1Wee u, land aan de bovenstroom van de Nijl dat gonst van de insecten! 2Land dat ambassadeurs in snelle boten langs de Nijl stuurt! Laat uw snelle gezanten naar u terugkeren. Naar een groot en soepel volk dat overal wordt gevreesd. Een veroverend en vernietigend volk, van wie het land verdeeld is door rivieren. Dit is de boodschap die u wordt gestuurd: 3als de oorlogsvlag gehesen wordt op de berg, laat dan de hele wereld goed opletten! Als er op de trompet geblazen wordt, luister dan goed! 4Want de Here heeft mij het volgende verteld: ‘Vanuit mijn woonplaats kijk Ik onbewogen toe, roerloos als de verzengende hitte op het middaguur of als nevel in de hitte van de oogsttijd. 5Maar voordat zij de aanval hebben ingezet en terwijl hun plannen als druiven rijpen, zal Ik u afsnijden, zoals een snoeimes wilde scheuten afsnijdt. 6Hun machtige leger zal dood op het slagveld achterblijven als een prooi voor de roofvogels en de wilde dieren. De gieren zullen de hele zomer lichamen uit elkaar scheuren en de wilde dieren zullen de hele winter op botten knagen.’
7Maar er zal een tijd komen waarin dat sterke en machtige land dat wijd en zijd wordt gevreesd, dat veroverende en vernietigende volk van wie het land verdeeld is door rivieren, geschenken zal brengen naar de tempel van de Here van de hemelse legers in Jeruzalem, op de berg Sion.
