1And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 2And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. 6¶ So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim; 7Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men. 8For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.18.8 devoured: Heb. multiplied to devour
9¶ And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. 10And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. 11And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle. 12And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.18.12 receive: Heb. weigh upon mine hand18.12 Beware…: Heb. 18¶ Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.

And the king said, He also bringeth tidings. 27And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. 33¶ And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
De dood van Absalom
1David inspecteerde zijn troepen en stelde commandanten aan. 2Een derde gedeelte werd onder leiding van Joabs broer Abisaï geplaatst, een ander derde gedeelte onder de Gathiet Ittai. Joab zelf leidde het andere derde deel. De koning was vastbesloten de leiding over het hele leger te nemen. 3‘Dat moet u niet doen,’ zeiden de mannen, ‘want als wij ons onverhoopt moeten terugtrekken en de helft van ons sneuvelt, zal het voor hen niets uitmaken, zij zullen het alleen op u voorzien hebben. U bent tienduizend man waard, daarom is het beter dat u hier in de stad blijft en ons hulp zendt als wij dat nodig hebben.’ 4‘Goed, ik zal naar jullie advies luisteren,’ zei David ten slotte berustend. Daarom stond hij aan de poort toen de troepen langs hem heen trokken. 5En de koning bond Joab, Abisaï en Ittai op het hart: ‘Behandel de jonge Absalom niet te ruw ter wille van mij.’ Alle soldaten hoorden hoe hij dit tegen hen zei.
6Toen ontbrandde de strijd in het woud van Efraïm 7en de Israëlitische troepen werden door Davids mannen teruggeslagen. Het was een grote slachtpartij, waarbij die dag twintigduizend mannen sneuvelden. 8In de hele streek werd gevochten en er kwamen meer mannen in het woud om dan er op het slagveld sneuvelden.
9Tijdens de strijd stootte Absalom op enkele mannen van David en toen hij op zijn muildier wegvluchtte, rende het dier onder de dikke takken van een grote eik door en raakte Absaloms haar verstrikt in die takken. Zijn muildier rende verder, terwijl hij aan een tak bleef hangen. 10Een van Davids mannen zag hem daar hangen en meldde het Joab. 11‘Wat? Je zag hem daar hangen en je hebt hem niet gedood?’ riep Joab boos. ‘Ik zou je rijk hebben beloond en je tot officier hebben bevorderd.’ 12‘Ik zou de prins nog voor geen duizend zilverstukken doden,’ antwoordde de man. ‘Wij hebben toch allemaal gehoord hoe de koning tegen u en Abisaï en Ittai zei dat omwille van hem Absalom niet ruw mocht worden behandeld. 13En als ik de koning had verraden door zijn zoon te doden (en de koning zou er zeker achterkomen wie het had gedaan) dan zou u zelf de eerste zijn geweest om mij te beschuldigen.’ 14‘Genoeg gekletst,’ vond Joab. Hij pakte drie werpspiesen en stak die door Absaloms hart, terwijl deze weerloos aan de boomtakken bungelde. 15Tien van Joabs jonge wapenknechten omringden Absalom daarna en doodden hem. 16Daarop blies Joab op zijn bazuin en zijn mannen staakten de achtervolging van de Israëlitische troepen. 17Zij gooiden Absaloms lijk in een diepe kuil in het woud en stapelden er een grote hoop stenen overheen. Het Israëlitische leger vluchtte ondertussen terug naar huis. 18Absalom had vroeger in het Koningsdal een monument voor zichzelf laten bouwen, want hij zei toen: ‘Ik heb geen zonen die mijn naam zullen dragen.’ Hij noemde het ‘Absaloms monument’ en zo heet het vandaag de dag nog steeds.
19Toen zei Zadoks zoon Ahimaäz: ‘Laat mij snel vooruitgaan naar koning David om het goede nieuws te brengen dat de Here hem heeft gered van zijn vijand Absalom.’ 20Maar Joab weigerde toestemming. ‘Het is geen goed nieuws voor de koning dat zijn zoon dood is,’ zei hij. ‘Een andere keer mag je mijn boodschapper zijn.’ 21Toen zei Joab tegen een Ethiopiër: ‘Ga de koning vertellen wat je hebt gezien.’ De man maakte een buiging en rende weg. 22Maar Ahimaäz hield niet op te vragen of hij ook weg mocht. ‘Nee, dat is niet nodig, mijn jongen,’ antwoordde Joab. ‘Er is toch geen ander nieuws te melden.’ 23‘Maar dan kunt u mij net zo goed wel laten gaan,’ hield Ahimaäz vol. Ten slotte gaf Joab toe. ‘Goed, ga dan maar,’ zei hij. Ahimaäz nam de weg over de vlakte en kwam daardoor voor op de Ethiopiër.
24David zat bij de stadspoort. Toen de wachter de trap opklom naar zijn uitkijkpost bovenop de muur, zag hij een eenzame loper naderen. 25Hij riep het nieuws naar David en de koning antwoordde: ‘Als hij alleen is, heeft hij vast en zeker nieuws.’ Toen de boodschapper dichterbij kwam, 26zag de wachter nog een man naderen. Hij riep naar beneden: ‘Er komt nog iemand aan.’ En de koning zei: ‘Die zal nog wel meer nieuws brengen.’ 27‘Aan het lopen van de eerste man kan ik zien dat het Ahimaäz, de zoon van Zadok is,’ zei de wachter. ‘Hij is een goed man en komt met goed nieuws,’ meende de koning. 28Toen riep Ahimaäz de koning toe: ‘Alles is in orde!’ Hij boog diep met zijn gezicht naar de grond en zei: ‘Gezegend zij de Here, uw God, die de rebellen heeft gedood die tegen u in opstand durfden te komen.’ 29‘Hoe is het met de jonge Absalom?’ wilde de koning weten. ‘Is alles goed met hem?’ ‘Toen Joab mij bij zich liet komen, hoorde ik een heleboel geschreeuw, maar ik weet niet precies wat er is gebeurd,’ antwoordde Ahimaäz.
30‘Wacht hier,’ beval de koning hem. Ahimaäz ging opzij. 31Toen bereikte de Ethiopiër de stad en zei: ‘Koning, ik heb goed nieuws voor u. Vandaag heeft de Here u gered van allen die tegen u in opstand waren gekomen.’ 32‘Hoe is het met mijn zoon Absalom? Is alles goed met hem?’ vroeg de koning dringend. En de man antwoordde: ‘Moge het met al uw vijanden zijn, zoals het met die jongeman is.’
33Toen werd de koning zeer bedroefd en hij liep naar zijn kamer boven de poort. Hij huilde: ‘Och mijn zoon Absalom, mijn zoon, mijn zoon Absalom. Had ik maar in jouw plaats kunnen sterven. Och Absalom, mijn zoon, mijn zoon.’
