1Then said the high priest, Are these things so? 2And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, 3And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. 4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. 5And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. 6And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years. 7And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place. 8And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. 9And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, 10And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. 11Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance. 12But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 13And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh. 14Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls. 15So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers, 16And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem. 17But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, 18Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph. 19The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. 20In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months: 21And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel. 24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian: 25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not. 26And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? 27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? 28Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday? 29Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons. 30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. 31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. 33Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground. 34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. 35This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. 36He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37¶ This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. 38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us: 39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt, 40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? 43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. 44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen. 45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David; 46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. 47But Solomon built him an house. 48Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, 49Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? 50Hath not my hand made all these things?
51¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. 52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: 53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54¶ When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul. 59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
1Le grand-prêtre lui demanda : Reconnais-tu les faits qui te sont reprochés ?
2Etienne dit alors :
Chers frères et pères de notre peuple, écoutez-moi : le Dieu glorieux apparut jadis à notre ancêtre Abraham, quand il vivait encore en Mésopotamie, avant de s’établir à Harân, 3et il lui dit : Quitte ton pays et ta parenté, et va dans le pays que je t’indiquerai7.3 Gn 12.1.. 4C’est ainsi qu’Abraham quitta la Chaldée et vint se fixer à Harân. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit venir dans le pays où vous habitez actuellement. 5Pourtant, il ne lui donna ici aucune propriété, pas même un mètre carré de terre. Mais il lui promit de lui donner le pays tout entier, à lui et à ses descendants après lui, alors qu’à cette époque il n’avait pas encore d’enfant7.5 Gn 17.8..
6Et Dieu lui parla ainsi :
Tes descendants séjourneront dans une terre étrangère, ils y seront réduits en esclavage et on les maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans. 7Mais, ajouta Dieu, j’exécuterai mon jugement contre la nation qui en aura fait ses esclaves. Après cela, ils quitteront le pays étranger et viendront ici même, dans ce pays, pour me rendre un culte7.7 Gn 15.13-14..
8Puis Dieu conclut son alliance avec Abraham et lui en donna pour signe la circoncision. Ainsi il eut pour fils Isaac et le circoncit huit jours après sa naissance. Isaac fit de même pour son fils Jacob, et celui-ci, à son tour, pour ses fils, les douze ancêtres de nos tribus7.8 Voir note 2.29..
9Or, les fils de Jacob, poussés par la jalousie, vendirent leur frère Joseph, pour qu’il fût emmené comme esclave en Egypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui. 10Il le délivra de toutes ses épreuves et, dans sa grâce, il lui donna la sagesse nécessaire devant le pharaon, roi d’Egypte, si bien qu’il fut nommé gouverneur du pays et de toute la maison royale. 11Alors survint une grande famine dans toute l’Egypte et en Canaan. Ce fut un temps de grande misère. Nos ancêtres ne trouvaient plus de quoi manger.
12Quand Jacob apprit qu’il y avait du blé en Egypte, il y envoya une première fois ses fils, nos ancêtres. 13Lors de leur second voyage en Egypte, Joseph se fit reconnaître par ses frères, et le pharaon apprit quelle était l’origine de Joseph. 14Puis Joseph envoya chercher son père Jacob et toute sa parenté qui comprenait soixante-quinze personnes. 15Jacob descendit en Egypte ; il y finit ses jours, de même que nos ancêtres. 16Leurs corps furent ramenés à Sichem, et déposés dans le tombeau qu’Abraham avait acheté pour une certaine somme d’argent aux fils d’Hamor à Sichem. 17Le moment approchait où Dieu allait accomplir la promesse qu’il avait faite à Abraham : notre peuple s’était multiplié et les Israélites étaient devenus de plus en plus nombreux en Egypte. 18C’est alors qu’un nouveau roi, qui n’avait pas connu Joseph, monta sur le trône d’Egypte7.18 Ex 1.8.. 19Il exploita notre peuple de manière perfide et opprima nos ancêtres, jusqu’à les obliger à abandonner leurs nouveau-nés pour qu’ils ne survivent pas.
20A cette époque naquit Moïse, qui avait la faveur de Dieu7.20 Autre traduction : qui était extrêmement beau.. Pendant trois mois, il fut élevé dans la maison de son père. 21Lorsque finalement ses parents durent l’abandonner, il fut recueilli par la fille du pharaon qui l’éleva comme son propre fils. 22C’est ainsi que Moïse fut instruit dans toute la science des Egyptiens et qu’il devint un homme dont la parole et les actions avaient des effets remarquables.
23A l’âge de quarante ans, il voulut venir en aide à ses frères, les Israélites. 24Voyant que l’on maltraitait l’un d’eux, il prit sa défense, et, pour le venger, tua l’Egyptien qui le maltraitait. 25Il pensait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu voulait se servir de lui pour les libérer. Mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
26Le lendemain, il vit deux d’entre eux se battre. Il s’interposa et essaya de réconcilier les adversaires.
– Mes amis, leur dit-il, vous êtes des frères ! Pourquoi, alors, vous faites-vous du mal ?
27Mais celui qui maltraitait son compagnon le repoussa en disant : Qui t’a établi chef et juge sur nous ? 28Voudrais-tu par hasard aussi me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l’Egyptien7.28 Ex 2.14.?
29Quand Moïse entendit cela, il prit la fuite et alla vivre dans le pays de Madian où il eut deux fils.
30Quarante années plus tard, un ange lui apparut dans le désert du mont Sinaï, au milieu de la flamme d’un buisson en feu7.30 Ex 3.2.. 31Saisi d’étonnement à cette vision, Moïse s’approchait pour le considérer de plus près, quand la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre : 32Je suis le Dieu de tes ancêtres, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob7.32 Ex 3.6..
Tout tremblant, Moïse n’osait pas lever les yeux. 33Le Seigneur lui dit :
Ote tes sandales, car le lieu où tu te tiens est un lieu saint7.33 Ex 3.5.. 34J’ai vu la souffrance de mon peuple en Egypte. J’ai entendu ses gémissements et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Et maintenant, viens : je t’envoie en Egypte7.34 Ex 3.7, 8, 10..
35Ainsi ce Moïse que ses frères avaient repoussé en lui disant : Qui t’a établi chef et juge sur nous7.35 Ex 2.14.?, c’est lui que Dieu a envoyé comme chef et libérateur du peuple avec l’aide de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson. 36C’est lui qui les fit sortir d’Egypte en accomplissant des prodiges et des signes miraculeux dans ce pays, puis lors de la traversée de la mer Rouge7.36 Expression traduite du grec, désignant la mer des Roseaux. et, pendant quarante ans, dans le désert.
37Ce fut encore lui qui dit aux Israélites : Dieu suscitera pour vous, du milieu de vos compatriotes, un prophète qui sera comme moi7.37 Dt 18.15..
38Lorsque le peuple était rassemblé au désert, c’est encore lui qui servit d’intermédiaire entre l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï et nos ancêtres. Il reçut de Dieu des paroles de vie pour nous les transmettre.
39Nos ancêtres refusèrent de lui obéir. Bien plus : ils le repoussèrent et se laissèrent gagner par le désir de retourner en Egypte. 40Ils vinrent demander à Aaron : Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent à notre tête, car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir d’Egypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé7.40 Ex 32.1, 23..
41Ils façonnèrent alors un veau, ils offrirent un sacrifice à cette idole, et ils célébrèrent de joyeuses fêtes en l’honneur de ce qu’ils avaient fabriqué de leurs mains.
42Dieu se détourna d’eux et les abandonna à l’idolâtrie et au culte des astres du ciel. C’est bien ce qui est écrit dans le livre des prophètes :
Est-ce à moi que vous avez présenté ╵des sacrifices et des offrandes,
pendant les quarante ans ╵de votre séjour au désert, ╵vous, peuple d’Israël ?
43Non, vous avez porté ╵la tente de Molok7.43 Molok: divinité adorée par les Ammonites. Rompha: ancienne divinité païenne représentant la planète Saturne.
et l’astre de votre dieu Rompha,
idoles que vous avez fabriquées ╵pour vous prosterner devant elles.

44Au désert, nos ancêtres avaient avec eux la tente qui contenait le traité de l’alliance et que Dieu avait ordonné à Moïse de construire d’après le modèle qu’il lui avait montré. 45Cette tente a été confiée à la génération suivante de nos ancêtres. Ils l’emmenèrent avec eux quand ils conquirent, sous la conduite de Josué, le pays où se trouvaient les peuplades que Dieu chassa devant eux. Elle y demeura jusqu’au temps de David.
46Celui-ci obtint la faveur de Dieu et demanda de pouvoir donner une demeure au Dieu de Jacob. 47Mais ce fut Salomon qui bâtit le Temple. 48Cependant, le Dieu très-haut n’habite pas dans des édifices construits par des mains humaines. C’est ce que dit le prophète :
49Mon trône, c’est le ciel,
et mon marchepied, c’est la terre.
Quelle est donc la maison ╵que vous me bâtirez, ╵dit le Seigneur,
quelle demeure ╵pour mon lieu de repos ?
50Toutes ces choses, ╵n’est-ce pas moi qui les ai faites7.50 Es 66.1-2.?
51O vous hommes obstinés qui, comme de véritables incirconcis, gardez votre cœur et vos oreilles fermés, vous résistez toujours à l’Esprit Saint ! 52Vous ressemblez bien à vos ancêtres ! Y a-t-il un seul prophète que vos ancêtres n’aient pas persécuté ? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient la venue du seul Juste. Et vous, maintenant, vous l’avez trahi et assassiné ! 53Oui, vous avez bien reçu la Loi de Dieu par l’intermédiaire des anges, mais vous ne l’avez jamais observée…
L’exécution d’Etienne
54A ces mots, ceux qui siégeaient au Grand-Conseil devinrent fous de rage : ils grinçaient des dents contre Etienne. 55Mais lui, rempli du Saint-Esprit, leva les yeux au ciel et vit la gloire de Dieu, et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu. Alors, il s’écria : 56Ecoutez : je vois le ciel ouvert et le Fils de l’homme debout à la droite de Dieu.
57A ces mots, ils se mirent à vociférer et à se boucher les oreilles. D’un même élan, ils se ruèrent sur lui, 58le traînèrent hors de la ville et le lapidèrent. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59Pendant qu’ils jetaient des pierres sur lui, Etienne priait ainsi : Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit !
60Puis il tomba à genoux et, de toutes ses forces, lança un dernier cri : Seigneur, ne leur demande pas compte de ce péché !
Après avoir dit ces mots, il expira.
