1And the apostles and brethren that were in Judæa heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 2And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. 4But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, 5I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: 6Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 7And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. 8But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. 9But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 10And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Cæsarea unto me. 12And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house: 13And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; 14Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. 15And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 17Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? 18When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
19¶ Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
22¶ Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. 23Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. 25Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
27¶ And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. 28And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cæsar. 29Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judæa: 30Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Le rapport de Pierre aux croyants de Jérusalem
1Les apôtres et les frères qui habitaient la Judée apprirent que les non-Juifs venaient d’accepter la Parole de Dieu. 2Et dès que Pierre fut de retour à Jérusalem, les croyants d’origine juive lui firent des reproches : 3Comment ! lui dirent-ils, tu es entré chez des incirconcis et tu as mangé avec eux !
4Mais Pierre se mit à leur exposer, point par point, ce qui s’était passé.
5– Pendant mon séjour à Jaffa, dit-il, j’étais en train de prier, quand je suis tombé en extase et j’ai eu une vision : une sorte de grande toile, tenue aux quatre coins, est descendue du ciel et elle est venue tout près de moi. 6J’ai regardé attentivement ce qu’il y avait dedans et j’ai vu des quadrupèdes, des bêtes sauvages, des reptiles et des oiseaux. 7J’ai entendu alors une voix qui me disait : « Lève-toi, Pierre, tue ces bêtes et mange-les. » 8Mais j’ai répondu : « Oh ! non, Seigneur, car jamais de ma vie je n’ai rien mangé de souillé ou d’impur. » 9La voix céleste s’est fait entendre une deuxième fois : « Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, ce n’est pas à toi de le considérer comme impur. »
10Cela est arrivé trois fois, puis tout a disparu dans le ciel.
11Et voilà qu’au même moment trois hommes sont arrivés à la maison où nous nous trouvions11.11 Certains manuscrits ont : je me trouvais.. Ils venaient de Césarée et avaient été envoyés vers moi. 12Alors l’Esprit me dit d’aller avec eux sans hésiter. Je pris donc avec moi les six frères que voici et nous nous sommes rendus chez cet homme.
13Celui-ci nous a raconté qu’un ange lui était apparu dans sa maison et lui avait dit : « Envoie quelqu’un à Jaffa pour faire venir chez toi Simon, surnommé Pierre. 14Il te dira comment toi et tous les tiens vous serez sauvés. »
15J’ai donc commencé à leur parler, quand l’Esprit Saint est descendu sur eux, de la même manière qu’il était descendu sur nous au commencement. 16Aussitôt, je me suis souvenu de cette parole du Seigneur :
Jean a baptisé dans de l’eau, mais vous,
vous serez baptisés dans le Saint-Esprit.
17Puisque Dieu leur a accordé le même don qu’à nous quand nous avons cru, qui étais-je, moi, pour pouvoir m’opposer à Dieu ?
18Ce récit les apaisa et ils louèrent Dieu et dirent : Dieu a aussi donné aux non-Juifs de changer pour recevoir la vie.
La Parole annoncée aux non-Juifs à Antioche
19Les disciples s’étaient dispersés lors de la persécution survenue après la mort d’Etienne. Ils allèrent jusqu’en Phénicie, dans l’île de Chypre et à Antioche11.19 Antioche: capitale de la province romaine de Syrie. Troisième ville de l’Empire romain (après Rome et Alexandrie). Appelée souvent Antioche de Syrie pour la distinguer d’Antioche de Pisidie (voir 13.14)., mais ils n’annonçaient la Parole qu’aux Juifs. 20Toutefois, quelques-uns d’entre eux, qui étaient originaires de Chypre et de Cyrène, se rendirent à Antioche et s’adressèrent aussi aux non-Juifs11.20 Certains manuscrits ont : des Juifs de culture grecque. en leur annonçant le Seigneur Jésus. 21Or le Seigneur était avec eux ; un grand nombre de personnes crurent et se convertirent au Seigneur.
22Bientôt l’Eglise qui était à Jérusalem apprit la nouvelle. Elle envoya Barnabas à Antioche. 23A son arrivée, il constata ce que la grâce de Dieu avait accompli et il en fut rempli de joie. Il encouragea donc tous les croyants à rester fidèles au Seigneur avec une ferme assurance. 24Barnabas était en effet un homme bienveillant, rempli d’Esprit Saint et de foi. Et un grand nombre de personnes s’attachèrent au Seigneur. 25Barnabas se rendit alors à Tarse pour y chercher Saul. Quand il l’eut trouvé, il l’amena avec lui à Antioche. 26Ils passèrent toute une année à travailler ensemble dans l’Eglise et enseignèrent beaucoup de gens. C’est à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples de Jésus furent appelés « chrétiens ».
27A cette même époque, des prophètes se rendirent de Jérusalem à Antioche. 28L’un d’eux, nommé Agabus, se leva et prédit sous l’inspiration de l’Esprit qu’une grande famine sévirait bientôt dans le monde entier11.28 Le monde entier: expression qui désigne souvent l’Empire romain (voir Lc 2.1-2).. Elle eut lieu, en effet, sous le règne de l’empereur Claude11.28 Claude: empereur romain qui a régné de 41 à 54 apr. J.-C. La famine a sévi dans diverses provinces romaines entre 46 et 48.. 29Les disciples d’Antioche décidèrent alors de donner, chacun selon ses moyens, et d’envoyer des secours aux frères qui habitaient la Judée. 30C’est ce qu’ils firent : ils envoyèrent leurs dons aux responsables de l’Eglise par l’intermédiaire de Barnabas et de Saul11.30 Deuxième visite de Paul à Jérusalem, qui coïncide selon certains avec celle qu’il mentionne en Ga 2.1-10..
