1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

10¶ And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. 11And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: 12Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. 13Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
14¶ And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair. 15The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels. 17And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife. 18And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? 19Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. 20And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Gott erwählt Abram
1Der Herr sagte zu Abram: »Geh fort aus deinem Land, verlass deine Heimat und deine Verwandtschaft und zieh in das Land, das ich dir zeigen werde! 2Ich werde dich zum Stammvater eines großen Volkes machen und dir viel Gutes tun; dein Name wird überall berühmt sein. Durch dich werden auch andere Menschen am Segen teilhaben. 3Wer dir Gutes wünscht, den werde ich segnen. Wer dir aber Böses wünscht, den werde ich verfluchen! Alle Völker der Erde sollen durch dich gesegnet werden.«
4Abram gehorchte und machte sich auf den Weg. Er war 75 Jahre alt, als er Haran verließ. 5Mit ihm kamen seine Frau Sarai, sein Neffe Lot sowie alle Knechte und Mägde, die sie in Haran in den Dienst genommen hatten. Mit ihrem ganzen Besitz brachen sie in Richtung Kanaan auf. Als sie schließlich dort ankamen, 6durchzogen sie das Land, das damals von den Kanaanitern bewohnt wurde. Bei Sichem ließen sie sich nieder, in der Nähe der Eiche von More12,6 Oder: Orakeleiche. – Möglicherweise handelt es sich um einen heiligen Baum, von dem man glaubte, dass man dort göttliche Offenbarungen erhalten könnte. 7An dieser Stätte zeigte der Herr sich Abram und versprach ihm: »Ich werde dieses Land deinen Nachkommen geben!« Abram schichtete Steine auf als Altar für den Herrn, dort, wo Gott ihm erschienen war. 8Dann zog er weiter nach Süden zu dem Gebirge östlich von Bethel. Zwischen Bethel im Westen und Ai im Osten schlugen Abram und die Seinen ihre Zelte auf. Auch hier baute er einen Altar und betete zum Herrn.
9Dann setzte Abram seine Reise immer weiter nach Süden fort.
Abram fürchtet um sein Leben
10Im Land Kanaan brach eine schwere Hungersnot aus. Abram zog nach Ägypten, um während dieser Zeit dort Zuflucht zu suchen. 11Kurz vor der ägyptischen Grenze sagte er zu seiner Frau Sarai: »Ich befürchte, du wirst bei den Männern Aufsehen erregen, weil du so schön bist. 12Wenn dich die Ägypter sehen, sagen sie bestimmt: ›Das ist seine Frau.‹ Dir werden sie nichts tun, aber mich werden sie umbringen, um an dich heranzukommen. 13Sag doch einfach, du seist meine Schwester, dann werden sie mich bestimmt am Leben lassen und deinetwegen gut behandeln!«
14Tatsächlich zog Sarai die Aufmerksamkeit der Ägypter auf sich. 15Selbst die Beamten des Pharaos waren beeindruckt und lobten Sarais Schönheit vor ihm. Da ließ er Sarai in seinen Palast holen 16und überhäufte Abram ihretwegen mit Geschenken: Diener, Schafe, Ziegen, Rinder, Esel und Kamele.
17Aber der Herr bestrafte den Pharao und seine Familie mit Krankheiten, weil er sich an Abrams Frau Sarai vergriffen hatte. 18Da rief der Pharao Abram zu sich und stellte ihn zur Rede: »Was hast du mir da angetan? Warum hast du mir nicht gesagt, dass sie deine Frau ist? 19Warum hast du behauptet, sie sei deine Schwester, so dass ich sie mir zur Frau nahm? Hier, nimm sie zurück! Macht, dass ihr wegkommt!« 20Er beauftragte Soldaten, die Abram und seine Frau mit ihrem ganzen Besitz zur ägyptischen Grenze zurückbrachten.
