Gods opdracht aan Jesaja
1In het jaar dat koning Uzzia stierf, zag ik de Here! Hij zat op een hoge troon en de tempel was gevuld met zijn glorie. 2Boven Hem zweefden machtige serafs met zes vleugels. Met twee vleugels bedekten zij hun gezichten, met twee andere bedekten zij hun voeten en met de andere twee vlogen zij. 3In een groot koor riepen zij elkaar toe: ‘Heilig, heilig, heilig is de Here van de hemelse legers, de hele aarde is met zijn glorie gevuld.’ 4Een machtig koor was het! De tempel trilde op zijn grondvesten en het heiligdom vulde zich met rook.
5Toen zei ik: ‘Ik ben ten dode opgeschreven, ik moet zwijgen want ik heb onreine lippen. En nu heb ik de Koning gezien, de Here van de hemelse legers.’ 6Toen vloog een van de serafs naar het altaar en pakte er met een tang een gloeiende kool uit. 7Hij raakte met de gloeiende kool mijn lippen aan en zei: ‘Nu deze kool uw lippen heeft aangeraakt, is uw ongerechtigheid verdwenen. Al uw zonden zijn u vergeven.’
8Toen hoorde ik de Here vragen: ‘Wie zal Ik als boodschapper naar mijn volk sturen? Wie zal namens Ons gaan?’ En ik zei: ‘Here, stuurt U mij! Ik zal gaan!’
9En Hij zei: ‘Ja, ga maar. Zeg dit tegen mijn volk: “Hoewel u mijn woorden herhaaldelijk hoort, zult u ze niet begrijpen. Ook al kijkt u oplettend toe als Ik mijn werk volbreng, dan nog zult u niet weten wat het te betekenen heeft.” 10Maak hun hart onverschillig, stop hun oren dicht en sluit hun ogen. Ik wil niet dat zij zien, horen of begrijpen, dan kunnen zij niet naar Mij terugkeren en genezen worden.’
11Toen zei ik: ‘Hoelang moet dat duren, Here?’ En Hij antwoordde: ‘Net zolang tot hun steden zijn verwoest en er niemand meer woont. Tot hun land een woestenij is geworden 12en zij allemaal als slaven naar verre landen zijn weggevoerd en het hele land Israël uitgestorven is! 13Zelfs al blijft slechts een tiende deel over, een schamel restant, dan zal ook dat worden aangevallen en verwoest. Toch zal het zijn als een omgehakte boom waarvan de stronk blijft staan en voor nieuw leven zorgt.’
