1And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. 3And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er. 4And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. 5And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him. 6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. 8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. 9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.38.10 displeased…: Heb. was evil in the eyes of the Lord 11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
12¶ And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.38.12 in process…: Heb. the days were multiplied 13And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep. 14And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.38.14 an open…: Heb. the door of eyes, or, of Enajim 15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. 16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me? 17And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?38.17 a kid: Heb. a kid of the goats 18And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. 19And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. 20And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not. 21Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? 24¶ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
27¶ And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. 29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.38.29 How hast…: or, Wherefore hast thou made this breach against thee?38.29 Pharez: that is A breach 30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

1那時，猶大離開了他的兄弟們，到亞杜蘭人希拉的家裡住。 2他在那裡遇見了迦南人書亞的女兒，就娶她為妻，與她同房。 3她懷孕生了一個兒子，猶大給他取名叫珥。 4她又懷孕生了一個兒子，給他取名叫俄南。 5她再次懷孕生了一個兒子，給他取名叫示拉。示拉是在基悉出生的。
6猶大給長子珥娶了她瑪為妻。 7耶和華見珥行為邪惡，就取走了他的性命。 8猶大對俄南說：「你要與哥哥的妻子她瑪同房，向她盡你做弟弟的本分，好替你哥哥傳宗接代。」 9俄南知道生了兒子也不歸自己，所以每次與她瑪同房都把精液遺在地上，免得給他哥哥留後。 10耶和華見俄南行為邪惡，就取走了他的性命。 11猶大恐怕示拉會像他的兩個哥哥一樣死去，就對兒媳她瑪說：「示拉還沒有長大，你先回娘家守寡吧。」
12多年後，猶大的妻子，即書亞的女兒死了，等到守喪的日子滿了，猶大就和他的朋友亞杜蘭人希拉去亭拿，到替他剪羊毛的人那裡。 13有人告訴她瑪說：「你公公到亭拿去剪羊毛了。」 14她瑪見示拉已經長大，卻仍然沒有娶她，就脫下寡婦的衣服，蒙上臉，換了裝束，坐在去亭拿路上的伊拿印城門口。 15猶大看見她蒙著臉，以為她是妓女， 16就走過去對她說：「你陪我睡覺吧。」猶大不知道她是自己的兒媳婦。她瑪問道：「你要我陪你睡覺，你給我什麼呢？」 17猶大回答說：「我會從羊群中取一隻山羊羔送給你。」她瑪問道：「羊還沒有送來以前，你給我什麼作抵押呢？」 18猶大問：「你要什麼作抵押呢？」她瑪說：「我要你的印、印帶和你的手杖。」猶大給了她，然後跟她睡覺。她瑪就這樣懷了孕。 19事後，她起來走了。她拿掉蒙臉的布，仍舊穿上寡婦的裝束。
20猶大託他的朋友亞杜蘭人送去一隻山羊羔，要從那女人手中換回抵押物，卻找不到她。 21他的朋友就問當地的人：「伊拿印路旁的廟妓在哪裡？」他們回答說：「這裡沒有廟妓。」 22他的朋友只好回去對猶大說：「我找不著她，當地人說那裡沒有廟妓。」 23猶大說：「讓她留著我的東西吧，免得我們成為笑柄。反正我把羊送過去了，只是你找不到她。」
24大約過了三個月，有人告訴猶大說：「你的兒媳婦她瑪不守婦道，並且懷孕了。」猶大說：「把她拉出來燒死！」 25他們正要把她拉出來，她請人帶口信給他公公，說：「這些東西的主人使我懷了孕，請你看這印、印帶和杖是誰的？」 26猶大認出是自己的東西，就說：「她比我更有理，因為我沒有讓示拉娶她。」猶大沒有再與她睡覺。
27她瑪臨產的時候，才知道腹中是一對雙胞胎。 28生產的時候，一個嬰兒先伸出手來，接生婆就把一條紅線繫在他的手上，說：「他是先出生的。」 29可是那嬰兒隨後卻把手縮回去，另一個嬰兒先出生了，接生婆說：「你怎麼搶先出來了？」因此，他的名字叫法勒斯38·29 「法勒斯」意思是「搶先出來」。。 30後來，那個手上繫有紅線的孩子也出生了，給他取名叫謝拉38·30 「謝拉」意思是「紅色」或「光明」。。
