6¶ I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.5.6 bondage: Heb. servants 7Thou shalt have none other gods before me. 8Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: 9Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, 10And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. 11Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 12Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. 13Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: 14But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. 15And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
16¶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 17Thou shalt not kill. 18Neither shalt thou commit adultery. 19Neither shalt thou steal. 20Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour. 21Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
22¶ These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
23And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; 24And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth. 25Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.5.25 hear: Heb. add to hear 26For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it. 28And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken. 29O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! 30Go say to them, Get you into your tents again. 31But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it. 32Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

Die Zehn Gebote
(2. Mose 20,1‒17)
1Mose rief das ganze Volk zusammen und sagte:
Hört mir zu, ihr Israeliten! Ich gebe euch jetzt die Gebote und Weisungen des Herrn. Prägt sie euch ein und lebt nach ihnen! 2Der Herr, unser Gott, hat am Berg Horeb einen Bund mit uns geschlossen. 3Er galt nicht unseren Vorfahren, sondern uns, die wir heute leben. 4Der Herr ist euch am Horeb begegnet und hat aus dem Feuer zu euch persönlich gesprochen. 5Ich stand zwischen ihm und euch, um euch seine Worte weiterzugeben. Denn ihr seid aus Angst vor dem Feuer nicht selbst auf den Berg gestiegen. Der Herr sprach:
6»Ich bin der Herr, dein Gott; ich habe dich aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten befreit. 7Du sollst außer mir keine anderen Götter verehren! 8Fertige dir keine Götzenstatue an, auch kein Abbild von irgendetwas am Himmel, auf der Erde oder im Meer5,8 Wörtlich: im Wasser unter der Erde.. 9Wirf dich nicht vor solchen Götterfiguren nieder, bring ihnen keine Opfer dar! Denn ich bin der Herr, dein Gott. Ich dulde keinen neben mir! Wer mich verachtet, den werde ich bestrafen. Sogar seine Kinder, Enkel und Urenkel werden die Folgen spüren! 10Doch denen, die mich lieben und sich an meine Gebote halten, bin ich gnädig. Sie und ihre Nachkommen werden meine Liebe über Tausende von Generationen erfahren.
11Du sollst meinen Namen nicht missbrauchen, denn ich bin der Herr, dein Gott! Ich lasse keinen ungestraft, der das tut!
12Achte den Sabbat als einen Tag, der mir allein geweiht ist! So habe ich es dir befohlen. 13Sechs Tage sollst du deine Arbeit verrichten, 14aber der siebte Tag ist ein Ruhetag, der mir, dem Herrn, deinem Gott, gehört. An diesem Tag sollst du nicht arbeiten, weder du noch deine Kinder, weder dein Knecht noch deine Magd, weder dein Rind noch dein Esel noch ein anderes deiner Tiere, auch nicht der Fremde, der bei dir lebt. Dein Knecht und deine Magd sollen genauso ausruhen wie du. 15Vergiss nicht, dass auch du einmal Sklave in Ägypten warst und dass ich, der Herr, dein Gott, dich von dort mit starker Hand und großer Macht befreit habe. Deshalb habe ich dir befohlen, den Sabbat als einen Tag zu achten, der mir gehört.
16Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter! Das befehle ich, der Herr, dein Gott. Dann wird es dir gut gehen, und du wirst lange in dem Land leben, das ich dir gebe.
17Du sollst nicht töten!
18Du sollst nicht die Ehe brechen!
19Du sollst nicht stehlen!
20Sag nichts Unwahres über deinen Mitmenschen!5,20 Wörtlich: Sag nicht als falscher Zeuge gegen deinen Mitmenschen aus!
21Du sollst nicht die Frau eines anderen Mannes begehren!
Begehre auch nichts von dem, was deinem Mitmenschen gehört: weder sein Haus noch sein Feld, seinen Knecht oder seine Magd, Rinder, Esel oder irgendetwas anderes, was ihm gehört.«
22Diese Worte sprach der Herr am Berg Horeb zu euch, und er fügte nichts mehr hinzu. Euer ganzes Volk hat dort seine gewaltige Stimme aus dem Feuer und aus der dunklen Wolke gehört. Anschließend schrieb er die Gebote auf zwei Steintafeln und gab sie mir.
Israel will Gott gehorchen
(2. Mose 20,18‒21)
23Als ihr Gottes Stimme aus der dunklen Wolke hörtet und den Berg in Flammen saht, kamen die Oberhäupter eurer Stämme und Sippen zu mir 24und sagten: »Der Herr, unser Gott, hat uns seine Macht und Herrlichkeit gezeigt! Heute haben wir seine Stimme aus dem Feuer gehört und erlebt, dass Menschen nicht sterben müssen, wenn Gott mit ihnen redet. 25Trotzdem haben wir Angst, dass uns dieses gewaltige Feuer umbringt! Wenn wir weiter die Stimme des Herrn, unseres Gottes, hören, werden wir mit Sicherheit umkommen! 26Hat schon jemals ein Mensch den lebendigen Gott aus einem Feuer reden hören wie wir und ist am Leben geblieben? 27Darum geh du allein hin und höre, was der Herr, unser Gott, uns zu sagen hat; teil uns dann alles mit! Wir werden uns genau daran halten.«
28Der Herr hörte eure Bitte und sprach zu mir: »Was die Israeliten vorschlagen, ist gut. 29Mögen sie immer so große Ehrfurcht vor mir haben und stets bereit sein, nach meinen Geboten zu leben! Dann wird es ihnen und ihren Nachkommen für alle Zeiten gut gehen. 30Geh und sag ihnen, sie sollen zu ihren Zelten zurückkehren. 31Du aber bleib hier bei mir! Ich will dir alle Gebote, Weisungen und Ordnungen mitteilen, und du sollst sie dann den Israeliten erklären. Sie sollen sich danach richten, wenn sie in dem Land leben, das ich ihnen schenken will.«
32Darum haltet euch an die Gebote des Herrn, eures Gottes, und weicht in keiner Hinsicht davon ab! 33Folgt immer dem Weg, den der Herr, euer Gott, euch gewiesen hat! Dann werdet ihr am Leben bleiben. Es wird euch gut gehen, und ihr werdet lange in eurem Land wohnen können.
