1The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.14.1 the dearth: Heb. the words of the dearths, or, restraints 2Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. 3And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. 4Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads. 5Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. 6And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
7¶ O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee. 8O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night? 9Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.14.9 we…: Heb. thy name is called upon us
10¶ Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins. 11Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good. 12When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
13¶ Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.14.13 assured…: Heb. peace of truth 14Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. 15Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. 16And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
17¶ Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow. 18If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.14.18 go about…: or, make merchandise against a land, and men acknowledge it not 19Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble! 20We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee. 21Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us. 22Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

1Cuvântul Domnului spus lui Ieremia cu prilejul secetei:
2„Iuda bocește,
iar porțile îi sunt slăbite.
Ele sunt posomorâte din cauza țării.
Strigătul Ierusalimului se înalță.
3Cei măreți ai lor îi trimit după apă pe cei neînsemnați.3 Sau: Nobilii lui îi trimit pe servitorii lor.
Ei se duc la fântâni,
dar nu găsesc apă.
Se întorc cu vasele goale.
Rușinați și dezamăgiți
își acoperă capul.
4Din cauza pământului este spaimă,
pentru că nu este ploaie în țară.
Plugarii sunt dezamăgiți
și își acoperă capul.
5Chiar și cerboaica de pe câmp
naște și își părăsește puii,
pentru că nu găsește iarbă.
6Măgarii sălbatici stau pe înălțimi pleșuve
și gâfâie ca șacalii.
Li se topesc ochii
căci nu este iarbă.“
7Chiar dacă nelegiuirile noastre mărturisesc împotriva noastră,
lucrează, Doamne, pentru Numele Tău!
Căci necredincioșiile noastre sunt multe;
am păcătuit împotriva Ta.
8O, Speranță a lui Israel,
Salvatorul lui în vreme de necaz,
de ce ești ca un străin în țară
și ca un trecător care se oprește să înnopteze?
9De ce ești ca un om înmărmurit,
ca un viteaz care nu poate izbăvi?
Tu ești în mijlocul nostru, Doamne,
și Numele Tău este chemat peste noi!
Nu ne părăsi!
10Iată ce spune Domnul despre poporul acesta:
„Pentru că le place să hoinărească
și nu își țin în frâu picioarele,
Domnul nu‑Și găsește plăcerea în ei;
acum El Își aduce aminte de nelegiuirea lor
și îi pedepsește pentru păcatele lor.“
11Domnul mi‑a zis:
– Nu mijloci pentru binele acestui popor, 12căci, chiar dacă vor posti, tot nu le voi asculta strigătul. Chiar dacă vor aduce arderi‑de‑tot și daruri de mâncare, nu le voi primi. În schimb, îi voi mistui prin sabie, prin foamete și prin molimă.
13Eu am răspuns:
– Ah, Stăpâne Doamne! Iată, profeții lor le zic: „Nu veți vedea sabie și nu veți avea parte de foamete, ci Domnul vă va da în locul acesta o pace trainică.“
14Dar Domnul mi‑a zis:
– Profeții lor profețesc minciuni în Numele Meu. Nu Eu i‑am trimis, nu Eu i‑am împuternicit și nu Eu le‑am vorbit. Ei vă profețesc viziuni mincinoase, divinații14 Vezi nota de la Deut. 8:10., lucruri de nimic14 Sau: ghiciri de nimic. și înșelăciunea inimii lor. 15De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul despre profeții care profețesc în Numele Meu: „Nu Eu i‑am trimis să vă spună că sabia și foametea nu vor fi în țara aceasta. Profeții aceștia vor pieri uciși de sabie și de foamete, 16iar oamenii cărora ei le profețesc vor fi scoși afară și întinși pe străzile Ierusalimului din cauza foametei și a sabiei. Nu va fi nimeni să‑i înmormânteze, nici pe ei, nici pe soțiile lor, nici pe fiii lor, nici pe fiicele lor. Voi turna astfel răutatea lor asupra capetelor lor.
17Spune‑le cuvântul acesta:
«Ochii mei să verse lacrimi zi și noapte
și să nu se oprească,
căci fecioara – fiica poporului meu –
a suferit o rană cumplită,
o lovitură dureroasă.
18Dacă ies pe câmp,
iată‑i pe cei străpunși de sabie.
Dacă intru în cetate,
iată‑i pe cei bolnavi de foamete.
Chiar și profetul și preotul cutreieră țara
fără să știe încotro merg18 Sau: fără a avea cunoaștere; sau: preotul / merg într‑o țară pe care nu o cunosc..»“
19– Ai lepădat Tu de tot pe Iuda
și a detestat sufletul Tău atât de mult Sionul?
De ce ne‑ai lovit în așa fel
încât nu mai avem vindecare?
Noi așteptam pacea,
dar n‑a venit nimic bun;
așteptam un timp de vindecare,
dar iată că vine numai teroare!
20Doamne, recunoaștem atât răutatea noastră,
cât și nelegiuirea părinților noștri,
căci am păcătuit împotriva Ta.
21Pentru Numele Tău, nu disprețui
și nu necinsti tronul slavei Tale!
Amintește‑Ți de legământul pe care l‑ai făcut cu noi
și nu‑l rupe!
22Este oare printre idolii deșerți ai neamurilor vreunul care să aducă ploaie?
Sau poate cerul să dea averse?
Nu, ci Tu dai ploaie, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru!
De aceea, noi nădăjduim în Tine,
căci Tu ești Cel Ce faci toate aceste lucruri.
