1Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.
2¶ And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; 3And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;3.3 Chileab: or, Daniel 4And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David’s wife. These were born to David in Hebron.
6¶ And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
7And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father’s concubine? 8Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman? 9So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; 10To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba. 11And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
12¶ And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
13¶ And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.3.13 that is: Heb. saying 14And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. 15And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.3.15 Phaltiel: also called, Phalti 16And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. 17¶ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:3.17 in times…: Heb. both yesterday and the third day 18Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies. 19And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin. 20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. 21And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22¶ And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace. 23When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace. 24Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone? 25Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest. 26And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not. 27And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.3.27 quietly: or, peaceably
28¶ And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:3.28 blood: Heb. bloods 29Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.3.29 fail: Heb. be cut off 30So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31¶ And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.3.31 bier: Heb. bed 32And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. 33And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth? 34Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. 1Der Krieg zwischen den Anhängern von Sauls Sohn Isch-Boschet und Davids Anhängern zog sich lange hin. Mit der Zeit wurde David immer stärker und mächtiger, während die andere Seite an Macht und Ansehen verlor.
Davids Familie in Hebron
2Als David in Hebron wohnte, wurden ihm mehrere Söhne geboren: Der älteste hieß Amnon, seine Mutter war Ahinoam aus Jesreel. 3Danach kam Kilab, seine Mutter war Abigajil aus Karmel, die Witwe von Nabal. Der dritte Sohn war Absalom, seine Mutter hieß Maacha und war eine Tochter von Talmai, dem König von Geschur. 4Der vierte Sohn hieß Adonija, und seine Mutter war Haggit. Der fünfte war Schefatja, seine Mutter hieß Abital. 5Jitream, der sechste, war der Sohn von Davids Frau Egla. Diese sechs Söhne wurden in Hebron geboren.
Abner und Isch-Boschet geraten aneinander
6Während des Krieges zwischen Isch-Boschet und David hielt Abner treu zu Sauls Königshaus.
7Eines Tages aber stellte Isch-Boschet Abner zur Rede, weil er mit einer Nebenfrau des verstorbenen Königs Saul geschlafen hatte. Die Frau hieß Rizpa und war eine Tochter von Ajja. 8Abner wurde wütend und beschimpfte Isch-Boschet: »Was denkst du eigentlich, wer ich bin? Ein mieser Verräter, der zum Stamm Juda hält? Die ganze Zeit schon kämpfe ich mit aller Kraft für das Königshaus deines Vaters, ich helfe seinen Verwandten und Freunden. Dich habe ich beschützt, damit du David nicht in die Hände fällst. Und was ist der Dank? Wegen einer Frauengeschichte führst du dich nun so auf! 9-10Ich habe genug von dir! Von jetzt an unterstütze ich David. Der Herr hat schließlich geschworen, dass er Sauls Familie vom Thron stoßen und David die Herrschaft geben wird. Gott soll mich hart bestrafen, wenn ich nicht dafür sorge, dass David bald König ist über ganz Israel und Juda, von Dan im Norden bis Beerscheba im Süden!«
11Isch-Boschet brachte kein Wort mehr heraus, denn er hatte große Angst vor Abner.
Abner verhandelt mit David
12Abner schickte Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: »Ich weiß so gut wie du, wem die Herrschaft über unser Land zusteht. Darum mache ich dir einen Vorschlag: Verbünde dich mit mir! Ich stelle mich auf deine Seite und sorge dafür, dass ganz Israel dich als König anerkennt.«
13»Gut«, antwortete David, »ich werde mich mit dir verbünden, doch nur unter einer Bedingung: Du musst mir meine Frau Michal, Sauls Tochter, mitbringen. Sonst verhandle ich nicht mit dir.« 14Zugleich sandte David Boten zu Sauls Sohn Isch-Boschet mit der Forderung: »Gib mir meine Frau Michal zurück! Schließlich habe ich für sie einen Brautpreis bezahlt: die Vorhäute von hundert Philistern.« 15Isch-Boschet ließ Michal von ihrem zweiten Mann Paltiël, einem Sohn von Lajisch, wegholen. 16Der Mann konnte sich aber nicht von ihr trennen. Weinend lief er ihr nach bis Bahurim. Schließlich fuhr Abner ihn an: »Geh endlich zurück!« Da erst kehrte er um.
17Abner hatte vorher mit den Sippenoberhäuptern Israels eine Unterredung gehabt und ihnen gesagt: »Ihr wolltet doch schon lange, dass David euer König wird. 18Jetzt ist der Augenblick zum Handeln gekommen! Der Herr selbst hat ja versprochen: ›Durch meinen Diener David will ich mein Volk aus der Gewalt der Philister und aller anderen Feinde befreien.‹« 19Das Gleiche sagte Abner auch den führenden Männern des Stammes Benjamin. Danach reiste er nach Hebron, um David zu melden, was die Sippenoberhäupter von Israel und vom Stamm Benjamin beschlossen hatten.
20Eine Abordnung von zwanzig Männern begleitete Abner nach Hebron. Dort gab David ein Festessen für sie. 21Bevor Abner sich wieder verabschiedete, sagte er zu David: »Ich gehe nun zurück und lasse die Vertreter des ganzen Volkes zu einer Versammlung kommen, an der auch du, mein Herr, teilnehmen sollst. Ich werde dafür sorgen, dass sie dich als ihren neuen König anerkennen und einen Bund mit dir schließen. Dann bist du König über das ganze Land, wie du es dir schon lange gewünscht hast!« David verabschiedete Abner und ließ ihn unbehelligt gehen.
Abners Ermordung
22Kurz darauf kam Joab mit Davids Soldaten von einem Streifzug zurück. Sie hatten reiche Beute gemacht. 23Kaum waren sie in der Stadt, wurde Joab berichtet: »Abner, der Sohn von Ner, ist beim König gewesen, und der ließ ihn unbehelligt wieder ziehen.« 24Sofort lief Joab zum König und rief: »Was habe ich da gehört? Abner war hier, und du hast ihn einfach wieder gehen lassen? 25Du kennst ihn doch, er heuchelt dir nur etwas vor! In Wirklichkeit wollte er ausspionieren, was du tust und vorhast.«
26Joab schickte einige Boten hinter Abner her, die ihn zurückbringen sollten. Bei der Zisterne von Sira holten sie ihn ein, und er kehrte mit ihnen um; der König aber wusste nichts davon. 27Als Abner in Hebron angekommen war, nahm Joab ihn beiseite und führte ihn in einen Raum im Stadttor, als wollte er heimlich etwas mit ihm besprechen. Doch plötzlich zog er sein Schwert und stieß es Abner in den Bauch. So brachte Joab ihn um und rächte sich dafür, dass er seinen Bruder Asaël getötet hatte.
28Als David davon erfuhr, rief er: »Ich schwöre vor dem Herrn, dass ich unschuldig bin an Abners Tod, und auch meine Nachfolger sollen niemals dafür büßen müssen! 29Joab allein trägt die Verantwortung. Ihn und seine Familie soll die gerechte Strafe treffen: Von jetzt an sollen immer einige seiner Nachkommen eine Geschlechtskrankheit haben, aussätzig oder gelähmt sein, ermordet werden oder Hunger leiden.« 30So rächten sich Joab und sein Bruder Abischai an Abner. Sie ermordeten ihn, weil er in der Schlacht bei Gibeon ihren Bruder Asaël getötet hatte.
David trauert um Abner
31-32David befahl Joab und den anderen, die bei ihm waren: »Zerreißt eure Kleider, hüllt euch in Trauergewänder und haltet die Totenklage um Abner!« Die Beerdigung fand in Hebron statt. Im Trauerzug ging David direkt hinter der Bahre her. Am Grab ließ er seinen Tränen freien Lauf, und alle Versammelten weinten mit. 33Dann stimmte David dieses Klagelied für Abner an:
»Abner, warum musstest du wie ein Verbrecher sterben? 34Deine Hände waren nicht gebunden, deine Füße lagen nicht in Ketten. Nein, Mördern fielst du in die Hände, du warst ihnen schutzlos ausgeliefert.«
Da weinten alle noch mehr um den Toten. 35Den ganzen Tag über wollten die Leute David dazu überreden, etwas zu essen. Doch er schwor: »Gott soll mich hart bestrafen, wenn ich vor Sonnenuntergang auch nur einen Bissen Brot zu mir nehme!« 36Die Leute beobachteten, wie David sich verhielt, und es gefiel ihnen. Ja, an allem, was der König tat, fand das Volk Gefallen. 37Wer bei der Beerdigung gewesen war, war überzeugt, dass David nichts mit dem Mord an Abner zu tun hatte, und alle Israeliten dachten ebenso. 38David sagte zu seinen Hofleuten: »Heute ist ein großer und bedeutender Mann aus Israel umgebracht worden. 39Ich bin erst vor kurzem zum König gesalbt worden und besitze noch nicht genug Macht, um gegen meine beiden Neffen Joab und Abischai vorzugehen. Möge der Herr dafür sorgen, dass sie die gerechte Strafe für ihre Bosheit bekommen!«
