This is also vanity. 20Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun. 21For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. 24¶ There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. 楽しみはむなしい
1-2それで私は、「愉快に生きよう。思う存分楽しむのだ」と思いました。ところが、こうした生き方も実にむなしいことがわかりました。一日中笑っているのは愚かなことです。それが何の得になるのでしょう。
3いろいろ試してみてから、私は知恵を探求し続ける一方で、酒を飲んで元気になろうと思いました。次に、もう一度考えを変えて、愚かな者になりきることにしました。多くの人が経験する幸福を味わってみようと思ったのです。
4-6今度は、大規模な事業に乗り出して、仕事からくる充実感を得ようとしました。邸宅を建て、ぶどう園、庭園、公園、それに果樹園まで造り、良い作物を実らせるために貯水池まで造ってみたのです。
7-8次に、男女の奴隷を買いました。私の家で生まれた奴隷たちもいます。ほかに家畜の群れも飼ってみましたが、その数は以前のどの王よりも多かったのです。さらに、多くの州や国から、税金として金銀をかき集めました。また文化的な活動として、混声コーラス・グループやオーケストラを組織しました。そのうえ私には、大ぜいの美しいそばめがいたのです。
9こうして、歴代のエルサレムの王もしなかったような、あらゆることをやってみました。両眼をしっかり見開いて、これらのものの価値を見極めようとしたのです。 10欲しいものは何でも手に入れ、したい放題の楽しみをしてみました。つらい仕事にも大きな喜びがあることを知りました。この喜びこそ、実に、あらゆる労働に共通した報酬なのです。
知恵と愚かさはむなしい
11しかし、してきたことを振り返ってみると、どれもこれも役に立たないことばかりで、風を追うようなものでした。これこそ価値があると言えるものなど、どこにもありませんでした。
12そこで、知恵と無知の価値を比較してみることにしました。おそらくだれでも、同じ結論に達するでしょう。 13-14それは、こういうことです。光が闇にまさっているように、知恵は無知よりはるかに価値があります。賢い人は先々を正しく判断しますが、愚かな人は先のことがわかりません。ところが私は、知恵のある人にも知恵の足りない人にも共通点があることに気づきました。 15知恵の足りない人が死ぬように、いずれこの私も死ぬということです。それなら、知恵をつけたところで、いったい何の益があるというのでしょう。私は、知恵をつけることでさえむなしいものだと悟ったのです。 16賢い人も愚かな人も死ぬのです。時がたてば、両者とも、すっかり忘れられてしまいます。 17私はここまでわかると、生きているのがいやになりました。人生は不条理きわまりないからです。何もかもむなしく、風を追うようなものです。
労苦はむなしい
18一生懸命に築き上げたものが他者のものになると思うと、いやになってきます。 19そればかりか、跡取り息子が愚か者か賢い者か、だれにわかるでしょう。それでも、私の財産はすべて、息子のものになるのです。なんと気分がめいることではありませんか。
20-23こうして、満足感を与えてくれると考えていた労苦も愚かしく思われ、見切りをつけました。生涯をかけて知恵や知識や技術を追求しても、せっかく手に入れたものを全部、何もしなかった者に譲るはめになるのです。そんな者が、私が努力して得たものを受け継ぐのです。むなしいだけでなく、不公平です。どれほど必死に働いても何の役にも立ちません。あるものといえば、悲しみと悩みに押しつぶされそうな、心の休まらない日々と眠れない夜です。全くむなしい話ではありませんか。
24-26そこで私は、食べたり飲んだりすることと、労働を楽しむこと以外に生きがいはない、と判断しました。しかも、このような楽しみさえ神の御手から来るとわかったのです。というのも、神の世話にならなければ、だれも食べたり楽しんだりすることはできないからです。神は、お心にかなった者に知恵、知識、喜びを与えます。ところが神は、罪人が金持ちになると、その財産を取り上げ、お心にかなった者に分け与えるのです。ここにも、風を追うようなむなしさの一例があります。
