1And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.44.1 the steward…: Heb. him that was over his house 2And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.44.5 divineth: or, maketh trial?
6¶ And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words. 7And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing: 8Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold? 9With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen. 10And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless. 11Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. 12And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
14¶ And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground. 15And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?44.15 divine: or, make trial? 16And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found. 17And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
18¶ Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh. 19My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother? 20And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him. 21And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him. 22And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die. 23And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more. 24And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food. 26And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons: 28And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: 29And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life; 31It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. 33Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.44.34 come…: Heb. find my father
자루 속에 든 은잔
1요셉은 자기 집안 일을 맡은 하인에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “너는 각 사람의 자루에 가져갈 수 있을 만큼 양식을 채우고 각자의 돈도 그 자루에 넣어라.
2그리고 제일 막내 동생의 자루에는 내 은잔을 넣고 그의 곡식 값도 함께 넣어 주어라.” 그래서 그는 요셉이 시키는 대로 하고
3아침 일찍 나귀를 태워 그들을 보냈다.
4그들이 성에서 나가 얼마 가지 않았을 때에 요셉이 자기 하인에게 말하였다. “그 사람들을 급히 뒤쫓아가서 그들에게 ‘어째서 너희가 선을 악으로 갚느냐?
5너희가 무엇 때문에 내 주인이 가지고 술을 마시며 점치는 데 사용하는 은잔을 훔쳐 갔느냐? 너희는 정말 악한 짓을 하였다’ 고 말하라.”
6그 하인이 그들을 뒤쫓아가서 그대로 말하자
7그들이 이렇게 대답하였다. “어째서 이런 말씀을 하십니까? 우리는 절대로 그런 짓을 하지 않았습니다.
8우리 자루에 들어 있던 돈도 우리가 가나안 땅에서 당신에게 가져갔는데 무엇 때문에 우리가 당신 주인의 집에서 은금을 도둑질하겠습니까?
9우리 중에 누구든지 그것을 가진 자가 발견되면 그를 죽이십시오. 그리고 나머지는 당신의 종이 되겠습니다.”
10그때 그는 “좋소. 그렇다면 당신들의 말대로 하겠소. 누가 그 은잔을 훔쳤든지 그 사람만 내 종이 될 것이며 나머지는 아무 죄가 없을 것이오” 하였다.
11그래서 그들이 각자 자루를 급히 땅에 내려 그것을 풀어 놓자
12그 하인이 장남부터 시작하여 막내 동생에게 이르기까지 나이 순으로 샅샅이 뒤졌는데 그 잔이 베냐민의 자루에서 발견되었다.
13이것을 본 형제들은 옷을 찢고 슬퍼하며 각자 짐을 나귀에 싣고 성으로 되돌아왔다.
14유다와 그의 형제들이 요셉의 집에 이르렀을 때 요셉은 집에 그대로 있었다. 그들이 땅에 엎드려 그 앞에 절하자
15요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. “너희가 어째서 이런 짓을 하였느냐? 나 같은 사람은 점으로 범인을 찾아낼 수 있다는 것을 몰랐느냐?”
16이때 유다가 대답하였다. “우리가 44:16 히 ‘내 주께’총리께 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까? 우리가 무슨 변명을 하며 어떻게 우리의 무죄를 입증할 수 있겠습니까? 하나님이 우리 죄를 드러내셨으니 이제 우리와 이 잔이 발견된 자가 다 당신의 종이 되겠습니다.”
17그러자 요셉이 “내가 그렇게 하지 않겠다. 잔을 훔쳐 간 자만 내 종이 될 것이며 너희는 너희 아버지에게 평안히 돌아가거라” 하자
18유다가 그에게 가까이 가서 말하였다. “총리께 한 말씀만 드리겠습니다. 제발 저에게 노하지 마십시오. 총리께서는 왕과 다름이 없습니다.
19전에 총리께서 우리에게 ‘너희는 아버지나 다른 형제가 있느냐?’ 하고 물으셨습니다.
20그래서 우리가 ‘우리에게는 나이 많은 아버지가 계시고 또 아버지가 노년에 낳은 어린 동생이 있는데 그의 형은 죽었고 그의 어머니가 낳은 아들 중에서 그만 남았으므로 아버지가 그를 무척 사랑합니다’ 하고 대답하였습니다.
21그때 총리께서는 우리에게 그 아이를 데리고 와서 대면하게 하라고 하셨으므로
22우리는 그 아이가 아버지를 떠날 수 없으며 만일 떠나게 되면 아버지가 죽게 될 것이라고 대답하였습니다.
23그러나 총리께서는 우리에게 ‘너희 막내 동생을 데려오지 않으면 너희가 다시는 나를 보지 못할 것이다’ 라고 하셨습니다.
24“그래서 우리가 우리 아버지에게 돌아가서 총리께서 하신 말씀을 그대로 전했습니다.
25그 후에 우리 아버지가 다시 가서 양식을 좀 사오라고 하셨을 때
26우리는 이렇게 대답하였습니다. ‘우리가 내려갈 수 없습니다. 막내 동생을 우리와 함께 가게 해 주시면 우리가 내려가겠습니다. 그러나 막내 동생과 함께 가지 않으면 우리는 그 사람을 볼 수가 없습니다.’
27그때 아버지께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘너희도 알겠지만 44:27 또는 ‘내 아내가’내 아내 라헬은 나에게 두 아들만 낳아 주었다.
28그런데 하나는 나를 떠났으니 맹수에게 찢겨 죽은 것이 틀림없다. 그때 이후로 내가 아직 그를 보지 못했는데
29너희가 이 아이마저 내게서 뺏어 가려고 하는구나! 만일 그에게 무슨 일이 일어나게 되면 너희는 백발이 된 나를 슬픔 가운데서 무덤으로 내려보내는 자들이 될 것이다.’
30“아버지의 생명이 이 아이에게 달려 있는데 우리가 아버지에게 돌아갈 때 만일 이 아이가 우리와 같이 가지 않으면
31아이가 없는 것을 보고 아버지가 죽게 될 것입니다. 이렇게 되면 백발이 된 아버지를 우리가 죽이는 셈이 됩니다.
32게다가 나는 아버지에게 목숨을 걸고 이 아이의 안전을 보장하며 ‘만일 이 아이를 아버지에게 데리고 돌아오지 않으면 내가 평생 동안 그 죄의 대가를 치르겠습니다’ 하고 약속했습니다.
33이 아이 대신 내가 총리의 종이 되어 여기에 머물러 있겠습니다. 그러니 제발 이 아이는 형제들과 함께 돌아가게 해 주십시오.
34내가 아이를 데리고 가지 않고 어떻게 아버지에게 돌아갈 수 있겠습니까? 아버지에게 불행한 일이 닥치는 것을 내가 차마 볼 수 없습니다.”
