1Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
7¶ And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
11¶ And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. 13And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. 15And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
16Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: 17And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. 18And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.

Rugul în flăcări – delegarea lui Moise
1Moise păștea turma socrului său, Ietro, preotul din Midian. El și‑a dus turma dincolo de pustie și a ajuns la Horeb, muntele lui Dumnezeu. 2Acolo, Îngerul Domnului i S‑a arătat într‑o flacără de foc care ieșea din mijlocul unui rug. Moise s‑a uitat și iată că, deși rugul ardea, totuși nu se mistuia. 3Atunci Moise a zis: „Trebuie să mă apropii ca să văd această priveliște deosebită. Oare de ce nu se mistuie rugul?“
4Când Domnul a văzut că s‑a apropiat să privească, Dumnezeu l‑a chemat din rug și a zis:
– Moise, Moise!
El a răspuns:
– Iată‑mă!
5Dumnezeu a zis:
– Nu te apropia de acest loc! Dă‑ți jos sandalele din picioare, căci locul pe care stai este un pământ sfânt!
6Apoi El a zis:
– Eu sunt Dumnezeul tatălui tău, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Dumnezeul lui Isaac și Dumnezeul lui Iacov.
Moise și‑a ascuns fața, căci se temea să se uite la Dumnezeu.
7Domnul a zis:
– Am văzut într-adevăr asuprirea poporului Meu care este în Egipt și i‑am auzit strigătul scos din cauza asupritorilor7 Cuvântul ebraic descrie o persoană care dirijează, conduce sau stăpânește peste un grup de sclavi sau supuși, impunându‑și autoritatea în mod violent (vezi Is. 8:3). lui, căci îi cunosc durerile. 8Am coborât să‑l eliberez din mâna egiptenilor și să‑l duc din țara aceea într‑o țară bună și largă, în care curge lapte și miere, în locul în care se află canaaniții, hitiții, amoriții, periziții, hiviții și iebusiții. 9Iată că strigătul fiilor lui Israel a ajuns până la Mine. Am văzut cum îi asupresc egiptenii. 10Acum, vino! Te voi trimite la Faraon ca să scoți din Egipt poporul Meu, pe fiii lui Israel.
11Moise I‑a răspuns lui Dumnezeu:
– Cine sunt eu, să merg la Faraon și să‑i scot pe fiii lui Israel din Egipt?
12El a zis:
– Eu voi fi cu tine. Acesta va fi semnul pentru tine că Eu te‑am trimis: când vei scoate poporul din Egipt, Îi veți sluji lui Dumnezeu pe muntele acesta.
13Dar Moise I‑a răspuns lui Dumnezeu:
– Iată, când voi merge la fiii lui Israel și le voi zice: „Dumnezeul părinților voștri m‑a trimis la voi“, iar ei mă vor întreba „Care este Numele Său“, ce le voi răspunde?
14Dumnezeu i‑a zis lui Moise:
– EU SUNT CEL CE SUNT14 Sau: EU SUNT CEL CE PURUREA SUNT (în ebraică, verbele sunt folosite, în acest caz, la timpul imperfect, deoarece, în gândirea ebraică, ființa este un concept dinamic. Sensul nu implică numai existența, ci, în primul rând, prezența lui YHWH [vezi nota următoare] ca izbăvitor și susținător al lui Israel de aici înainte). Versiunea LXX, traducere influențată de gândirea greacă, pentru care ființa era un concept static, redă: EU SUNT CEL CARE [ESTE].!
Apoi a zis:
– Așa să le spui fiilor lui Israel: „EU SUNT“ m‑a trimis la voi.
15Dumnezeu i‑a mai zis lui Moise:
– Așa să le spui fiilor lui Israel: „Domnul15 Tetragrama divină YHWH, nume sfânt a cărui pronunție a încetat în perioada robiei babiloniene datorită temerii de a nu se comite sacrilegiu. Forma scrisă YHWH s‑a păstrat, dar forma de pronunție a fost înlocuită peste tot cu Adonai, în traducere: DOMNUL, expresie preluată de Septuaginta (traducerea greacă a VT) și apoi de celelalte traduceri. Tetragrama derivă din rădăcina verbului a fi (HWH) și poate avea sensul: El este., Dumnezeul părinților voștri, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Dumnezeul lui Isaac și Dumnezeul lui Iacov m‑a trimis la voi. Acesta este Numele Meu pe veci și acesta este o aducere-aminte a Mea din generație în generație.“
16Du‑te, adună‑i pe bătrânii lui Israel16 Șefi de familii și de clanuri, recunoscuți ca autoritate la toate popoarele orientale. Ei aveau rol de (1) judecători în cadrul comunității locale (Deut. 19:12; 21:1-9, 18-21; 22:13-21; 25:5-10) sau de (2) lideri militari (Ios. 8:10). Ca instituție, Sfatul Bătrânilor lui Israel este atestat în special în perioada monarhiei, cu rol de consiliu (2 Sam. 3:17; 5:3; 17:4; 1 Regi 20:7); [peste tot în carte]. și spune‑le: „Domnul, Dumnezeul părinților voștri, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, al lui Isaac și al lui Iacov, mi S‑a arătat, zicând: «Am luat aminte la voi și la ce vi se face în Egipt. 17Am zis că vă voi scoate de sub asuprirea Egiptului și vă voi duce în țara canaaniților, a hitiților, a amoriților, a periziților, a hiviților și a iebusiților, într‑o țară în care curge lapte și miere.»“ 18Ei vor asculta de glasul tău, așa că tu, împreună cu bătrânii lui Israel, veți merge la regele Egiptului și îi veți zice: „Domnul, Dumnezeul evreilor, S‑a întâlnit cu noi. Acum, lasă‑ne, te rugăm, să mergem cale de trei zile în pustie, ca să aducem jertfe Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru.“ 19Totuși, Eu știu că regele Egiptului nu vă va lăsa să plecați decât datorită unei mâini puternice. 20Eu Îmi voi întinde mâna și voi lovi Egiptul cu toate minunile Mele, pe care le voi face în mijlocul lui. După aceea regele Egiptului vă va lăsa să plecați. 21Voi face ca poporul acesta să găsească bunăvoință înaintea21 Lit.: în ochii. egiptenilor în așa fel încât, atunci când veți pleca, să nu plecați cu mâinile goale. 22Fiecare femeie va cere vecinei ei și oricărei femei care locuiește în casa vecinilor, lucruri de argint, lucruri de aur și îmbrăcăminte. Acestea le veți pune pe fiii și pe fiicele voastre și astfel îi veți prăda pe egipteni.
