15¶ And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be? 16And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. 18And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. 19And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. 20And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

ラケルとの出会い
1ヤコブはさらに旅を続け、ついに東の国に着きました。 2そこは広々とした牧草地で、見ると、井戸のそばに羊が三つの群れになって寝そべっていました。井戸の口には重い石のふたがかぶせてあります。 3羊の群れが全部そこに集まるまで石のふたをはずさないのが、この地方の習慣でした。水をやったあとは、また元どおり石でふたをしておくことになっていました。 4ヤコブは羊飼いたちに近づき、どこに住んでいるのか尋ねました。
「ハランだよ。」
5「では、ナホルの孫でラバンという人をご存じでは？」
「ラバンだって？ ああ、よく知ってるよ。」
6「そうですか。その方はお元気ですか。」
「元気だとも。順調にやっているしね。ああ、ちょうどよかった。ほら、あそこに羊を連れてやって来る娘、あれが娘さんのラケルだ。」
7「ありがとうございました。ところで余計なことかもしれませんが、羊に早く水をやって、草のある所へすぐ帰してやらなくていいのですか。こんなに早く草を食べさせるのをやめたら、腹をすかせませんか。」
8「羊や羊飼いがみな集まるまで、井戸のふたは取らない決まりでね。それまで水はお預けなんですよ。」
9話をしている間に、ラケルが父の羊の群れを連れて来ました。彼女は羊飼いだったのです。 10ヤコブは、彼女が伯父ラバンの娘で、いとこに当たり、羊はその伯父のものだとわかったので、井戸に近づいて石のふたをはずし、羊に水を飲ませました。 11それから、ラケルに口づけしました。あまりうれしくて気持ちが高ぶり、とうとう泣きだしたほどです。 12-13そして、自分は彼女の叔母リベカの息子で、ラケルにとってはいとこなのだと説明しました。ラケルはすぐ家へ駆け戻り、父親に報告しました。甥のヤコブが来たのです。すぐ迎えに行かなければなりません。ラバンは取る物も取りあえず駆けつけ、大歓迎で家に案内しました。ヤコブは伯父に、これまでのことを語りました。話は尽きません。
14「いやあ、うれしいなあ。甥のおまえがはるばるやって来てくれたのだからな。」ラバンも喜びを隠せません。
ヤコブの結婚
ヤコブが来てから、かれこれ一か月が過ぎたある日のこと、 15ラバンが言いました。「ヤコブ、甥だからといって、ただで働いてくれることはないんだよ。遠慮しなくていい。どんな報酬がほしいかね。」
16ラバンには二人の娘がありました。姉がレア、妹があのラケル。 17レアは弱々しい目をしていましたが、ラケルのほうは美しく、容姿もすぐれていました。 18ヤコブはラケルが好きだったので、ラバンに言いました。「もしラケルさんを妻に頂けるなら、七年間ただで働き、あなたに仕えます。」
19「いいだろう。一族以外の者と結婚させるより、おまえに嫁がせるほうがいいから。」
20ヤコブは、ラケルと結婚したい一心で、七年間けんめいに働きました。彼女を心から愛していたので、七年などあっという間でした。 21ついに、結婚できる時がきました。「さあ、すべきことはみなやり終えました。約束どおりラケルさんを下さい。彼女といっしょにさせてください。」
22ラバンは村中の人を招いて祝宴を開き、みんなで喜び合いました。 23ところがその夜、暗いのをさいわい、ラバンは姉のレアをヤコブのところに連れて行ったのです。ヤコブはそんなこととはつゆ知らず、レアといっしょに寝ました。 24ラバンは、奴隷の少女ジルパをレアにつけてやりました。 25朝になって、ヤコブが目を覚まし、見ると、レアがいるではありませんか。憤まんやる方ない気持ちです。すぐさまラバンのところへ行き、食ってかかりました。「なんてひどいことをするんですか！ ラケルと結婚したい一心で、私は七年も骨身を惜しまず働いたんですよ。その私をだますなんて、いったいどういうことですか！」
26「まあ、気を落ち着けてくれ。悪かったが、われわれのところでは、姉より先に妹を嫁に出すことはしないのだよ。 27とにかく婚礼の一週間をこのまま過ごしてくれたら、ラケルもおまえに嫁がせよう。ただし、もう七年間ここで働いてもらうということになるが。」
こううまく言い抜けられては、しかたありません。 28ヤコブはさらに七年働くことにしました。そして、ようやくラケルと結婚できたのです。 29ラケルは奴隷の少女ビルハを召使として連れて来ました。 30こうしてヤコブはラケルと床を共にしました。ヤコブはレアよりも彼女のほうを愛していたため、さらに七年も余計に、ラバンのもとで働いたのです。
レアとラケルの争い
31ヤコブがレアに冷たくするので、主は彼女に子どもを授け、ラケルには子どもがいませんでした。 32レアが産んだ最初の子は男の子で、レアは、「主は私の苦しみをわかってくださった。子どもができたのだから、夫もきっと私を愛してくれるでしょう」と言って、ルベン〔「私の息子を見てください」の意〕と名づけました。 33次も男の子で、彼女は、「主は私が愛されていないと知って、もう一人子どもを与えてくださった」と言って、シメオン〔「神は聞いてくださった」の意〕と名づけました。 34さらに三人目の子どもが生まれました。今度も男の子で、彼女は、「三人も男の子を産んだのだから、今度こそ愛してもらえるに違いない」と言って、レビ〔「結びつく」の意〕と名づけました。 35さらに子どもが生まれました。また男の子で、彼女は、「今こそ主をほめたたえよう」と言って、ユダ〔「ほめたたえる」の意〕と名づけました。そのあと、彼女には子どもが生まれませんでした。
