17Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18¶ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.2.18 taken: Heb. laboured 19And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity. 20Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun. 21For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. ความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลินก็อนิจจัง
1ข้าพเจ้าคิดในใจว่า “งั้นมาเถอะ รื่นเริง สนุกสนาน บันเทิงใจเพื่อค้นหาสิ่งดีๆ” แต่ก็พบว่า นี่ก็อนิจจังอีก 2ข้าพเจ้ากล่าวว่า “การหัวเราะก็โง่เขลา ความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลินให้ประโยชน์อะไรบ้าง?” 3ข้าพเจ้าพยายามทำตัวให้เบิกบานด้วยเหล้าองุ่นและทำอะไรโง่ๆ แต่จิตใจก็ยังนำข้าพเจ้าไว้ด้วยสติปัญญา ข้าพเจ้าอยากจะดูว่าอะไรบ้างที่มีคุณค่าซึ่งมนุษย์ควรจะทำกันใต้ฟ้าสวรรค์ในชั่วอายุสั้นๆ ของตน
4ข้าพเจ้าดำเนินโครงการใหญ่ๆ คือ สร้างบ้านให้ตัวเองหลายหลัง ทำสวนองุ่นหลายแห่ง 5สร้างสวนหย่อนใจและปลูกผลไม้นานาชนิดในสวนเหล่านั้น 6ทำแหล่งเก็บน้ำ ส่งน้ำไปรดแมกไม้ที่กำลังงอกงาม 7ข้าพเจ้าซื้อทาสชายหญิงและมีทาสอื่นๆ อีกที่ถือกำเนิดในครัวเรือน ข้าพเจ้ามีฝูงสัตว์มากกว่าใครๆ ในเยรูซาเล็มซึ่งอยู่มาก่อนข้าพเจ้า 8ข้าพเจ้าสะสมเงินทองไว้สำหรับตัวเอง ทั้งยังได้รับเครื่องบรรณาการจากกษัตริย์และแว่นแคว้นต่างๆ ข้าพเจ้าจัดให้มีนักร้องชายหญิง และมีฮาเร็ม2:8 ในภาษาฮีบรูวลีนี้มีความหมายไม่ชัดเจนอันเป็นสิ่งถูกใจผู้ชาย 9ข้าพเจ้ากลายเป็นผู้ยิ่งใหญ่กว่าใครๆ ในเยรูซาเล็มก่อนหน้าข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้ามีสติปัญญาอยู่กับตัวในทุกสิ่งเหล่านี้
10ตาอยากดูอะไร ข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่ปฏิเสธตัวเอง
ใจอยากสนุกอย่างไร ข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่ห้าม
ข้าพเจ้าชื่นชมผลงานทั้งปวงของตน
และนี่เป็นรางวัลจากการลงทุนลงแรงของข้าพเจ้า
11ถึงกระนั้นเมื่อข้าพเจ้าสำรวจดูทุกสิ่งที่ทำไป
และที่ตรากตรำเพื่อให้ได้มา
ทุกสิ่งล้วนอนิจจัง เหมือนวิ่งไล่ตามลม
ไม่ก่อประโยชน์อะไรขึ้นมาภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์
สติปัญญาและความโฉดเขลาล้วนอนิจจัง
12แล้วข้าพเจ้าจึงหันไปพิจารณาสติปัญญา
กับความบ้าคลั่งและความโง่เขลา
ผู้ครองราชย์ต่อจากกษัตริย์จะทำอะไรได้
นอกจากสิ่งที่เคยทำกันมาก่อนแล้ว?
13ข้าพเจ้าเห็นว่าสติปัญญาดีกว่าความโฉดเขลา
เฉกเช่นแสงสว่างย่อมดีกว่าความมืด
14คนฉลาดมีตาอยู่ในสมอง
ขณะที่คนโฉดเขลาเดินไปในความมืด
แต่ข้าพเจ้าได้ประจักษ์ว่า
ชะตากรรมเดียวกันเกิดขึ้นแก่ทั้งสองฝ่าย
15ข้าพเจ้าจึงรำพึงในใจว่า
“ชะตากรรมที่เกิดกับคนโง่ก็จะเกิดกับเราด้วย
ฉะนั้นเราฉลาดไปจะได้อะไรขึ้นมา?”
ข้าพเจ้าบอกตัวเองว่า
“นี่ก็อนิจจังเหมือนกัน”
16เพราะคนฉลาดก็เป็นเช่นเดียวกับคนโง่
เขาจะไม่อยู่ในความทรงจำเนิ่นนาน
ในวันข้างหน้าก็ถูกลืมเลือนไปทั้งคู่
คนฉลาดก็ต้องตายเช่นเดียวกับคนโง่!
การตรากตรำก็อนิจจัง
17ฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงเกลียดชีวิต เพราะการงานที่ทำภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์เป็นความโศกสลดแก่ข้าพเจ้าล้วนแต่อนิจจัง เหมือนวิ่งไล่ตามลม 18ข้าพเจ้าเกลียดชังสิ่งทั้งปวงที่ตนเองตรากตรำทำไปภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ เพราะข้าพเจ้าจำต้องทิ้งสิ่งเหล่านั้นไว้ให้คนที่มาภายหลังข้าพเจ้า 19และใครเล่าจะรู้ว่าเขาจะเป็นคนโง่หรือฉลาด? ถึงกระนั้นเขาก็จะได้ครอบครองผลงานทั้งปวงซึ่งข้าพเจ้าได้ทุ่มเทหยาดเหงื่อแรงกายและความชำนาญลงไปภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ นี่ก็อนิจจังด้วยเช่นกัน 20ฉะนั้นจิตใจของข้าพเจ้าจึงท้อแท้สิ้นหวังต่อการงานอันตรากตรำทั้งปวงของตนภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์ 21เพราะมนุษย์อาจทำงานด้วยสติปัญญา ความรู้ และความเชี่ยวชาญ แต่แล้วก็ต้องละทิ้งทุกสิ่งที่เขาครอบครองให้แก่ใครบางคนซึ่งไม่ได้ลงมือลงแรง นี่ก็เช่นกัน อนิจจังและโชคร้ายเหลือเกิน 22คนเราได้ประโยชน์อะไรจากการดิ้นรนต่อสู้และการตรากตรำคร่ำเครียดทั้งปวงภายใต้ดวงอาทิตย์? 23ตลอดชีวิตของเขา งานก็เป็นความเจ็บปวดและความทุกข์โศก แม้ยามค่ำคืนจิตใจก็ไม่สงบสุข นี่ก็อนิจจัง
24คนเราไม่อาจทำอะไรได้ดีไปกว่ากินดื่มและหาความอิ่มใจในงานของตน ข้าพเจ้าเห็นว่าสิ่งนี้ก็มาจากพระหัตถ์ของพระเจ้าด้วย 25เพราะปราศจากพระองค์แล้ว ใครเล่าจะกินหรือพบความชื่นชมยินดีได้? 26พระเจ้าประทานสติปัญญา ความรู้ และความสุขแก่ผู้ที่พระองค์พอพระทัย แต่สำหรับคนบาป พระองค์ทรงมอบงานที่เขาต้องรวบรวมและสะสมทรัพย์สมบัติไว้เพื่อจะมอบให้บุคคลที่พระองค์พอพระทัย นี่ก็อนิจจัง เหมือนวิ่งไล่ตามลม
