1Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. 2And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. 3But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: 4And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: 5To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 6But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: 7But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) 9And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. 10Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do. 11But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. 12For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. 13And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. 14But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? 15We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
1Poi, dopo quattordici anni, tornai di nuovo a Gerusalemme, questa volta con Barnaba, e presi con me anche Tito. 2Andai là con lʼordine preciso da parte del Signore di comunicare ai fratelli del posto lo stesso messaggio che predicavo ai pagani. In privato ne parlai con le autorità della chiesa, perché capissero tutti ciò che stavo insegnando, con la speranza che sarebbero stati dʼaccordo, infatti non volevo che risultasse inutile il lavoro che avevo fatto e che stavo facendo. 3Ebbene, dopo questo colloquio, neppure Tito, il mio compagno che non era ebreo, fu costretto a farsi circoncidere.
È con lʼubbidienza alla legge che si ottiene la salvezza?
4Il problema della circoncisione non si sarebbe presentato mai più, se non fosse stato per alcuni falsi «cristiani», veri e propri impostori, che si erano infiltrati fra noi per spiarci e sapere di quali libertà godiamo noi cristiani, per esempio se ubbidiamo o meno alle leggi ebraiche. Lo scopo di questi individui era di riportarci alla schiavitù delle loro leggi, 5ma noi non li abbiamo ascoltati nemmeno per un momento, perché non volevamo confondervi, né farvi pensare che la salvezza poteva essere guadagnata facendosi circoncidere o obbedendo alle leggi ebraiche. Volevamo che la verità del Vangelo di Cristo rimanesse ben salda fra voi.
6Del resto, le persone considerate più importanti nella Chiesa non ebbero niente da aggiungere a ciò che predicavo. (Il fatto poi che fossero persone importanti non faceva alcuna differenza per me, perché davanti a Dio siamo tutti uguali). 7-9Anzi, Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, riconosciuti come i pilastri della Chiesa, riconobbero che Dio si era servito di me per annunciare il Vangelo ai pagani, così come Pietro era stato mandato a predicare agli Ebrei, perché lo stesso Dio aveva dato ad ognuno di noi capacità differenti. Ebbene, dicevo, quando si resero conto di tutto questo, strinsero calorosamente la mano a me e a Barnaba e cʼincoraggiarono a continuare la nostra predicazione fra i pagani, mentre essi continuavano il loro lavoro fra gli Ebrei. 10Di una sola cosa si raccomandarono: che ci ricordassimo di aiutare i poveri, cosa che stava molto a cuore anche a me.
11Ma quando Pietro venne ad Antiochia, mi opposi a lui pubblicamente senza risparmiargli i rimproveri, perché aveva torto. 12Prima infatti mangiava con i credenti di origine pagana (a cui non importava di essere circoncisi, né di seguire le altre leggi ebraiche), ma dopo lʼarrivo di certi amici giudei di Giacomo, non volle più mangiare con loro, perché temeva le critiche di questi Giudei osservanti delle leggi, i quali continuavano a sostenere che la circoncisione era necessaria per la salvezza. 13Allora anche gli altri cristiani di origine ebraica, e perfino Barnaba, cominciarono a seguire lʼesempio di Pietro, comportandosi da perfetti ipocriti. 14Quando mʼaccorsi di ciò che stava succedendo e vidi che non erano onesti e non seguivano più la verità del Vangelo, in presenza di tutti dissi a Pietro: «Anche se sei giudeo di nascita, hai lasciato da tempo le leggi ebraiche. Perché, allora, tutto ad un tratto, cerchi di obbligare gli altri a vivere come gli Ebrei? 15Noi siamo giudei di nascita; non proveniamo da altri popoli pagani, 16ma poiché siamo credenti, sappiamo benissimo che non possiamo diventare giusti agli occhi di Dio, obbedendo alle nostre leggi ebraiche, ma soltanto se abbiamo fede in Gesù Cristo che toglie i nostri peccati. Anche noi abbiamo creduto in Gesù Cristo per essere salvati da Dio. E questa salvezza la dobbiamo soltanto alla fede, e non perché abbiamo obbedito alle leggi ebraiche. Perché nessuno sarà mai salvato osservandole».
17Dato che noi abbiamo cercato di essere resi giusti in Cristo, è così allora che siamo diventati anche noi come i pagani che non osservano la legge. Questo significa forse che Cristo ci provoca al peccato? Assolutamente no! 18Piuttosto, è proprio dando valore ai vecchi sistemi che avevamo eliminato, che diamo la prova di essere peccatori; parlo del sistema di cercare la salvezza ubbidendo alle leggi ebraiche. 19Per quanto mi riguarda, fu proprio leggendo le Scritture che arrivai a capire che non avrei mai potuto trovare il favore di Dio con lʼubbidienza alle leggi (che non poteva mai essere perfetta), e mi accorsi che Dio mi avrebbe dato la vita soltanto se avevo fede in Cristo. 20Sono stato crocifisso con Cristo e non sono più io che vivo, ma è Cristo che vive in me. La vita che vivo ora in questo corpo è il risultato della mia fede nel Figlio di Dio, che mi ha amato e volle morire per me. 21Non sono uno di quelli che considerano la morte di Cristo senza significato. Infatti, se potessimo essere salvati osservando le leggi ebraiche, allora Cristo sarebbe morto per niente.
