1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath. 2And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
3¶ And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying, 4Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:22.4 door: Heb. threshold 5And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house, 6Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house. 7Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.
8¶ And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.22.9 gathered: Heb. melted 10And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

15¶ And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me, 16Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read: 17Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. 18But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard; 19Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD. 20Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
Le règne de Josias sur Juda
(2 Ch 34.1-2, 8-28)
1Josias avait huit ans à son avènement et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem22.1 De 640 à 609 av. J.-C.. Sa mère s’appelait Yedida, elle était fille d’Adaya de Botsqath. 2Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste et suivit en tout l’exemple de son ancêtre David sans jamais s’en écarter ni d’un côté ni de l’autre.
La découverte du livre de la Loi
3La dix-huitième année de son règne22.3 C’est-à-dire en 622 av. J.-C. A 16 ans, il commença à servir fidèlement le Seigneur et à 20 ans, il entreprit de purifier le pays des pratiques idolâtres (2 Ch 34.3)., Josias envoya son secrétaire Shaphân22.3 Partisan de la Réforme de Josias, protecteur de Jérémie (Jr 26.24), père de Guedalia qui sera le futur gouverneur de Juda nommé par Nabuchodonosor (25.22 ; Jr 39.14)., fils d’Atsalia et petit-fils de Meshoullam, au temple de l’Eternel. Il lui dit : 4Va trouver le grand-prêtre Hilqiya22.4 Père d’Azaria et grand-père de Seraya, le grand-prêtre exécuté au temps de la destruction de Jérusalem par les Babyloniens (25.18-20). et demande-lui de compter tout l’argent qui a été apporté dans le temple de l’Eternel et que les portiers ont recueilli. 5Que l’on remette cet argent aux entrepreneurs qui ont la responsabilité des travaux dans le temple de l’Eternel. Ceux-ci paieront les ouvriers qui effectuent les réparations dans le Temple : 6les charpentiers, les ouvriers du bâtiment, les maçons. Ils achèteront aussi le bois et les pierres de taille pour consolider l’édifice. 7On ne leur demandera pas de compte pour l’argent qui leur est confié, car ce sont des gens honnêtes.
8A cette occasion, le grand-prêtre Hilqiya annonça à Shaphân, le secrétaire : J’ai trouvé le livre de la Loi dans le temple de l’Eternel22.8 Ce qui révèle la gravité de la révolte contre l’Eternel sous Manassé. Le livre retrouvé était, soit l’ensemble du Pentateuque, soit uniquement le livre du Deutéronome..
Et Hilqiya remit le livre à Shaphân. Celui-ci le lut, 9puis il se rendit auprès du roi pour lui faire un rapport : Tes serviteurs, dit-il, ont versé l’argent qui se trouvait dans le Temple aux entrepreneurs responsables des travaux dans le Temple. 10Puis il ajouta : Le prêtre Hilqiya m’a remis un livre.
Et Shaphân se mit à en faire la lecture devant le roi.
L’intervention de la prophétesse Houlda
11Lorsque Josias entendit le contenu du livre de la Loi, il déchira ses vêtements. 12Puis il convoqua le prêtre Hilqiya, Ahiqam, fils de Shaphân, Akbor, fils de Michée, Shaphân, le secrétaire et Asaya, l’un des ministres.
13– Allez consulter l’Eternel pour moi, leur dit-il, ainsi que pour le peuple et pour tout Juda, au sujet des enseignements de ce livre que l’on vient de retrouver. Car la colère de l’Eternel est bien grande. Elle s’est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos ancêtres n’ont pas obéi aux paroles de ce livre et n’ont pas appliqué tout ce qui y est écrit.
14Alors le prêtre Hilqiya, Ahiqam, Akbor, Shaphân et Asaya se rendirent chez la prophétesse Houlda, femme de Shalloum, fils de Tiqva, petit-fils de Harhas, responsable du vestiaire du Temple. Elle habitait à Jérusalem dans le nouveau quartier. Ils lui exposèrent la situation. 15Alors Houlda leur dit : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : « Annoncez à l’homme qui vous a envoyés à moi : 16L’Eternel dit : Je vais faire venir un malheur sur cette contrée et sur ses habitants : tout ce qui est prévu dans le livre que vient de lire le roi de Juda. 17En effet, parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné et qu’ils ont fait brûler des parfums à d’autres dieux, et parce qu’ils m’ont ainsi irrité par toute leur conduite, ma colère s’est enflammée contre ce lieu et elle n’est pas près de s’apaiser. 18Mais vous direz au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l’Eternel : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Tu as entendu les paroles contenues dans ce livre. 19Ton cœur s’est laissé toucher, tu t’es humilié devant moi en entendant ce que j’ai décrété contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants, à savoir la dévastation et la malédiction. Tu as déchiré tes vêtements et tu as pleuré devant moi. De mon côté, moi aussi, j’ai entendu ta prière – l’Eternel le déclare ! 20C’est pourquoi je te ferai rejoindre tes ancêtres décédés et tu seras déposé paisiblement dans l’un de tes tombeaux, sans avoir vu tout le malheur que je vais amener sur cette contrée. »
Les envoyés rapportèrent cette réponse au roi.
