1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. 14Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; 16Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. 18For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: 20(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 21And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:) 22But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 23To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. 25See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: 26Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 27And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: 29For our God is a consuming fire.
Dumnezeu Își disciplinează fiii

Scriptura ne îndeamnă să cugetăm adânc la felul în care El a suferit și, prin analogie, să ne gândim la suferințele noastre. În felul acesta vom căpăta mai multă încurajare să luptăm cu ispitirile. la Cel Ce a îndurat o astfel de împotrivire față de El Însuși din partea păcătoșilor, ca să nu vă descurajați în sufletele voastre și să obosiți.
4Voi nu v‑ați împotrivit încă până la sânge în lupta împotriva păcatului 5și ați uitat îndemnul pe care vi‑l dă ca unor fii:
„Fiul meu, nu disprețui disciplinarea Domnului,
nici nu obosi când ești mustrat de El,
6căci Domnul îl disciplinează pe cel pe care‑l iubește
și‑l lovește cu nuiaua pe orice fiu pe care‑l primește.“6 Autorul citează din Prov. 3:11-12 în versiunea LXX. Vezi nota de la Prov. 3:12.
7Îndurați7 Verbul poate fi tradus atât ca un imperativ, cât și ca un indicativ prezent. având în vedere disciplinarea! Dumnezeu Se poartă cu voi ca și cu niște fii. Căci care este fiul pe care nu‑l disciplinează tatăl? 8Însă dacă sunteți scutiți de disciplinare,8 Lit.: Însă dacă sunteți fără disciplinare. la care toți au devenit părtași, atunci sunteți copii nelegitimi, iar nu fii! 9Mai mult, am avut părinți trupești care ne disciplinau și pe care îi respectam. Cu cât mai mult deci trebuie să ne supunem Tatălui duhurilor și să trăim!? 10Căci ei, într-adevăr, ne disciplinau pentru puține zile, așa cum li se părea lor că este bine, însă El o face spre folosul nostru, ca să avem parte de sfințenia Lui. 11Orice disciplinare nu pare în prezent o bucurie, ci mai degrabă o întristare, dar mai târziu produce rodul pașnic al dreptății, pentru cei ce au fost încercați prin ea.
12De aceea, întăriți‑vă brațele obosite și genunchii slăbiți! 13„Faceți cărări drepte pentru picioarele voastre“13 Autorul citează din Prov. 4:26 în versiunea LXX., pentru ca șchiopul să nu‑și scrântească piciorul, ci mai degrabă să fie vindecat!
14Urmăriți cu toții pacea și sfințirea, fără de care nimeni nu‑L va vedea pe Domnul. 15Îngrijiți‑vă ca nu cumva vreunul să ducă lipsă de harul lui Dumnezeu, ca nu cumva să crească vreo rădăcină de amărăciune, care să provoace durere, iar prin ea mulți să fie pângăriți,15 Vezi și Deut. 29:18. 16ca nu cumva vreunul să fie curvar sau lumesc ca Esau, care, pentru o mâncare, și‑a vândut drepturile de întâi născut. 17Voi știți că, mai târziu, când a dorit să moștenească binecuvântarea, a fost respins, căci n‑a mai găsit loc de pocăință, chiar dacă a căutat‑o cu lacrimi.
18Căci nu v‑ați apropiat de ceea ce poate fi atins, de ceea ce este cuprins de foc, de întuneric, negură și furtună, 19nici de sunet de trâmbiță sau de un glas ale cărui cuvinte i‑au făcut pe cei ce l‑au auzit să ceară să nu li se mai vorbească, – 20pentru că n‑au putut îndura ce s‑a poruncit: „Chiar dacă un animal atinge muntele, să fie omorât cu pietre!“20 Vezi Ex. 19:12-13.; 21priveliștea aceea era atât de înspăimântătoare, încât Moise a spus: „Sunt înspăimântat21 Vezi Deut. 9:19. și tremur!“ – 22ci v‑ați apropiat de muntele Sion, de cetatea Dumnezeului cel Viu, Ierusalimul ceresc, de miile de îngeri adunați pentru sărbătoare, 23de Biserica întâilor născuți scriși în ceruri, de Dumnezeu, Judecătorul tuturor, de duhurile desăvârșite ale celor drepți, 24de Isus, Mijlocitorul Noului Legământ, și de sângele stropit, care vorbește mai bine decât sângele lui Abel.
25Vedeți să nu‑L respingeți pe Cel Ce vă vorbește! Căci dacă n‑au scăpat aceia care L‑au respins pe Cel Ce i‑a avertizat pe pământ, cu atât mai mult nici noi nu vom scăpa, dacă ne întoarcem de la Cel Ce ne avertizează din ceruri, 26al Cărui glas a clătinat atunci pământul, dar Care acum a promis, zicând: „Voi clătina încă o dată nu numai pământul, ci și cerul.“26 Vezi Hag. 2:6. 27Cuvintele „încă o dată“ arată înlăturarea lucrurilor clătinate, adică a lucrurilor create27 Lit.: făcute., astfel încât să rămână lucrurile ce nu pot fi clătinate.
28De aceea, întrucât primim o Împărăție care nu poate fi clătinată, să avem în inimile noastre o mulțumire prin care să ne închinăm lui Dumnezeu într‑un mod plăcut, cu evlavie și reverență, 29pentru că „Dumnezeul nostru este un foc mistuitor“29 Vezi Deut. 4:24..
