudad el mal y no el bien —afirma el Señor—. Será entregada en manos del rey de Babilonia, quien le prenderá fuego”.
11»Di también a la casa real de Judá que escuchen la palabra del Señor. 12Adviértele a la dinastía de David que así dice el Señor:
»“Haced justicia cada mañana,
y librad al explotado del poder del opresor,
no sea que mi ira se encienda como un fuego
y arda sin que nadie pueda extinguirla,
a causa de la maldad de sus acciones.
13¡Yo estoy contra ti, Jerusalén,
reina del valle, roca de la llanura!
—afirma el Señor—.
Vosotros decís: ‘¿Quién podrá venir contra nosotros?
¿Quién podrá entrar en nuestros refugios?’
14Yo os castigaré conforme al fruto de vuestras acciones
—afirma el Señor—;
a su bosque le prenderé fuego,
y ese fuego consumirá todos sus alrededores”».
