1And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6¶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: 7And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. 8And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. 9And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. 10And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. 11And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

26¶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. 27And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? 28And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;26.28 We saw…: Heb. 6イサクはゲラルに滞在することにしました。 7しかし、リベカのことを町の男たちに何と説明したらいいでしょう。思案のあげく、イサクは「彼女は妹だ」と言うことにしました。もし妻だと言えば、だれかが彼女に目をつけ、手に入れたいと思った時、自分が殺されるかもしれないからです。それほどリベカは美しかったのです。 8しかし、それからしばらくして、ペリシテ人の王アビメレクは、たまたま、イサクがリベカを愛撫しているのを窓越しに見てしまいました。
9アビメレク王はすぐさまイサクを呼びつけました。「あの女はおまえの妻ではないか。なぜ妹だなどとうそをついたのだ！」
「いのちが惜しかったのです。だれかが私を殺して妻を奪おうとするのではないかと、心配だったものですから。」
10「全く、よくもあんなうそがつけたものだ。もしだれかがあなたの妻と寝たら、どうするつもりだったのか。そうなったら、さばかれるのはわれわれのほうなのだ。」 11そこでアビメレク王は布告しました。「イサクとその妻とに危害を加える者は死刑に処す。」
12その年、イサクの畑は大豊作でした。まいた種の百倍も収穫があったのです。まさに神からの祝福です。 13それからは裕福になる一方で、たちまち資産家になりました。 14羊ややぎのおびただしい群れ、ばく大な数の牛、そして大ぜいの召使、全部イサクのものでした。ペリシテ人はおもしろくありません。 15それで、いやがらせに、彼の井戸を片っぱしから埋めてしまいました。彼の父アブラハムの使用人たちが掘った井戸すべてを埋めたのです。
16アビメレク王はイサクに、この国から立ち去ってほしいと頼みました。「どこかよその土地に行ってくれないか。あなたは非常に裕福で、今ではもう、われわれなど歯が立たないほどの力を持っている。」
井戸をめぐる争い
17イサクは町を出て、ゲラルの谷間に住みつきました。 18そして父アブラハムの井戸、父の死後ペリシテ人が埋めてしまったあの井戸を、もう一度掘ったのです。井戸の名前も、父親が以前つけたのと同じ（ベエル・シェバ）にしました。 19イサクの羊飼いたちも、ゲラルに新しい井戸を一つ掘り、勢いよく水があふれる水源を発見しました。
20すると、土地の羊飼いたちが来て、井戸は自分たちのものだと主張しました。「ここはおれたちの土地だ。だから井戸もおれたちのものだ」と、イサクの羊飼いたちに言いがかりをつけたのです。イサクはその井戸を、「エセク」〔「言い争いの井戸」の意〕と名づけました。 21イサクの羊飼いたちは別の井戸を掘りましたが、その井戸の所有権をめぐって、また争いが起きました。今度はそれを「シテナ」〔「怒りの井戸」の意〕と名づけ、 22あきらめて、また新しい所で掘りました。今度は、土地の者たちとの争いがありませんでした。そこで彼らはそれを「レホボテ」〔「広々とした場所の井戸」の意〕と名づけ、言いました。「とうとう主は、広々とした場所を与えてくださった。もう大丈夫だ。これからはここで繁栄していくのだ。」
23さて、イサクがベエル・シェバに行った時のことです。 24その夜、主が現れて言いました。「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神である。恐れてはいけない。わたしはあなたとともにいてあなたを祝福する。子孫を増やし、大きな国にしよう。わたしに聞き従ったアブラハムに約束したとおりに。」 25イサクは祭壇を築き、主を礼拝しました。そして、そこに住むことにし、彼の使用人たちは井戸を掘りました。
アビメレクとの契約
26ある日、イサクのところにゲラルから客が来ました。アビメレク王が、顧問のアフザテと軍の司令官ピコルとを連れて来たのです。
27「どういうご用ですか。あんなひどい仕打ちをして、私を追っ払ったのに、どうしてここまで来たのですか。」
28「まあ、そう言わないでください。ほかでもありません、あなたは実に恵まれた人だ。神様に祝福されていることがよくわかります。それで、お互いに条約を結びたいと思ったわけです。 29私たちに危害を加えないと約束してください。私たちも今まで、あなたに危害を加えなかったし、むしろ好意的にしてきたつもりです。あの時だって、武力をふるったわけではないし、納得のうえで国を出てもらいました。それはそれとして、今、あなたは神様に祝福されているのです。」
30そこでイサクは、ごちそうを作って一行をもてなしました。食事を共にするのは、契約を結ぶ備えでもあったのです。 31翌朝起きるとすぐ、彼らは不可侵条約を結び、厳粛な誓いを交わしました。こうして一行は、イサクに見送られて国へ帰りました。
32ちょうどその日、イサクの使用人たちが来て、「ようやく水が出ました」と報告しました。井戸を掘っているところだったからです。 33そこでイサクは、その井戸を「シブア」〔「誓いの井戸」の意〕と名づけました。そこにできた町も「ベエル・シェバ」〔「誓い」の意〕と呼ばれるようになり、今もその名のままです。
エサウの結婚
34ところで、エサウは四十歳でヘテ人ベエリの娘エフディテと結婚し、またヘテ人エロンの娘バセマテも妻にしました。 35この結婚は、両親のイサクとリベカには悩みの種となりました。
