1And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead. 2Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?10.3 Thinkest…: Heb. 6¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.10.6 Ish-tob: or, the men of Tob 7And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. 8And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon. 11And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee. 12Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good. 13And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.10.16 the river: that is, Euphrates10.16 Shobach: or, Shophach 17And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.10.18 horsemen: also called, footmen 19And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
Le conflit avec les Ammonites et les Syriens
(1 Ch 19.1-19)

Lorsque ceux-ci arrivèrent au pays des Ammonites, 3les dirigeants de ce peuple dirent à Hanoun, leur souverain : Crois-tu que ce soit pour honorer la mémoire de ton père que David t’envoie des gens t’adresser des condoléances ? N’est-ce pas plutôt pour reconnaître et espionner la ville10.3 C’est-à-dire Rabba, la capitale des Ammonites (11.1). afin de la détruire ?
4Alors Hanoun s’empara des ambassadeurs de David, leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe et leur fit couper les habits à mi-corps jusqu’en bas du dos, puis il les renvoya. 5Ceux-ci en furent si honteux que, lorsqu’on informa David de ce qui s’était passé, il envoya des messagers à leur rencontre pour leur faire dire : Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé ; vous reviendrez ensuite.
6Les Ammonites comprirent qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David. Alors ils envoyèrent des hommes pour enrôler à leur solde vingt « milliers »10.6 Voir note 2 S 6.1. de mercenaires chez les Syriens de Beth-Rehob et de Tsoba10.6 Voir note 8.3., un « millier » d’hommes chez le roi de Maaka, et douze « milliers » chez celui de Tob. 7Quand David l’apprit, il envoya contre eux Joab avec toute l’armée des soldats de métier.
8Les Ammonites firent une sortie et se rangèrent en ordre de bataille à la porte de leur capitale, tandis que les Syriens de Tsoba et de Rehob avec les soldats de Tob et de Maaka restaient à part en rase campagne. 9Voyant qu’il aurait à faire face sur deux fronts à la fois, devant et derrière lui, Joab sélectionna ses meilleurs soldats et les fit ranger en ordre de bataille face aux Syriens ; 10il confia le commandement du reste de l’armée à son frère Abishaï qui le rangea en ordre de bataille pour affronter les Ammonites. 11Joab dit à son frère : Si tu vois que les Syriens l’emportent sur moi, tu viendras à ma rescousse ; si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, c’est moi qui viendrai à ton secours. 12Bon courage, et luttons vaillamment pour défendre notre peuple et les villes de notre Dieu ! Et que l’Eternel fasse ce qu’il jugera bon !
13Alors Joab et sa troupe s’avancèrent pour le combat contre les Syriens. Ceux-ci prirent la fuite devant eux. 14Quand les Ammonites virent que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, ils s’enfuirent à leur tour devant Abishaï et se retirèrent dans la ville. Alors Joab mit fin à la campagne contre les Ammonites et rentra à Jérusalem.
15Les Syriens, voyant qu’ils avaient été mis en fuite par les Israélites, rassemblèrent toutes leurs troupes. 16Le roi Hadadézer envoya des messagers pour mobiliser les Syriens établis de l’autre côté de l’Euphrate. Ils arrivèrent à Hélam avec, à leur tête, Shobak, le chef de l’armée de Hadadézer. 17Quand David en fut informé, il mobilisa tout Israël, traversa le Jourdain et marcha sur Hélam10.17 Ville proche de la frontière nord de Galaad.. Les Syriens se rangèrent en ordre de bataille pour affronter David et engagèrent le combat, 18mais ils furent mis en fuite par les Israélites. David leur tua sept cents chevaux attelés aux chars et quarante mille soldats sur char10.18 Certains manuscrits de l’ancienne version grecque ont : les soldats de sept cents chars et quarante mille fantassins. 1 Ch 19.18 dit : les soldats de sept mille chars et quarante mille fantassins.. Il frappa aussi Shobak, leur général en chef, qui mourut sur le champ de bataille. 19Quand tous les rois vassaux de Hadadézer virent qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils firent la paix avec les Israélites et leur furent assujettis. Après cela, les Syriens n’osèrent plus venir au secours des Ammonites.
