1And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: 7And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. 8And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 10And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

17¶ And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.26.19 springing: Heb. living 20And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.26.20 Esek: that is, Contention 21And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.26.21 Sitnah: that is, Hatred 22And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.26.22 Rehoboth: that is Room 23And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. 24And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.
26¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 27And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;26.28 We saw…: Heb. อิสอัคและอาบีเมเลค

1ต่อมาเกิดการกันดารอาหารในดินแดนนั้นอีกครั้งหนึ่งนอกเหนือจากการกันดารอาหารที่เคยเกิดขึ้นในสมัยอับราฮัม อิสอัคจึงไปหากษัตริย์อาบีเมเลคชาวฟีลิสเตียที่เมืองเกราร์ 2องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงปรากฏแก่อิสอัคและตรัสว่า “อย่าลงไปอียิปต์ จงอยู่ในแผ่นดินนี้อย่างที่เราบอกเจ้า 3จงอาศัยในแผ่นดินนี้สักระยะหนึ่ง เพื่อเราจะอยู่ช่วยเจ้าและอวยพรเจ้า เพราะเราจะยกดินแดนทั้งหมดนี้ให้แก่เจ้ากับลูกหลานของเจ้า และจะทำให้คำปฏิญาณที่เราได้สาบานไว้กับอับราฮัมบิดาของเจ้าสำเร็จ 4เราจะทำให้ลูกหลานของเจ้ามีจำนวนมากมายเหมือนดวงดาวในท้องฟ้า และจะยกดินแดนทั้งหมดนี้ให้แก่พวกเขา และประชาชาติทั่วโลกจะได้รับพรผ่านทางวงศ์วาน26:4 หรือเมล็ดพันธุ์ของเจ้า 5ทั้งนี้เพราะอับราฮัมได้เชื่อฟังเราและรักษาข้อกำหนด คำบัญชา กฎหมาย และบทบัญญัติของเรา” 6ฉะนั้นอิสอัคยังคงอยู่ที่เมืองเกราร์

8เมื่ออิสอัคอยู่ที่นั่นเป็นเวลานานแล้ว กษัตริย์อาบีเมเลคของชาวฟีลิสเตียมองลงมาจากหน้าต่างและเห็นอิสอัคคลอเคลียอยู่กับเรเบคาห์ภรรยาของเขา 9อาบีเมเลคจึงบัญชาให้นำตัวอิสอัคมาและกล่าวว่า “แท้จริงนางเป็นภรรยาของท่าน! ทำไมท่านจึงบอกว่า ‘นางเป็นน้องสาว’?”

10อาบีเมเลคจึงกล่าวว่า “ทำไมท่านทำกับเราอย่างนี้? ถ้าหากว่ามีชายใดไปนอนกับภรรยาของท่าน ท่านก็จะนำความผิดมาตกอยู่กับพวกเรา”
11ดังนั้นอาบีเมเลคจึงออกคำสั่งถึงคนทั้งปวงว่า “ผู้ใดก็ตามที่ล่วงเกินชายคนนี้หรือภรรยาของเขา จะถูกประหารชีวิตอย่างแน่นอน”
12อิสอัคปลูกพืชผลในดินแดนนั้น และในปีเดียวกันก็เก็บเกี่ยวได้ร้อยเท่า เพราะองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงอวยพรเขา 13เขาก็มั่งมีขึ้น ความมั่งคั่งของเขาก็เพิ่มพูนขึ้นทุกทีจนเขากลายเป็นคนใหญ่คนโต 14เขามีฝูงแพะแกะ วัว และคนรับใช้มากมายจนชาวฟีลิสเตียอิจฉา 15ดังนั้นพวกฟีลิสเตียจึงเอาดินถมบ่อน้ำทั้งหมดที่คนรับใช้ของอับราฮัมบิดาของเขาได้ขุดไว้ตั้งแต่สมัยที่อับราฮัมยังมีชีวิตอยู่
16แล้วอาบีเมเลคกล่าวกับอิสอัคว่า “ย้ายไปอยู่ที่อื่นเถิด ตอนนี้ท่านมีกำลังมากกว่าพวกเราแล้ว”
17อิสอัคจึงย้ายไปจากที่นั่นและตั้งถิ่นฐานในหุบเขาเกราร์ 18อิสอัคขุดบ่อน้ำต่างๆ ที่ขุดในสมัยอับราฮัมบิดาของเขาขึ้นมาใหม่ พวกฟีลิสเตียได้ถมบ่อน้ำเหล่านี้หลังจากที่อับราฮัมตายไป แล้วอิสอัคก็ตั้งชื่อให้บ่อน้ำตามชื่อเดิมที่บิดาเคยตั้งไว้
19คนรับใช้ของอิสอัคขุดพบบ่อน้ำจืดแห่งหนึ่งในหุบเขานั้น 20แต่คนเลี้ยงสัตว์เมืองเกราร์ทะเลาะกับคนเลี้ยงสัตว์ของอิสอัคและกล่าวว่า “น้ำนี้เป็นของเรา!” อิสอัคจึงตั้งชื่อบ่อน้ำนั้นว่าเอเสก26:20 แปลว่าโต้เถียง เพราะพวกเขาโต้เถียงกัน 21คนของอิสอัคจึงขุดบ่อน้ำขึ้นอีกบ่อหนึ่ง แต่มีการทะเลาะกันเรื่องบ่อน้ำนั้นด้วย ดังนั้นเขาจึงตั้งชื่อว่าสิตนาห์26:21 แปลว่าการเป็นศัตรูกัน 22เขาย้ายไปจากที่นั่นแล้วขุดบ่อน้ำอีกบ่อหนึ่ง คราวนี้ไม่มีใครมาทะเลาะเรื่องบ่อน้ำนั้น เขาจึงตั้งชื่อว่าเรโหโบท26:22 แปลว่าที่ว่าง เขากล่าวว่า “บัดนี้องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าได้ประทานที่ให้เราและเราจะเจริญรุ่งเรืองขึ้นในดินแดนนี้”
23จากที่นั่นเขาขึ้นไปยังเบเออร์เชบา 24องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงปรากฏแก่เขาในคืนนั้นและตรัสว่า “เราคือพระเจ้าของอับราฮัมบิดาของเจ้า อย่ากลัวเลย เพราะเราอยู่กับเจ้า เราจะอวยพรเจ้า และจะให้ลูกหลานของเจ้าทวีจำนวนขึ้นเพราะเห็นแก่อับราฮัมผู้รับใช้ของเรา”
25อิสอัคจึงสร้างแท่นบูชาขึ้นที่นั่นและนมัสการออกพระนามของพระยาห์เวห์ เขาตั้งเต็นท์ที่นั่น และคนรับใช้ของเขาก็ขุดบ่อน้ำบ่อหนึ่งขึ้นที่นั่นด้วย
26ในระหว่างนั้น กษัตริย์อาบีเมเลคกับอาหุสซัทที่ปรึกษาส่วนพระองค์และแม่ทัพฟีโคล์ เดินทางจากเมืองเกราร์มาพบอิสอัค 27อิสอัคถามพวกเขาว่า “พวกท่านมาหาข้าพเจ้าทำไมในเมื่อพวกท่านเห็นว่าข้าพเจ้าเป็นศัตรูและขับไล่ข้าพเจ้าออกมา?”
28พวกเขาตอบว่า “พวกเราเห็นชัดว่าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าสถิตอยู่กับท่าน ดังนั้นพวกเราจึงพูดว่า ‘ควรจะทำสัตย์สาบานตกลงกันระหว่างเรา’ คือระหว่างพวกเรากับท่าน ให้พวกเราทำสนธิสัญญากับท่าน 29ว่าท่านจะไม่ทำอันตรายพวกเราเหมือนที่พวกเราไม่ได้ทำร้ายท่าน แต่ได้ปฏิบัติต่อท่านอย่างดีเสมอมาและส่งท่านจากมาอย่างสันติ และบัดนี้ท่านได้รับพรจากองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า”
30อิสอัคจึงจัดงานเลี้ยงให้พวกเขา คนเหล่านั้นก็ได้กินดื่ม 31เช้าตรู่วันรุ่งขึ้น ต่างฝ่ายก็ให้สัตย์สาบานต่อกัน จากนั้นอิสอัคก็ส่งพวกเขาให้เดินทางต่อไป และพวกเขาก็จากไปอย่างสันติ
32ในวันนั้นเองคนรับใช้ของอิสอัคมาบอกเรื่องบ่อน้ำที่ขุดว่า “เราพบน้ำแล้ว!” 33เขาจึงตั้งชื่อบ่อนั้นว่าชิบาห์26:33 แปลว่าคำสัญญาหรือเจ็ดก็ได้ และเมืองนั้นจึงได้ชื่อว่าเบเออร์เชบา26:33 แปลว่าบ่อแห่งคำสัญญาหรือบ่อแห่งเจ็ดก็ได้ มาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
ยาโคบได้พรจากอิสอัค
34เมื่อเอซาวอายุได้สี่สิบปี เขาแต่งงานกับยูดิธ บุตรสาวของเบเออรีชาวฮิตไทต์ และกับบาเสมัท บุตรสาวของเอโลนชาวฮิตไทต์ 35พวกเขาทำให้อิสอัคกับเรเบคาห์ขมขื่นใจ
