1Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.10.1 wept…: Heb. wept a great weeping 2And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. 3Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.10.3 to put…: Heb. to bring forth 4Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. 5Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. 6¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. 7And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; 8And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.10.8 forfeited: Heb. devoted
9¶ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. 15¶ Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.10.15 were…: Heb. stood 16And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.

A confissão do pecado
1Enquanto eu estava assim, prostrado no solo, diante do templo, chorando, orando e fazendo estas confissões, foi-se juntando à minha volta uma grande multidão de homens, mulheres e crianças que choravam comigo. 2Disse-me então Secanias, filho de Jeiel da família de Elão: “Reconhecemos o nosso pecado contra o nosso Deus, porque casámos com mulheres pagãs oriundas dos povos nossos vizinhos; mas ainda há esperança para Israel, apesar disto tudo. 3Aceitamos diante do nosso Deus separar-nos das mulheres pagãs e despedi-las com os seus filhos; seguiremos o conselho do Senhor e o dos que temem os mandamentos do nosso Deus; faça-se conforme a Lei do nosso Deus. 4Levanta-te, anima-te e diz-nos o que fazer, para que este assunto fique resolvido; podes contar com toda a nossa obediência.”
5Levantei-me, pois, e pedi aos líderes dos sacerdotes e dos levitas, assim como a todo o povo de Israel que prometesse fazer como Secanias tinha dito, e eles assim fizeram. 6De seguida, dirigi-me às dependências de Jeoanã, filho de Eliasibe, no templo; contudo, fiquei sem beber nem comer, porque estava muito acabrunhado, por causa do pecado dos retornados do exílio.
7Foi então feita uma proclamação em toda Jerusalém e Judá, convocando a população a vir a Jerusalém, 8dentro de três dias, e anunciando que os anciãos e os chefes tinham decidido que se alguém recusasse apresentar-se teria os seus bens confiscados e seria excluído dos exilados que regressaram.
9Nos três dias indicados, no dia 20 do nono mês10.9 Mês de Quisleu. Entre a lua nova do mês de novembro e o mês de dezembro., todos os homens de Judá e de Benjamim se apresentaram e sentaram no espaço livre que havia defronte do templo. Estavam temerosos, por causa da seriedade do assunto, e também preocupados com as grandes chuvas. 10Esdras, o sacerdote, levantou-se e falou-lhes: “Vocês pecaram, porque casaram com mulheres pagãs; estamos agora ainda mais sob a condenação de Deus do que dantes. 11Confessem os vossos pecados ao Senhor, o Deus dos vossos pais, e façam o que ele vos pede: separem-se das gentes pagãs à nossa volta e dessas mulheres.”
12Toda a congregação disse em voz alta: “Faremos como dizes. 13Contudo, isso não é coisa que se faça num dia ou dois; somos muitos os que estamos envolvidos nesta transgressão; além disso, chove de tal maneira que não poderemos ficar aqui muito tempo. 14Que os nossos chefes nomeiem juízes; quem está nessa situação de se ter ligado a uma mulher pagã, venha apresentar-se, na data determinada, acompanhado dos anciãos e dos juízes da sua cidade; cada caso será decidido da melhor maneira e a ira do nosso Deus vai afastar-se de nós.” 15Apenas Jónatas, filho de Asael, Jaseias, filho de Ticvá, Mesulão e Sabetai, o levita, não concordaram com essa forma de agir.
