1And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:12.3 lamb: or, kid 4And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. 5Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:12.5 of…: Heb. son of a year 6And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.12.6 in…: Heb. between the two evenings 7And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 8And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. 10And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
11¶ And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’s passover. 12For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.12.12 gods: or, princes 13And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.12.13 to destroy…: Heb. for a destruction 14And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. 15Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 16And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.12.16 man: Heb. soul 17And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
18¶ In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. 19Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 20Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
21¶ Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.12.21 lamb: or, kid 22And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. 23For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you. 24And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. 26And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. 28And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
29¶ And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.12.29 dungeon: Heb. house of the pit 30And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
31¶ And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said. 32Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. 33And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men. 34And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.12.34 kneadingtroughs: or, dough 35And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: 36And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. 37¶ And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children. 38And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.12.38 a mixed…: Heb. a great mixture 39And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
40¶ Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. 42It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.12.42 a night…: Heb. a night of observations
43¶ And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof: 44But every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. 45A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. 46In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. 47All the congregation of Israel shall keep it.12.47 keep…: Heb. do it 48And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof. 49One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you. 50Thus did all the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they. 51And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
A Páscoa
(Lv 23.5-8; Nm 28.16-25; Dt 16.1-8)
1O Senhor disse depois a Moisés e a Aarão: 2“Daqui em diante, este será o primeiro mês do ano e o mês mais importante do vosso calendário. 3Todos os anos, no dia 10 deste mesmo mês, isto será o que terão de anunciar ao povo de Israel: cada família tomará um cordeiro. 4Se for uma família pequena poderá partilhar um cordeiro com outra família vizinha. Dependerá, portanto, do tamanho da família. 5Este cordeiro deverá ser um macho de um ano, mas sem nenhum defeito. Em vez de um cordeiro, poderá ser um cabrito.
6Deverão guardá-lo até ao dia 14 deste mesmo mês e, nesse dia, ele será morto, ao cair da tarde, pela assembleia do povo de Israel. 7Depois o seu sangue será posto nos dois lados e na parte de cima da entrada da casa. O sangue que usarem para isso será o do cordeiro que for comido nessa casa. 8Toda a gente deverá comer a carne assada do cordeiro nessa noite, acompanhada de pão sem fermento e de ervas amargas. 9Não poderá ser comido nem cru, nem cozido, mas sim assado no forno, incluindo a cabeça, as pernas, o coração e as vísceras. 10Além disso, deverá ser comido todo ele nessa noite, sem deixar nada para o dia seguinte. Se algum resto tiver de ficar, queimem-no. 11Ao comê-lo devem estar vestidos e preparados como para uma longa viagem, com os sapatos de marcha e a vara na mão, e será comido à pressa. Isto é a Páscoa do Senhor.
12Porque eu passarei esta noite através da terra do Egito e matarei todos os filhos mais velhos, de entre os homens, e os primeiros nascidos dos machos entre os animais, e executarei o meu julgamento sobre todos os deuses do Egito, pois eu sou o Senhor. 13O sangue que tiverem colocado nas ombreiras e na verga das portas mostrará que vocês me obedeceram. Quando eu vir o sangue, passarei adiante e não matarei o filho primogénito dessa família, quando vier ferir o país do Egito.
14Celebrarão este acontecimento cada ano. É uma lei para sempre que vos lembrará esta noite especial. 15Esta celebração durará sete dias, durante os quais comerão apenas pão sem fermento. Quem desobedecer a este mandamento durante os sete dias da celebração será expulso da comunidade de Israel. 16Tanto no primeiro dia da celebração como no sétimo, haverá serviços religiosos especiais para toda a congregação, e não se fará trabalho de espécie alguma, exceto o necessário para a preparação dos alimentos.
17Esta celebração dos pães sem fermento, que terá lugar todos os anos, vos fará lembrar o dia em que vos vou tirar para fora do Egito. Por isso, é um mandamento que vocês terão de cumprir neste dia, anualmente, para sempre. 18Comerão apenas pão sem fermento, desde a noite do dia 14 até à noite do dia 21 deste mesmo mês. 19Durante os sete dias não deverá haver qualquer vestígio de fermento nas vossas casas. E se alguém nesse período comer seja o que for com levedura deverá ser expulso da comunidade de Israel. Tais regras terão de se aplicar igualmente aos estrangeiros que viverem convosco e aos naturais da terra. 20Repito: durante esse tempo não devem comer nada que tenha fermento, apenas pães sem fermento.”
21Moisés chamou então todos os anciãos de Israel e disse-lhes: “Escolham cordeiros dos vossos rebanhos, um cordeiro para uma ou mais famílias de acordo com o número de pessoas de cada família, e matem-no para que Deus ao passar não vos destrua: é o sacrifício da Páscoa. 22Escorram o sangue para uma bacia, façam um molho de ramos de hissopo e com ele ponham o sangue do cordeiro nos lados e na parte de cima da entrada da casa. Ninguém deverá sair nessa noite. 23Porque o Senhor passará por toda a terra para matar os egípcios, mas quando vir o sinal do sangue nas ombreiras e nas vergas da entrada, passará adiante e não permitirá que o destruidor entre e mate o filho mais velho. 24E lembrem-se: isto é uma lei para sempre, para vocês e para a vossa posteridade.
25Quando entrarem na terra que o Senhor vos der, como prometeu, quando estiverem a celebrar esta Páscoa, 26e os vossos filhos vos perguntarem: ‘O que é que isto significa?’, 27responderão assim: ‘É a celebração do sacrifício da páscoa do Senhor, quando ele feriu de morte os egípcios, ao ter passado sobre nós, sobre as casas do povo de Israel, e não nos destruiu.’ ” Então todos inclinaram as suas cabeças e adoraram o Senhor.
O êxodo
28O povo de Israel fez como Moisés e Aarão mandaram.
29Naquela noite, à meia-noite, o Senhor matou todos os primogénitos da terra do Egito, desde o filho mais velho do Faraó, seu sucessor no trono, até ao do prisioneiro que estava no cárcere, inclusive dos animais.
30O Faraó e a sua corte, assim como todo o povo do Egito, levantaram-se de noite. Começou a ouvir-se um clamor de aflição por toda a terra, porque não havia uma só casa em que a morte não tivesse entrado.
31O Faraó convocou Moisés e Aarão mesmo durante a noite e disse-lhes: “Deixem-nos! Vão-se embora todos e sirvam o Senhor como pretendem. 32Levem o gado e os rebanhos. Não deixem de me dar a vossa bênção de despedida.”
33Ao mesmo tempo, os egípcios faziam pressão sobre o povo de Israel para que saíssem da terra o mais depressa possível, porque diziam: “Se não, acabamos por morrer todos!”
34Os israelitas tomaram consigo a massa sem fermento, embrulharam as amassadeiras na roupa que tinham vestida ou puseram-nas ao ombro. 35Fizeram também como Moisés dissera: pediram aos egípcios que lhes dessem objetos e recipientes de prata e ouro assim como roupa. 36O Senhor fez nascer um movimento de simpatia dos egípcios a favor do povo, de tal forma que deram tudo de que os israelitas precisavam, ficando praticamente despojados de tudo o tinham.
37Nessa noite, o povo de Israel deixou Ramessés em direção a Sucote. Eram 600 000, só os homens, não contando as mulheres e as crianças; e todos iam a pé. 38Além disso, uma grande mistura de gente foi com eles e havia ainda o gado e os rebanhos. Era um vasto êxodo de animais.
39Cozeram pães sem fermento, com a massa que tinham trazido do Egito, porque não tinham tido tempo para preparar outras provisões.
40Os filhos de Israel estiveram 430 anos completos no Egito. 41Foi no último dia desses 430 anos que todo o povo do Senhor deixou aquela terra.
A instituição da Páscoa
42Essa foi a noite escolhida pelo Senhor para tirar o seu povo fora do Egito e, por tal, escolhida para a celebração anual da salvação do Senhor.
43O Senhor disse a Moisés e a Aarão: “Estes são os regulamentos respeitantes à comemoração da Páscoa: Nenhum estrangeiro comerá do cordeiro, 44porém os servos comprados por dinheiro podem comer, se tiverem sido circuncidados. 45Mas o estrangeiro e o assalariado, esses não. 46Todos aqueles que comem do cordeiro devem estar juntos numa casa, não vão comê-lo para fora. Também não devem quebrar nenhum osso do cordeiro. 47Toda a congregação de Israel celebrará esta festividade ao mesmo tempo. 48Ainda, quanto aos estrangeiros, se estiverem a viver convosco e quiserem comemorar a Páscoa na vossa companhia, terão de fazer circuncidar todos os indivíduos do sexo masculino. Só assim poderão vir e celebrar com vocês, porque serão como se tivessem nascido no vosso meio. Doutra forma, nenhum incircunciso comerá do cordeiro. 49Esta lei deverá aplicar-se tanto aos naturais de Israel, como aos estrangeiros que estiverem a viver no vosso meio.”
50E todo o povo de Israel seguiu as instruções que o Senhor deu a Moisés e a Aarão. 51Naquele mesmo dia o Senhor trouxe para fora do Egito toda aquela grande multidão do povo de Israel.
