1Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: 2Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. 4And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. 5And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily. 6Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. 8And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. 9And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. 11Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; 12And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. 13And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14¶ And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. 15And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
16¶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19¶ And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25¶ And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. 35And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. 36And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. 37But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. 38And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. 39And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. 40And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
1Paolo e Sila giunsero dapprima a Derbe, poi proseguirono per Listra, dove incontrarono Timòteo, un credente che aveva la madre giudeo-cristiana, suo padre invece era greco. 2Timòteo era ben visto dai cristiani di Listra e Iconio. 3Paolo gli chiese di accompagnarli durante il viaggio. Però per rispetto ai Giudei di quella zona, prima di partire, lo fece circoncidere, perché tutti sapevano che suo padre era greco. 4Passando di città in città, essi comunicavano alle varie chiese le decisioni prese dagli apostoli e dagli anziani di Gerusalemme, e si raccomandavano che le osservassero. 5Così le chiese crescevano giorno per giorno nella fede, e i cristiani aumentavano di numero.
6Poi attraversarono la Frigia e la Galazia, perché lo Spirito Santo li aveva avvertiti di non andare nella provincia dellʼAsia. 7Arrivati ai confini della Misia, Paolo, Sila e Timòteo avevano intenzione di arrivare a nord, verso la Bitinia, ma di nuovo lo Spirito Santo di Gesù non glielo permise. 8Allora, attraversata la provincia della Misia, raggiunsero la città di Troade.
La visione di Paolo
9Quella notte, Paolo ebbe una visione. Nel suo sogno vide un Macedone, un Greco, che lo implorava: «Vieni ad aiutarci!» 10In quattro e quattrʼotto fu deciso.
Saremmo andati in Macedonia, perché era chiaro che il Signore ci chiamava a predicare il Vangelo agli abitanti di quella provincia.
11Dopo esserci imbarcati a Troade, facemmo vela per lʼisola di Samotracia, e il giorno seguente proseguimmo per Neapoli. 12Finalmente raggiungemmo Filippi, colonia romana e capoluogo di quella parte della Macedonia. Là rimanemmo per diversi giorni.
13Un sabato uscimmo dalla città, per andare a pregare: pensavamo infatti che lungo il fiume ci fosse un posto dove la gente si riuniva per pregare. Fu là che ci mettemmo a parlare con alcune donne che si erano riunite. 14Una di loro si chiamava Lidia: veniva dalla città di Tiatira e commerciava in stoffe di porpora. Lidia adorava già il vero Dio e, mentre ci ascoltava, il Signore aprì il suo cuore ed ella aderì a ciò che Paolo diceva. 15Dopo essere stata battezzata con tutta la sua famiglia, cʼinvitò a casa sua: «Se mi considerate credente nel Signore», ci disse, «dovete essere miei ospiti!» E insistette finché non accettammo.
16Un giorno, mentre stavamo tornando al solito posto vicino al fiume, per pregare, ci venne incontro una schiava indemoniata, che prediceva il futuro e così guadagnava molto denaro per i suoi padroni. 17La ragazza cominciò a seguirci, gridando: «Questi uomini sono servi del Dio Altissimo, sono venuti ad annunciarvi la via della salvezza!»
18La cosa si ripeté per parecchi giorni, finché Paolo, che non ne poteva più, si voltò e disse al demonio che era dentro di lei: «Nel nome di Gesù Cristo, ti ordino di uscire da questa donna!» In quel momento stesso lo spirito maligno uscì dalla schiava.
19Ma i suoi padroni, vedendo svanire ogni speranza di altri guadagni, presero Paolo e Sila, li portarono davanti ai giudici, sulla pubblica piazza e li accusarono con queste parole:
20-21«Questi Giudei mettono sottosopra la nostra città e insegnano riti che noi, come sudditi di Roma, non possiamo accettare e tanto meno mettere in pratica».
In prigione
22Ben presto anche la folla insorse contro Paolo e Sila. I giudici allora ordinarono di strappare loro i vestiti di dosso e di bastonarli. 23Uno dopo lʼaltro i colpi segnavano profondamente la schiena di Paolo e Sila che, dopo la punizione, furono gettati in prigione. Il loro carceriere fu minacciato di morte, se se li fosse lasciati scappare. 24Allora lʼuomo, per tenerli al sicuro, li gettò nella cella più interna, e mise loro i ceppi ai piedi.
25Verso mezzanotte, mentre Paolo e Sila stavano pregando e cantando inni al Signore, e gli altri prigionieri ascoltavano, 26allʼimprovviso ci fu un grande terremoto. La prigione fu scossa dalle fondamenta, tutte le porte si aprirono e le catene dei carcerati caddero a terra! 27Il carceriere, svegliatosi di soprassalto, quando vide le porte delle celle spalancate, pensò che i prigionieri fossero scappati e sguainò la spada per uccidersi.
28Ma Paolo gridò ad alta voce: «Non farlo! Siamo ancora tutti qui!»
29Allora il carceriere, dopo aver chiesto una lanterna, si precipitò nella cella di Paolo e Sila e, tutto tremante, si gettò ai loro piedi. 30Poi li portò fuori e chiese: «Signori, che devo fare per essere salvato?»
31«Credi nel Signore Gesù e sarai salvato tu e tutta la tua famiglia», gli risposero.
32Poi Paolo e Sila annunciarono il Vangelo del Signore a lui e a tutta la sua famiglia. 33In quella stessa ora della notte, il carceriere curò le loro piaghe e, insieme con la sua famiglia si fece subito battezzare. 34Poi, dopo averli accompagnati a casa sua, apparecchiò la tavola per loro. Che felicità per lui e per i suoi familiari essere tutti credenti! 35Il giorno seguente, i giudici mandarono delle guardie a dire al carceriere: «Lasciate liberi quegli uomini!» 36Allora il carceriere disse a Paolo: «Siete liberi, andatevene in pace!»
37Ma Paolo rispose: «No davvero! Ci hanno fatto bastonare in pubblico, e senza processo, per giunta! Poi ci hanno gettato in prigione, benché fossimo cittadini romani, ed ora vorrebbero mandarci via alla chetichella?! Ah, questa poi! Che vengano loro a portarci fuori!»
38Le guardie riferirono queste parole ai giudici, i quali, sentendo che Paolo e Sila erano cittadini romani, furono presi da una grande paura. 39Allora andarono subito in prigione da loro e, con le buone maniere, li portarono fuori, pregandoli di lasciare la città. 40Usciti di prigione, Paolo e Sila tornarono alla casa di Lidia, dove si incontrarono con i credenti, poi, dopo aver predicato loro ancora una volta, lasciarono la città.
