1Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.1.5 loins: Heb. thigh 6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7¶ And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. 9And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. 11Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.1.12 But…: Heb. And as they afflicted them, so they multiplied, etc 13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
15¶ And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: 16And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. 17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. 18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive? 19And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them. 20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses. 22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Inapi ang mga Israelita sa Egipto
1Ito ang mga anak na lalaki ni Jacob1:1 Jacob: sa Hebreo, Israel. na sumama sa kanya sa Egipto, kasama ang kanilang mga pamilya: 2sina Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Juda, 3Isacar, Zebulun, Benjamin, 4Dan, Naftali, Gad, at Asher. 5Si Jose ay matagal nang nasa Egipto. Ang bilang ng lahat ng lahi ni Jacob na sumama sa kanya sa Egipto ay 70.
6Dumating ang panahon na namatay si Jose at ang lahat ng kanyang kapatid, at lumipas na ang kanilang henerasyon 7pero mabilis na dumami ang lahi nila. Sa sobrang dami nila, nangalat sila sa buong lupain ng Egipto.
8Ngayon, nagkaroon ng bagong hari ang Egipto, na walang alam tungkol kay Jose. 9Sinabi niya sa kanyang mga mamamayan, “Tingnan ninyo. Masyado nang marami ang mga Israelita at nanganganib tayo. 10Dahil baka magkaroon ng digmaan at kumampi sila sa mga kaaway natin, at lumaban sa atin para makaalis sa ating bansa. Kaya maghanap tayo ng paraan para hindi na sila dumami pa.”
11Kaya naglagay sila ng mahihigpit na tao na mamamahala sa mga Israelita para pahirapan sila at pagtrabahuhin nang mabigat. Ipinagawa sa mga Israelita ang mga lungsod ng Pitom at Rameses para magkaroon dito ng mga bodega ang Faraon.1:11 Faraon: Ang ibig sabihin, hari ng Egipto. 12Pero habang patuloy silang pinahihirapan, lalo naman silang dumarami at nangangalat sa Egipto. Kaya lalong natakot ang mga taga-Egipto sa kanila. 13Dahil dito, lalo pa nilang pinagmalupitan ang mga Israelita. 14Wala silang awa sa mga ito. Pinahirapan nila ang mga Israelita sa paggawa ng mga tisa at pangsemento nito, at pinagtrabaho nang matindi sa bukid.
15Pagkatapos, sinabi ng hari ng Egipto sa mga Hebreong kumadrona na sina Shifra at Pua, 16“Kung magpapaanak kayo ng mga babaeng Hebreo, patayin ninyo kung lalaki ang anak, pero kung babae, huwag nʼyo nang patayin.” 17Pero dahil may takot sa Dios ang mga kumadrona, hindi nila sinunod ang iniutos ng hari. Sa halip, hinahayaan nilang mabuhay ang mga sanggol na lalaki.
18Kaya ipinatawag ng hari ng Egipto ang mga kumadrona at tinanong, “Bakit ninyo ito ginawa? Bakit hinahayaan ninyong mabuhay ang mga sanggol na lalaki?” 19Sumagot sila, “Ang mga babaeng Hebreo ay hindi tulad ng mga babaeng Egipcio; madali silang manganak at bago pa po kami dumating, nakapanganak na sila.”
20Kaya pinagpala ng Dios ang mga kumadrona at dumami pa nang dumami ang mga Israelita. 21At dahil sa iginagalang ng mga kumadrona ang Dios, binigyan sila ng Dios ng sarili nilang pamilya.
22Nang bandang huli, nag-utos ang Faraon sa lahat ng mamamayan niya, “Itapon ninyo sa Ilog ng Nilo ang lahat ng bagong panganak na sanggol na lalaki ng mga Israelita, pero pabayaan ninyong mabuhay ang mga batang babae.”
