7¶ Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. 8And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: 9And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10¶ Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. 11For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. 12Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: 13But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.7.13 chapel: or, sanctuary7.13 king’s court: Heb. house of the kingdom

16¶ Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. 17Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Het visioen van het paslood
1Het volgende liet de Oppermachtige Here mij in een visioen zien: Hij was bezig een enorme zwerm sprinkhanen te vormen die na de eerste oogst, die als belasting naar de koning ging, alle weer opkomende gewassen moest verwoesten. 2Zij vraten elk sprietje op. Toen zei ik: ‘Here God, vergeef uw volk toch alstublieft! Stuur deze plaag niet! Als U zich tegen Israël keert, blijft niemand meer op de been. Israël is maar zo klein!’ 3De Here zag er inderdaad vanaf en liet het visioen geen werkelijkheid worden. ‘Het zal niet gebeuren,’ zei Hij tegen mij.
4Toen liet de Oppermachtige Here mij een groot vuur zien dat Hij had gereedgemaakt om hen te straffen, dit vuur had alle wateren laten opdrogen en was nu bezig het hele land te vernietigen. 5Ik zei toen: ‘Och, Oppermachtige Here, doe dit toch alstublieft niet. Wie kan standhouden als U zich tegen hen keert? Israël is maar zoʼn klein volk!’ 6Toen liet de Here ook dit plan varen en zei: ‘Ook dit zal niet gebeuren.’
7Daarna toonde Hij mij het volgende: de Here stond bij een muur die met behulp van een paslood was gebouwd en controleerde het bouwsel met het paslood om te zien of hij wel recht was. 8De Here zei tegen mij: ‘Amos, wat ziet u?’ Ik antwoordde: ‘Een paslood.’ Hij antwoordde: ‘Ik zal mijn volk Israël controleren met een paslood. Ik zal de straf niet langer uitstellen. 9De afgodenaltaren en tempels van Israël zullen verwoest worden en het koningshuis van Jerobeam zal Ik met het zwaard uitroeien.’
10Maar toen de priester Amazia uit Betel de woorden van Amos hoorde, stuurde hij snel de volgende boodschap naar koning Jerobeam: ‘Amos is een landverrader en beraamt een aanslag op uw leven. Dat kunnen we niet toelaten. Het hele land zal in opstand komen. 11Want Amos zegt dat u zult worden gedood en dat het hele volk Israël als balling en slaaf naar een ver land zal worden weggevoerd.’ 12Vervolgens ging Amazia naar Amos en zei: ‘Maak dat je hier wegkomt, profeet! Vlucht maar naar Juda en ga daar maar profeteren! 13Val ons hier niet lastig met je visioenen, in elk geval niet hier in de hoofdstad, waar het heiligdom van de koning staat!’ 14Maar Amos antwoordde: ‘Ik ben niet echt een van de profeten. Ik kom ook niet uit een profetenfamilie. Ik ben gewoon een herder en fruitplukker. 15Maar de Here haalde mij weg uit het herdersbestaan en zei: “U moet gaan profeteren voor mijn volk Israël.” 16Luister daarom nu naar deze boodschap van de Here aan u. U zegt: “Profeteer niet tegen Israël.” 17Het antwoord van de Here daarop is: “Vanwege uw overspel zal uw vrouw een prostituee worden in deze stad, zullen uw zonen en dochters worden gedood en zal uw land worden verdeeld. U zult zelf in een heidens land op onreine bodem sterven en de inwoners van Israël zullen zonder enige twijfel slaven in ballingschap worden, ver van hun vaderland.” ’
