1Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 6And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 9And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. 11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 13And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. 15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. 16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. 17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. 18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. 19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and there abode.
20¶ And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country. 21And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. 22And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. 23And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
24¶ But the word of God grew and multiplied. 25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
En ängel befriar Petrus ur fängelset
1Ungefär samtidigt började kung Herodes gripa och misshandla flera av församlingens medlemmar. 2Han lät halshugga Jakob, Johannes bror 3och när han såg att judarna gillade det, arresterade han också Petrus. Detta hände under det osyrade brödets högtid12:3 Påsk.. 4Efter arresteringen satte han Petrus i fängelse och lät fyra vaktstyrkor med vardera fyra man bevaka honom. Herodes hade efter påsken tänkt ställa Petrus inför folket. 5Men medan Petrus satt där fängslad, bad församlingen ivrigt till Gud för honom.
6Natten innan Herodes tänkt ställa honom inför rätta, låg Petrus och sov fastkedjad mellan två soldater och utanför dörren fanns vakter som vaktade fängelset. 7Då fylldes cellen plötsligt av ljus och en ängel från Herren stod där. Ängeln stötte Petrus i sidan och väckte honom och sa: ”Res dig upp, snabbt!” Och i samma stund föll kedjorna från Petrus händer. 8Ängeln fortsatte: ”Ta på dig bältet och sandalerna”, och när Petrus gjort det, sa ängeln: ”Svep nu om dig manteln och följ mig!”
9Petrus följde med ängeln ut, men han förstod inte att det som ängeln gjorde var något som hände i verkligheten; han trodde att det var en syn. 10De passerade först en vaktpost och sedan en till och var till slut framme vid järnporten som ledde ut mot staden. Där öppnade sig porten för dem alldeles av sig själv, det var bara att gå ut. Och sedan de gått nerför gatan en bit, var ängeln plötsligt borta.
11När Petrus hade samlat sig, sa han till sig själv: ”Nu vet jag att det är sant att Herren sände sin ängel och räddade mig från Herodes, från allt som judarna hade väntat skulle hända mig.” 12Och när han fattat det helt och fullt, gick han hem till Maria, mor till den Johannes som kallades Markus. Där var många samlade och bad.
13Petrus bultade på porten och en flicka som hette Rhode kom för att låsa upp. 14Men när hon kände igen Petrus röst, blev hon så glad att hon inte öppnade utan sprang istället tillbaka in och berättade att Petrus stod utanför. 15”Du är galen”, sa de. Men hon gav sig inte och då sa de: ”Det kanske är hans ängel?12:15 De syftade på hans ”skyddsängel” (jfr Matt 18:10). Många judar trodde att denna ängel liknade människan i fråga och kunde visa sig för andra.”
16Under tiden fortsatte Petrus att bulta och när de öppnade och såg att det var han, blev de utom sig av häpnad. 17Men han gav tecken åt dem att vara tysta och berättade sedan för dem hur Herren hade fört honom ut ur fängelset. Till sist sa han: ”Låt Jakob12:17 Jakob var bror till Jesus och ledare för församlingen. och de andra i församlingen få veta detta”, och så gick han vidare till en annan plats.
18När morgonen kom, blev det stor uppståndelse bland soldaterna i fängelset. Ingen kunde fatta vad som hade hänt med Petrus. 19Och när Herodes skickade efter Petrus och inte fick tag i honom, ställde han till med förhör bland vakterna och beordrade att de skulle föras bort.
Efter detta lämnade Herodes Judeen och for till Caesarea och stannade där.
Herodes död
20Invånarna i Tyros och Sidon12:20 Tyros och Sidon var fenikiska städer vid Medelhavets kust, nordväst om Galileen. som var beroende av Herodes land för sin matförsörjning hade gjort Herodes vred. De skickade därför en gemensam delegation till Herodes för att be om fred då de lyckats få över kungens kammarherre Blastos på sin sida.
21På den bestämda dagen tog sedan Herodes på sig den kungliga manteln, satte sig på tribunen och talade till dem. 22Folket ropade: ”Det är en gud som talar och inte en människa!” 23Men i samma ögonblick slog en ängel från Herren honom, eftersom han inte gav Gud äran och han blev uppäten av maskar och dog.
Barnabas och Saul sänds ut från Antiochia
24Men Guds ord spreds allt mer och gav tillväxt.
25Och sedan Barnabas och Saul hade fullgjort sitt uppdrag i Jerusalem, återvände de till Antiochia och tog med sig Johannes som kallades Markus.
