1In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah. 2He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 3And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did. 4Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.
5¶ And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the king his father. 6But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. 7He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.14.7 Selah: or, the rock
8¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. 9And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle. 10Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?14.10 at home: Heb. at thy house 11But Amaziah would not hear. 15¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 16And Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.
17¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years. 18And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 19Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there. 20And they brought him on horses: and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.
21¶ And all the people of Judah took Azariah, which was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.14.21 Azariah: also called, Uzziah 22He built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
23¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years. 24And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 25He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gath-hepher. 26For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel. 27And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
28¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 29And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead.

(2. Chronik 25,1‒4.11‒12)
1Amazja, Joaschs Sohn, wurde König von Juda im 2. Regierungsjahr König Joaschs von Israel, der ein Sohn von Joahas war. 2Er wurde mit 25 Jahren König und regierte 29 Jahre in Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Joaddan und stammte aus Jerusalem. 3Amazja tat, was dem Herrn gefiel, aber er diente ihm nicht so treu wie sein Vorfahre David. Stattdessen folgte er ganz dem Vorbild seines Vaters Joasch. 4So blieben die Götzenopferstätten auch unter Amazjas Herrschaft bestehen, und das Volk brachte dort weiterhin seine Opfer dar.
5Sobald Amazja die Herrschaft fest in Händen hatte, ließ er die Diener hinrichten, die seinen Vater, König Joasch, ermordet hatten. 6Ihre Söhne jedoch ließ er am Leben und folgte so dem Gebot des Herrn, wie es im Gesetzbuch von Mose steht: »Eltern sollen nicht für die Verbrechen ihrer Kinder hingerichtet werden und Kinder nicht für die Schuld ihrer Eltern. Jeder soll nur für seine eigene Sünde bestraft werden.«14,6 5. Mose 24,16
7Amazja fügte den Edomitern eine schwere Niederlage zu. 10.000 feindliche Soldaten fielen in der Schlacht im Salztal. Außerdem eroberte Amazja in diesem Krieg die Stadt Sela und nannte sie Jokteel. So heißt sie noch heute.

(2. Chronik 25,17‒24)
8Nach diesem Sieg schickte Amazja Boten zu König Joasch von Israel, dem Sohn von Joahas und Enkel von Jehu. Sie sollten ihm ausrichten: »Lass uns gegeneinander Krieg führen! Dann sehen wir, wessen Heer stärker ist!« 9Joasch, der König von Israel, ließ ihm antworten: »Ein Dornstrauch auf dem Libanongebirge sagte einmal zu einer mächtigen Zeder: ›Gib meinem Sohn deine Tochter zur Frau!‹ Doch die Tiere auf dem Libanon liefen über den Dornstrauch und zertrampelten ihn. 10Gewiss, du hast die Edomiter geschlagen, aber das ist dir wohl zu Kopf gestiegen! Bleib lieber zu Hause und genieße deinen Sieg! Warum willst du ins Unglück rennen und ganz Juda mit hineinreißen?« 11Doch Amazja ließ sich nicht warnen. Da zog König Joasch von Israel mit seinem Heer nach Juda, und bei Bet-Schemesch kam es zur Schlacht zwischen ihm und König Amazja. 12Die Judäer wurden von den Israeliten besiegt und flohen nach Hause. 13König Amazja von Juda, der Sohn von Joasch und Enkel von Ahasja, wurde vom israelitischen König noch in Bet-Schemesch gefangen genommen. Anschließend rückte Joasch bis nach Jerusalem vor und ließ die Stadtmauer auf einer Länge von 200 Metern einreißen, vom Ephraimtor bis zum Ecktor. 14Er plünderte alles Gold und Silber und alle kostbaren Gegenstände aus den Schatzkammern des Tempels und des Königspalasts. Mit dieser Beute und einer Anzahl von Geiseln kehrte er nach Samaria zurück.

15Alles Weitere über Joaschs Leben ist in der Chronik der Könige von Israel festgehalten. Dort kann man nachlesen, wie er regierte und welche Feldzüge er unternahm. Auch sein Krieg gegen König Amazja von Juda ist dort beschrieben. 16Als Joasch starb, wurde er in Samaria im Grab der Könige von Israel beigesetzt. Sein Sohn Jerobeam wurde an seiner Stelle König.

(2. Chronik 25,25–26,2)
17Nach dem Tod von Joasch, dem König von Israel, lebte Amazja, der König von Juda, noch fünfzehn Jahre. 18Alles Weitere über Amazjas Leben steht in der Chronik der Könige von Juda. 19Als in Jerusalem eine Verschwörung gegen ihn angezettelt wurde, konnte er zwar nach Lachisch entkommen. Aber die Verschwörer ließen ihn verfolgen, und so wurde er schließlich in Lachisch umgebracht. 20Man lud den Toten auf ein Pferd und brachte ihn zur »Stadt Davids«, einem Stadtteil von Jerusalem. Dort wurde er im Grab der Königsfamilie beigesetzt.
21Die Judäer ernannten Amazjas Sohn Asarja zum neuen König. Er war damals 16 Jahre alt. 22Gleich nach dem Tod seines Vaters eroberte er die Stadt Elat zurück und baute sie wieder auf.

König Jerobeam von Israel
23Jerobeam, der Sohn König Joaschs von Israel, wurde König von Israel im 15. Regierungsjahr König Amazjas von Juda, des Sohnes von Joasch. Jerobeam regierte 41 Jahre in Samaria. 24Er tat, was dem Herrn missfiel, und behielt den Götzendienst bei, zu dem Jerobeam, der Sohn von Nebat, die Israeliten verführt hatte. 25Jerobeam konnte alle Gebiete zurückerobern, die früher zu Israel gehört hatten, von Lebo-Hamat bis ans Tote Meer.
Damit erfüllte sich, was der Herr, der Gott Israels, angekündigt hatte. Durch seinen Diener, den Propheten Jona aus Gat-Hefer, einen Sohn von Amittai14,25 Vgl. Jona 1,1., hatte er es den Israeliten vorausgesagt. 26Denn der Herr hatte gesehen, wie elend es den Israeliten erging: Freie und Sklaven – alle mussten leiden, und weit und breit war niemand, der Israel helfen konnte. 27Weil der Herr das Volk Israel nicht auslöschen wollte, half er ihnen nun durch Jerobeam, den Sohn von Joasch.
28Jerobeams weiteres Leben, seine Feldzüge und militärischen Erfolge sind in der Chronik der Könige von Israel beschrieben. Dort kann man nachlesen, wie er die Städte Damaskus und Hamat mit den dazugehörigen Gebieten zurückeroberte. Diese beiden Städte hatten zur Zeit Davids noch zum Reich Israel gehört. 29Als Jerobeam starb, wurde er bei den Königen von Israel begraben. Sein Sohn Secharja wurde zum Nachfolger bestimmt.
