15¶ Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! 16Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.2.16 with…: or, more with shame than with glory 17For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

1Jetzt will ich meinen Platz auf dem Turm an der Stadtmauer einnehmen. Dort halte ich wie ein Wachposten Ausschau und warte gespannt darauf, was der Herr mir auf meine Klage antworten wird.
Der Hochmütige wird zugrunde gehen!
2Der Herr sprach zu mir: »Was ich dir in dieser Vision sage, das schreibe in deutlicher Schrift auf Tafeln nieder! Jeder, der vorübergeht, soll es lesen können. 3Denn was ich dir jetzt offenbare, wird nicht sofort eintreffen, sondern erst zur festgesetzten Zeit. Aber es wird sich ganz bestimmt erfüllen, darauf kannst du dich verlassen. Warte geduldig, selbst wenn es noch eine Weile dauert! Dies ist, was du schreiben sollst:
4Nur der wird leben, der Gottes Willen tut und ihm vertraut.2,4 Wörtlich: Der Gerechte wird durch seinen Glauben leben. Wer aber hochmütig und unaufrichtig ist, verfehlt sein Ziel. 5Wer sich auf seine Reichtümer verlässt, betrügt sich selbst.2,5 So nach einigen alten Handschriften. Der hebräische Text lautet: Der Wein ist trügerisch. Der Hochmütige wird zugrunde gehen, auch wenn er sein Maul so weit aufreißt wie das Totenreich und so unersättlich ist wie der Tod, ja, selbst wenn er jetzt noch ein Volk nach dem anderen verschlingt.«
Drohworte gegen einen mächtigen Herrscher
6Eines Tages werden die eroberten Völker ein Spottlied über ihren Feind anstimmen. Mit ihren Anspielungen werden sie sich über ihn lustig machen und rufen:
»Wehe dir! Denn du hast fremden Besitz an dich gerissen. Wie lange soll das noch so weitergehen? Du bereicherst dich, indem du Pfand von anderen forderst. 7Doch mit einem Mal werden sie alles mit Zinsen von dir zurückfordern. Du wirst vor ihnen zittern – so wird der Räuber selbst zur Beute! 8Wie du ganze Völker ausgeraubt hast, so rauben sie dich dann aus. Sie zahlen dir heim, dass du so viele Menschen umgebracht und all ihre Städte und Länder verwüstet hast.
9Wehe dir! Denn ständig willst du deinen Besitz vergrößern, und dabei ist dir jedes Mittel recht. Du tust alles, um dich sicher zu fühlen, über jede Gefahr erhaben wie ein Adler hoch oben in seinem Nest. Doch letzten Endes stürzt du dich und deine Familie damit nur ins Unglück. 10Du hast beschlossen, viele Völker auszurotten, aber damit hast du dein Leben verwirkt! Es wird deinem Königshaus nichts als Schande einbringen! 11Sogar die Steine in der Mauer schreien deine Untaten heraus, und die Sparren im Gebälk stimmen mit ein.
12Wehe dir! Denn als du deine Stadt bautest, hast du viel Blut vergossen; deine Festung ist auf Unrecht gegründet. 13Aber der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, hat das letzte Wort: Was Völker mühsam errichtet haben, hat keinen Bestand – ihre Bauwerke werden ein Raub der Flammen!
14Wie das Wasser die Meere füllt, so wird die Erde einmal erfüllt sein von der Erkenntnis der Herrlichkeit des Herrn.
15Wehe dir! Denn du hast deinen Nachbarvölkern einen Becher mit Gift2,15 Oder: (einen Becher) voll Zorn. eingeschenkt. Sie taumelten wie Betrunkene, und du hast ihre Schande genossen. 16Bald aber wirst du selbst vor Scham vergehen; dann ist es vorbei mit all deiner Herrlichkeit. Die starke Hand des Herrn wird dir den Becher reichen, der mit seinem Zorn gefüllt ist. Du musst ihn austrinken und wirst selbst entblößt2,16 Oder nach einigen alten Handschriften und Übersetzungen: stürzen.. So wird auch deine Ehre in den Schmutz gezogen.
17Du hast den Libanon abgeholzt und sein Wild ausgerottet. Das kommt dich teuer zu stehen! Du hast Menschen umgebracht und all ihre Städte und Länder verwüstet; dafür wirst du büßen müssen.
18Kann eine Götterfigur, die ein Mensch geschnitzt oder gegossen hat, ihm etwa helfen? Sie ist ein glatter Betrug! Wie kann jemand einem stummen Götzen vertrauen, den er selbst gemacht hat?
19Wehe dir! Denn du sagst zu einem Stück Holz: ›Wach auf!‹, und zu einem toten Stein: ›Werde lebendig!‹. Kann denn ein solcher Götze einen guten Rat erteilen? Er ist mit Gold und Silber überzogen, aber er hat kein Leben in sich! 20Der Herr dagegen wohnt in seinem heiligen Tempel. Seid still vor ihm, ihr Menschen auf der ganzen Welt!«
