1And it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara: 2And finding a ship sailing over unto Phenicia, we went aboard, and set forth. 3Now when we had discovered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to unlade her burden. 4And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. 5And when we had accomplished those days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed. 6And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again. 7And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day. 8And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Cæsarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. 9And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. 10And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judæa a certain prophet, named Agabus. 11And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. 12And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.
15And after those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem. 16There went with us also certain of the disciples of Cæsarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge. 17And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly. 18And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present. 19And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry. 20And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law: 21And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs. 22What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. 23Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them; 24Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law. 25As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication. 26Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them.
27And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, 28Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place. 29(For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. 31And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. 33Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done. 34And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle. 35And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people. 36For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him. 37And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek? 38Art not thou that Egyptian, which before these days madest an uproar, and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers? 39But Paul said, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I beseech thee, suffer me to speak unto the people. 40And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,

1Na het moeilijke afscheid van de christenleiders uit Efeze, kozen wij zee en zeilden in één ruk naar het eiland Kos. De volgende dag voeren wij naar Rhodos en vandaar naar Patara. 2Daar vonden wij een schip dat naar de Syrische provincie Fenicië zou oversteken, wij gingen aan boord 3en zeilden langs Cyprus, dat in de verte aan bakboord lag, en kwamen in Syrië, waar wij de haven van Tyrus binnenliepen. Daar moest het schip worden gelost. 4Eenmaal aan land, vonden wij christenen en bleven een week bij hen. Geleid door de Heilige Geest zeiden zij tegen Paulus dat hij maar niet naar Jeruzalem moest gaan. 5Maar toen onze tijd erop zat, gingen wij weer op reis. De hele gemeente, vrouwen en kinderen inbegrepen, deed ons uitgeleide op het strand. Daar knielden wij neer en baden met elkaar. Nadat we afscheid hadden genomen, 6gingen wij aan boord van het schip en keerden zij terug naar huis.
7De volgende haven die we aandeden, was Ptolemaïs. Daar brachten we de christenen een bezoek, maar bleven slechts een dag. 8Daarna gingen wij naar Caesarea en logeerden bij de evangelist Filippus, een van de eerste zeven helpers in de gemeente van Jeruzalem. 9Deze broeder had vier ongetrouwde dochters, die vaak woorden van God doorgaven en dus profetessen waren.
10Wij waren daar al enkele dagen toen Agabus, een profeet uit Judea, arriveerde. 11Hij stapte op ons toe, pakte de riem van Paulus en bond zichzelf ermee vast. ‘Luister naar de woorden van de Heilige Geest,’ zei hij. ‘Zo zullen de Joden in Jeruzalem de eigenaar van deze riem vastbinden en aan de Romeinen uitleveren.’ 12Toen we dat hoorden, smeekten wij en de andere christenen Paulus niet naar Jeruzalem te gaan. 13Maar hij antwoordde: ‘Waarom probeert u mij door uw tranen te vermurwen? Ik ben niet alleen bereid me in Jeruzalem te laten binden, maar ook voor de Here Jezus te sterven.’ 14Toen wij begrepen dat hij zich niet liet ompraten, gaven wij het over en zeiden: ‘Wat God wil, moet gebeuren.’
15Niet lang daarna maakten wij ons klaar en vertrokken naar Jeruzalem. 16Enkele christenen uit Caesarea gingen met ons mee en brachten ons naar het huis van Mnason, een Cyprioot bij wie wij de nacht zouden doorbrengen. Hij was een van de eerste christenen.
17Bij onze aankomst in Jeruzalem werden wij door de christenen hartelijk ontvangen. 18De volgende dag gingen wij met Paulus naar Jakobus. Alle christenleiders uit Jeruzalem waren er ook. 19Na de begroeting deed Paulus uitgebreid verslag over wat God door hem onder de niet-Joodse volken had gedaan. 20Toen zij dat hoorden, prezen zij God. Daarna zeiden zij tegen Paulus: ‘U ziet, broeder, dat hier vele duizenden Joden in Jezus zijn gaan geloven. Ieder van hen hecht grote waarde aan de wet van Mozes. 21Maar zij hebben gehoord dat u de Joden in het buitenland leert dat zij zich niet meer aan de wet van Mozes hoeven houden. U zou hebben gezegd dat zij hun pasgeboren jongetjes niet hoeven te besnijden en ook dat zij zich niet aan de Joodse gebruiken hoeven te houden.
22Wat moeten wij daar nu mee? Want zij zullen vast horen dat u hier bent. 23Wij hebben een voorstel. Er zijn in ons midden vier mannen die een plechtige belofte hebben afgelegd. 24Ga met hen mee en neem, net als zij, deel aan de reinigingsplechtigheid. Laat op uw kosten hun haar knippen. Dan zullen alle mensen in de stad weten dat het niet waar is wat over u wordt gezegd, maar dat u zelf trouw leeft volgens de wet van Mozes. 25Maar wat de christenen uit de niet-Joodse volken betreft: wij hebben hun in een gezamenlijke brief geschreven dat zij niet mogen eten of drinken wat aan afgoden is geofferd. Zij mogen geen vlees eten waar nog bloed in zit en ook geen bloed drinken. Ook mogen zij geen hoererij plegen.’
26Paulus nam de vier mannen mee en liet zich de volgende dag samen met hen reinigen. Daarna ging hij naar de tempel om bekend te maken op welke dag hun reinigingsweek voorbij zou zijn. Dan zou voor ieder van hen het offer worden gebracht, dat aan hun plechtige belofte een einde maakte.
27Toen die week bijna om was, zagen enkele Joden uit Asia Paulus in de tempel en hitsten het volk tegen hem op. Zij grepen hem en schreeuwden: 28‘Mannen van Israël, kom ons helpen! Dit is de man die overal ingaat tegen ons volk, onze wet en onze tempel. En nu heeft hij ook nog Grieken in de tempel gebracht en daarmee dit heilige gebouw ontwijd!’ 29Zij hadden hem namelijk kort tevoren met Trofimus uit Efeze, die geen Jood was, in de stad gezien en dachten dat hij hem in de tempel had meegenomen. 30De hele stad was in rep en roer en er ontstond een volksoploop. Paulus werd vastgegrepen en de tempel uitgesleurd, en de poorten werden meteen gesloten.
31De woedende menigte stortte zich op Paulus en probeerde hem te doden. Ondertussen werd aan de commandant van het Romeinse garnizoen gemeld dat heel Jeruzalem in opschudding was. 32Hij rukte meteen uit met zijn soldaten en officieren. Zodra de oproerkraaiers de commandant en zijn soldaten zagen aankomen, hielden zij op met slaan. 33De commandant stapte op Paulus toe, greep hem en liet hem met twee kettingen boeien. Daarna vroeg hij de mensen wie die man was en wat hij had gedaan. 34Zij schreeuwden allemaal door elkaar, zodat hij er niet wijs uit kon worden. Daarom gaf hij bevel Paulus naar het fort te brengen. 35Toen zij bij de trappen van het fort kwamen, drong de menigte zo heftig tegen Paulus op dat de soldaten hem naar boven moesten dragen. 36‘Weg met hem!’ schreeuwde de mensenmassa.
37Bovenaan de trappen, vlak voordat hij het fort binnengebracht zou worden, vroeg Paulus de commandant: ‘Mag ik iets zeggen?’ 38‘Spreekt u Grieks?’ vroeg de man. ‘Bent u dan niet de Egyptenaar die een tijd geleden een opstand heeft ontketend en met vierduizend misdadigers de woestijn is ingetrokken?’ 39‘Nee,’ zei Paulus. ‘Ik ben een Joods burger uit Tarsus, een bekende stad in Cilicië. Ik verzoek u dringend mij toe te staan iets tot het volk te zeggen.’ 40Toen de commandant hem toestemming gaf, keerde Paulus zich om en wenkte het volk om stilte. Zodra het stil geworden was, sprak hij het volk toe in het Hebreeuws.
