15¶ Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. 17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David. 18Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down. 19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known. 20And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.
22Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.
23¶ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.17.23 followed: Heb. done17.23 put his…: Heb. gave charge concerning his house 24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25¶ And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man’s son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother.17.25 Ithra an Israelite: or, Jether an Ishmaelite17.25 Abigail: Heb. 27¶ And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse,17.28 basons: or, cups 29And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
حوشای نقشهٔ اخيتوفل را بی‌اثر می‌كند
1اخيتوفل به ابشالوم گفت: «دوازده هزار سرباز به من بده تا همين امشب داوود را تعقيب كنم. 2حال كه او خسته و درمانده است به او حمله می‌كنم تا افرادش پراكنده شوند. آنگاه فقط پادشاه را می‌كشم 3و تمام افرادش را به نزد تو باز می‌گردانم. با كشته شدن پادشاه مطمئناً همهٔ همراهانش بدون اينكه آسيبی ببينند نزد تو برخواهند گشت.»
4ابشالوم و همهٔ بزرگان اسرائيل اين نقشه را پسنديدند. 5ولی ابشالوم گفت: «نظر حوشای اركی را نيز در اين باره بپرسيد.»
6وقتی حوشای آمد، ابشالوم نقشهٔ اخيتوفل را برای او تعريف كرد و از او پرسيد: «نظر تو چيست؟ آيا با نقشهٔ او موافقی يا طرح ديگری داری؟»
7حوشای جواب داد: «فكر می‌كنم پيشنهادی كه اين بار اخيتوفل داده خوب نيست. 8تو پدرت و افراد او را خوب می‌شناسی. آنها جنگجويان شجاعی هستند. حال، مانند خرس ماده‌ای كه بچه‌هايش را دزديده باشند عصبانی هستند. پدرت سرباز كهنه‌كار و با تجربه‌ای است و شب در ميان سربازان خود نمی‌ماند. 9احتمالاً در غاری يا جای ديگری مخفی شده است. كافی است بيرون بيايد و حمله كند و چند نفر از افراد تو را بكشد، آنگاه همه جا شايع می‌شود كه پيروان تو سركوب شده‌اند. 10آنگاه شجاعترين افرادت، حتی اگر دل شير هم داشته باشند، از ترس روحيهٔ خود را خواهند باخت. چون تمام اسرائیلی‌ها می‌دانند كه پدرت چه مرد جنگاوری است و سربازانش چقدر شجاع هستند. 11پس پيشنهاد من اين است كه تمام سربازان اسرائيل را از سراسر كشور جمع كنی تا نيروی بزرگی داشته باشی، و خودت هم شخصاً فرماندهی آنها را به عهده بگيری. 12داوود و افرادش را هر جا باشند، پيدا می‌كنيم و آنها را غافلگير كرده، همه را از بين می‌بريم تا يک نفرشان هم زنده نماند. 13اگر داوود به شهری فرار كند، تمام سپاه اسرائيل كه در اختيار تو است ديوارهای شهر را با كمند به نزديكترين دره سرنگون می‌كنند تا با خاک يكسان شود و سنگی در آن نماند.»
14پس ابشالوم و تمام مردان اسرائيل گفتند: «پيشنهاد حوشای بهتر از پيشنهاد اخيتوفل است.» خداوند ترتيبی داده بود كه پيشنهاد خوب اخيتوفل پذيرفته نشود تا به اين وسيله ابشالوم را گرفتار مصيبت سازد. 15بعد حوشای نظر اخيتوفل و پيشنهادی را كه خودش به جای آن كرده بود، به صادوق و ابياتار كاهن گزارش داد.
16حوشای به آنها گفت: «زود باشيد! داوود را پيدا كنيد و به او بگوييد كه امشب در كنار رود اردن نماند، بلكه هر چه زودتر از رود عبور كند و گرنه او و تمام همراهانش كشته خواهند شد.»
17يوناتان و اخيمعص، برای اينكه ديده نشوند كنار چشمه عين روجل پنهان شده بودند و كنيزی برای ايشان خبر می‌آورد تا آنها نيز خبر را به داوود پادشاه برسانند. 18اما وقتی می‌خواستند از عين روجل پيش داوود بروند، پسری آنها را ديد و به ابشالوم خبر داد. پس يوناتان و اخيمعص به بحوريم گريختند و شخصی آنها را در چاهی كه در حيات خانه‌اش بود پنهان كرد. 19زن او سرپوشی روی چاه گذاشت و مقداری حبوبات روی آن ريخت تا كسی از موضوع باخبر نشود.
20وقتی افراد ابشالوم آمدند و سراغ اخيمعص و يوناتان را از آن زن گرفتند او گفت: «از رودخانه عبور كردند.» آنها پس از جستجوی زياد، دست خالی به اورشليم برگشتند. 21بعد از رفتن افراد ابشالوم، اخيمعص و يوناتان از چاه بيرون آمدند و بدون معطلی پيش پادشاه رفتند و گفتند: «زود باشيد امشب از رود عبور كنيد!» سپس برايش تعريف كردند كه چگونه اخيتوفل نقشهٔ كشتن او را كشيده است. 22پس داوود و همراهانش شبانه از رود اردن عبور كردند و قبل از سپيدهٔ صبح، همه به آن طرف رسيدند.
23وقتی اخيتوفل ديد ابشالوم پيشنهاد او را رد كرده است، الاغ خود را پالان كرد و به شهر خود رفت. او به كارهايش سروسامان بخشيد و رفت خود را به دار آويخت. مردم جنازهٔ او را در كنار قبر پدرش به خاک سپردند.
24طولی نكشيد كه داوود به محنايم رسيد. ابشالوم هم تمام سپاه اسرائيل را بسيج كرد و به آن طرف رود اردن برد. 25ابشالوم، عماسا را به جای يوآب به فرماندهی سپاه تعيين كرد. (عماسا پسر خالهٔ يوآب بود. پدرش يترای اسماعيلی و مادرش ابيجايل، دختر ناحاش و خواهر صرويه مادر يوآب بود.) 26ابشالوم و سپاه اسرائيل در سرزمين جلعاد اردو زدند.
27وقتی داوود به محنايم رسيد، شوبی (پسر ناحاش كه از اهالی شهر ربهٔ عمون بود) و ماخير (پسر عمی‌ئيل از لودبار) و برزلائی جلعادی (از روجليم) به استقبال او آمدند. 28-29آنها برای داوود و همراهانش وسايل خواب و خوراک آوردند، از جمله ديگهای خوراک‌پزی، كاسه‌ها، گندم و آرد جو، غلهٔ برشته، باقلا، عدس، نخود، عسل، كره، پنير و چند گوسفند. آنها می‌دانستند بعد از اين راهپيمايی طولانی در بيابان، حتماً خسته و گرسنه و تشنه هستند.
