1If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him: 2Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain: 3And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke; 4And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer’s neck there in the valley: 5And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:21.5 word: Heb. mouth 6And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: 7And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. 8Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel’s charge. 10¶ When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive, 11And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife; 12Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;21.12 pare: or, suffer to grow: Heb. make, or, dress 13And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. 14And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.
15¶ If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: 16Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: 17But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.21.17 that…: Heb. that is found with him
18¶ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 19Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 20And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
22¶ And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: 23His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.21.23 accursed…: Heb. the curse of God
Gedragsregels
1‘Als—eenmaal aangekomen in het beloofde land—ergens in het veld een vermoorde man wordt gevonden en niemand heeft de moordenaar gezien, 2moeten de leiders en rechters bepalen welke stad het dichtst bij de plek van de misdaad ligt. 3Daarna zullen de leiders van die stad een jonge koe nemen die nog nooit een juk heeft gedragen, en haar naar een dal brengen waar stromend water is. 4Een dal dat niet is geploegd of ingezaaid. In dat dal moeten zij de koe de nek breken.
5Daarna zullen de priesters erbij komen, want de Here, uw God, heeft hen gekozen om Hem te dienen, zijn zegeningen uit te spreken en te oordelen over rechtzaken en straffen. 6De leiders van de stad zullen daarna hun handen wassen boven de jonge koe 7en zeggen: “Onze handen hebben dit bloed niet vergoten, onze ogen hebben deze misdaad niet zien gebeuren. 8Och Here, vergeef uw volk Israël dat U hebt verlost. Beschuldig het niet van de moord op een onschuldige man.” 9Zo zult u de schuld uit uw midden wegdoen door deze aanwijzingen van de Here uit te voeren.
10Als u oorlog voert en de Here, uw God, geeft de vijand aan u over 11en u ziet onder de gevangenen een mooie vrouw die u wel als vrouw zou willen hebben, 12neem haar dan mee naar huis. Daar moet zij haar hoofdhaar afscheren, haar nagels knippen 13en andere kleren aantrekken. De kleren die zij aanhad toen zij gevangen werd genomen, moet zij uittrekken. Een volle maand zal zij daarna in uw huis rouwen om haar vader en moeder. Daarna mag u met haar slapen, zodat zij uw vrouw wordt. 14Als zij u echter niet bevalt, moet u haar vrijlaten, u mag haar niet behandelen of verkopen als een slaaf, want u hebt haar vernederd.
15Als een man twee vrouwen heeft, van wie hij de ene liefheeft en de ander haat, en beiden hebben hem kinderen gegeven en de vrouw die hij haat is de moeder van zijn oudste zoon, 16dan mag hij zijn jongste zoon (de zoon van de vrouw van wie hij houdt) niet tot stamhouder maken. 17Hij moet zijn oudste zoon erkennen als stamhouder en hem een dubbel erfdeel geven. Die is immers als eerste geboren en heeft dus ook de rechten van de eerstgeboren zoon, ook al is hij de zoon van de gehate vrouw.
18Als een man een koppige en opstandige zoon heeft, die ondanks strafmaatregelen weigert zijn ouders te gehoorzamen, 19moeten zijn ouders hem bij de leiders van de stad brengen en zeggen: 20“Deze zoon van ons is koppig en opstandig. Hij wil ons niet gehoorzamen, hij gooit met geld en drinkt te veel!” 21Dan zullen de mannen van zijn stad hem door steniging ter dood brengen. Op die manier moet u dit kwaad uit uw midden wegdoen en heel Israël zal horen wat is gebeurd en diep ontzag hebben voor de Here.
22Als een man een misdaad heeft gepleegd waarop de doodstraf staat, ter dood is gebracht en opgehangen, 23mag zijn lichaam daar niet de hele nacht blijven hangen. U moet hem nog diezelfde dag begraven, want iemand die aan een paal is opgehangen, is door God vervloekt. U mag het land dat de Here, uw God, u als erfdeel heeft gegeven, niet verontreinigen.’
