1The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. 2O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! 3Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. 4Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.1.4 wrong: or, wrested

12¶ Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. 1Rostirea pe care a văzut‑o profetul Habacuc.
Prima plângere a profetului
2– Până când, Doamne, voi striga după ajutor,
și Tu nu vei asculta?
Până când voi striga către Tine: „Violență!“,
și Tu nu vei izbăvi?
3De ce mă faci să privesc nelegiuirea
și Te uiți la necaz?
Distrugerea și violența sunt înaintea mea;
peste tot sunt dezbinări și se stârnesc certuri.
4De aceea Legea este fără putere
și dreptatea nu se arată niciodată.
Căci cel rău îl împresoară4 Sau: îl învinge. pe cel drept
și astfel dreptatea este pervertită.
Răspunsul Domnului
5– Uitați‑vă printre neamuri și priviți!
Mirați‑vă! Uimiți‑vă!
Căci în zilele voastre fac o lucrare
pe care n‑ați crede‑o
dacă v‑ar povesti‑o cineva!
6Iată, îi voi ridica pe caldeeni6 babilonieni.,
acel neam crud și năvalnic,
care străbate întinderile pământului
pentru a lua în stăpânire locuințe
care nu sunt ale lui!
7Ei sunt îngrozitori și de temut;
își au propria lege
și nu recunosc nicio altă autoritate!7 Lit.: înfricoșători; / judecata și demnitatea lor provin numai de la ei înșiși.
8Caii lor sunt mai rapizi decât leoparzii
și mai sprinteni decât lupii în amurg.
Călăreții lor se avântă,
călăreții lor vin de departe.
Zboară ca un vultur care se repede să devoreze;
9toți vin pentru violență.
Privirile lor sunt ațintite9 Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur. tot înainte
și adună captivi ca nisipul de mulți.
10Își bat joc de regi
și‑i iau în derâdere pe conducători.
Râd de orice fortificație,
căci îngrămădesc pământ10 Sau: fac o rampă din pământ, tehnică militară, folosită de către asediatori. lângă ea și o cuceresc.
11Apoi trec ca vântul și merg mai departe11 Posibil: și depășesc limita.;
el se face astfel vinovat,
puterea lui fiindu‑i dumnezeul.
A doua plângere a profetului
12– Oare nu ești Tu din veșnicie, Doamne?
Dumnezeul meu, Sfântul meu, nu vom muri!
Doamne, Tu l‑ai rânduit pentru a face judecată!
Stânca mea, Tu l‑ai ridicat
ca să pedepsească!
13Ochii Tăi sunt prea curați ca să se uite la rău;
Tu nu poți să privești asuprirea!
De ce Te uiți la cei necredincioși
și taci când cel rău îl înghite
pe cel mai drept decât el?
14L‑ai făcut pe om asemenea peștilor mării,
asemenea vietății din mare care nu are stăpân.
15El îi scoate pe toți cu undița,
îi adună cu mreaja lui,
îi strânge în năvodul lui
și de aceea se bucură și se veselește.
16De aceea aduce el jertfe mrejei sale
și arde tămâie năvodului său!
Datorită lor, partea lui este bogată
și mâncarea lui este din abundență!
17Va continua el oare să‑și golească mreaja
și să ucidă neamuri fără să cruțe nimic?
