1If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. 5And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. 6¶ If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; 7Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; 8Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: 9But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. 10And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.13.10 bondage: Heb. bondmen 11And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
12¶ If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying, 13Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;13.13 the children…: or, naughty men 14Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you; 15Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword. 16And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again. 17And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;13.17 cursed: or, devoted 18When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.
Pedepsirea celor ce instigă la idolatrie
1Dacă se va ridica în mijlocul tău un profet sau un visător de vise, iar acesta îți va da un semn sau o minune, 2dacă se va împlini semnul sau minunea despre care ți‑a vorbit el, zicând: «Să mergem după alți dumnezei», – pe care tu nu‑i cunoști –, «și să le slujim!», 3să nu asculți de cuvintele acelui profet sau visător de vise, fiindcă Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, vă pune la încercare ca să știe dacă Îl iubiți pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, din toată inima voastră și din tot sufletul vostru. 4Voi să umblați după Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, de El să vă temeți, poruncile Lui să le păziți, de glasul Lui să ascultați, Lui să‑I slujiți și de El să vă alipiți. 5Acel profet sau visător de vise să fie omorât, căci a vorbit de apostazie împotriva Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru, Care v‑a scos din țara Egiptului și te‑a răscumpărat din casa robilor, și a vrut să te abată de la calea pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ți‑a poruncit să mergi. Să nimicești astfel răul din mijlocul tău.
6Dacă fratele tău, fiul mamei tale, sau fiul tău sau fiica ta sau soția de la pieptul tău, sau prietenul tău, care este precum sufletul tău, te va stârni în secret, zicând: «Să mergem și să slujim altor dumnezei», – pe care nu i‑ai cunoscut nici tu și nici părinții tăi –, 7dintre dumnezeii popoarelor care sunt în jurul vostru, aproape de tine sau departe de tine, de la o margine a pământului până la cealaltă, 8să nu încuviințezi și să nu‑l asculți. Ochii tăi să nu se uite cu milă la el și să nu‑l cruți sau să‑l ascunzi, 9ci să‑l omori. Tu să fii primul care se ridică împotriva lui ca să‑l omoare și apoi întregul popor. 10Să‑l omori cu pietre, deoarece a căutat să te abată de la Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Care te‑a scos din țara Egiptului, din casa robilor. 11Atunci tot Israelul va auzi și se va teme și nimeni nu va mai face un astfel de rău în mijlocul tău.
12Dacă într‑una dintre cetățile tale, pe care Domnul Dumnezeul tău ți le dă ca să locuiești acolo, vei auzi vorbindu‑se: 13«Niște oameni, fii ai lui Belial13 Sensul literal al termenului Belial este fără folos(ință), fără utilitate (bun de nimic). În sens lărgit, termenul se poate traduce cu ticălos, netrebnic. Vezi și nota din 2 Cor. 6:15., au ieșit din mijlocul tău și i‑au înșelat pe locuitorii cetății lor, zicând: ‘Să mergem și să slujim altor dumnezei!’», – pe care voi nu‑i cunoașteți –, 14atunci să cercetezi, să cauți și să întrebi cu atenție. Iar dacă este adevărat și se confirmă zvonul că s‑a săvârșit urâciunea aceasta în mijlocul tău, 15atunci să‑i treci neapărat prin ascuțișul sabiei pe locuitorii cetății. Nimicește‑o15, 17 Vezi nota de la 2:34. prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe ea și tot ce este în ea, inclusiv animalele ei. 16Să aduni toată prada în mijlocul pieței, să arzi în foc cetatea în întregime, împreună cu toată prada, înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, și să rămână o ruină pentru totdeauna; niciodată să nu mai fie reconstruită. 17Nimic din lucrurile date spre nimicire să nu se lipească de mâinile tale pentru ca Domnul să Se întoarcă din înverșunarea mâniei Lui. El Își va arăta mila și îndurarea față de tine și te va înmulți, așa cum a jurat părinților tăi, 18dacă vei asculta de glasul Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, păzind toate poruncile Lui, pe care eu ți le dau astăzi și înfăptuind ce este drept în ochii Domnului, Dumnezeul tău.
