8Cel ce sapă o groapă, va cădea în ea,

și cine crapă lemne, se află în pericol din cauza lor.
10Dacă fierul securii este tocit
și omul nu‑i ascute lama,
trebuie să‑ți intensifici eforturile!
De aceea la câștig se ajunge prin înțelepciune!
11Dacă șarpele mușcă, fără să fie descântat,
stăpânul lui nu are niciun câștig.
12Cuvintele gurii celui înțelept sunt plăcute12 Sau: îl fac să câștige bunăvoință.,
dar buzele celui nesăbuit îl înghit.
13Cuvintele de început ale gurii lui sunt prostești,
iar sfârșitul vorbirii lui este nebunie răutăcioasă.
14Și totuși, prostul spune o mulțime de vorbe.
Omul nu știe ce se va întâmpla;
cine îi poate spune ce va fi după el?
15Osteneala nesăbuiților îl obosește
pe cel ce nu cunoaște drumul spre cetate.

17Ferice de tine, țară, al cărei rege este de viță nobilă
și ai cărei prinți dau ospețe la vremea potrivită,
ca să se întărească, și nu să se îmbete!
18Din cauza leneviei se lasă grinda,
iar, când mâinile sunt leneșe, plouă în casă.
19Pâinea se face pentru petrecere,
și vinul înveselește viața,
dar argintul răspunde la toate.
20Nu‑l blestema pe rege nici chiar în mintea ta,
nu‑l blestema pe cel înstărit nici chiar în odaia ta de culcare,
căci s‑ar putea ca pasărea cerului să‑ți ducă vorba
și un sol înaripat să‑ți dea pe față spusele.
