1死んだハエは香水さえ臭くし、
ほんの少しの失敗は
多くの知恵と名誉をだいなしにする。
2知恵ある者は正しい道に足を向け、
愚か者は悪の道に向かう。
3どこを歩くかで、
その人が賢いのか愚かなのかがわかる。
4上司にしかられても、職場を放棄してはいけません。
冷静な態度は、相手の不きげんをなだめます。
5世の中の移り変わりを見ていると、
もう一つの悪が目についた。
王や支配者たちの嘆かわしい有様だ。
6愚か者に大きな権威が与えられているのに、
富む者に当然と思える社会的地位さえ
与えられていないことがある。
7また、召使が馬にまたがり、
君主が召使のように歩いている姿を見た。
8-9井戸を掘ると中に落ち、
古い石垣を壊すと蛇にかまれる。
採石場で働いていると落石に会い、
伐採場では斧を振り上げるたびに危険にさらされる。
10斧の切れ味が悪くなると、余計な力がいる。
そんなときには刃を研ぐことだ。
11馬が盗まれてから馬小屋に鍵をかけても、
もう遅い。
12-13知恵あることばは心地よいが、
愚か者のおしゃべりは身を滅ぼします。
愚か者の話は前置きがばかげ、
結論も常軌を逸している。
14愚か者は将来について知っているふりをして、
事細かに話して聞かせる。
しかし、これから起こることは、
だれにもわからない。
15愚か者は大した仕事でもないのにうろたえ、
ささいなことにも力を出せない。
16-17王が幼く、指導者たちが朝から酔っている国は、
とんでもない目に会う。
王が名門の出で、
指導者たちが勤勉を第一と心がけていて、
これからの仕事のための英気を養うときにだけ
宴会を開いている国は幸せです。
18怠けていると、天井から雨がもり、
梁が落ちる。
19祝宴は笑いを、ぶどう酒は幸福感を、
金銭はすべてのものをあたえる。
20たとえ心の中でも、
王をのろってはいけない。
金持ちをのろってもいけない。
小鳥が彼らに、
あなたがどんなことを言ったかを告げるからだ。
