1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. 2And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4¶ And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.24.4 to repair: Heb. to renew 5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not. 6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness? 7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim. 8And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD. 9And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.24.9 a proclamation: Heb. a voice 10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end. 11Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD. 13So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.24.13 the work…: Heb. the healing went up upon the work 14And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. 15¶ But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died. 16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house. 17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them. 18And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass. 19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. 20And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.24.20 came…: Heb. clothed 21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. 22Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. ユダの王ヨアシュ
1ヨアシュは七歳で王となり、四十年間、エルサレムで治めました。母親はツィブヤといい、ベエル・シェバの出身でした。 2ヨアシュ王は、祭司エホヤダが生きている間は、主を喜ばせようと一生懸命に努めました。 3エホヤダは彼に二人の妻をめとらせ、息子や娘たちが生まれました。
4そののち、王は神殿の修復を思い立ち、 5祭司やレビ人を召集して命じました。「神殿をりっぱなものに修復するため、ユダのすべての町々へ行って献金を集めなさい。さっそく取りかかるのだ。ぐずぐずしてはならない。」ところが、レビ人はなかなか腰を上げようとしませんでした。
6王は大祭司エホヤダを呼びました。「なぜ、ユダの町々やエルサレムから神殿税を集めるために、レビ人を送らないのか。神殿の修復用に主のしもべモーセの決めた納税のおきては、ぜひ実施しなければならない。」
7-8というのは、あの悪女アタルヤの取り巻きたちが神殿を荒らし、神の礼拝のためにささげられたものを、バアルの神殿に用いたからです。そこで、王は一つの箱を作って、それを神殿の門の外側に置くよう指示しました。 9それから、神のしもべモーセが課した税を神殿に持って来るようにとの布告を、ユダのすべての町々とエルサレムに出しました。 10すると、すべての指導者、すべての民がわれ先にと献金を投げ入れたので、箱はすぐいっぱいになりました。 11レビ人が箱を王の会計室に運ぶと、王の書記官と祭司長に仕える管理人とが金額を計算し、からになった箱をまた元の場所に戻しました。同じことが毎日くり返されました。 12王とエホヤダは、集まった献金を修復工事の監督者に渡しました。彼らはそれで石工や大工、鉄や青銅の器具を作る鋳造師を雇いました。 13こうして工事は進み、ついに神殿は前よりもりっぱになりました。 14工事が完成すると、余った献金が王とエホヤダに手渡されたので、彼らはそれを、金銀のさじ、香をたく金銀の鉢、いけにえをささげるための器具を作る費用にあてました。祭司エホヤダの生きている間、焼き尽くすいけにえは一日も欠かさずにささげられました。
15エホヤダは非常に長生きしましたが、百三十歳で死に、 16ダビデの町の王室墓地に王たちとともに葬られました。彼はイスラエルのため、神のため、そして神殿のために、多くの良いことを行いました。
17-18しかし、エホヤダの死後、ユダの指導者たちはヨアシュ王を悪の道に誘い込みました。王に、父祖の神、主の神殿を捨て、恥ずべき偶像を拝むようにしむけたので、神の怒りが再びユダとエルサレムに下りました。 19神は、彼らが主に立ち返るように預言者を遣わしましたが、だれも耳を貸そうとしませんでした。 20その時、神の霊が祭司エホヤダの子ゼカリヤに臨みました。ゼカリヤは民の前に立って言いました。「あなたがたはなぜ主の戒めに背いているのか、神様はそのわけを知りたいと言っておられる。こんなことでは、何をしても失敗に終わるだけだ。あなたがたが主を捨てたので、今度は主があなたがたをお見捨てになる。」
21ところが、指導者たちはゼカリヤを殺そうと謀り、ヨアシュ王の命令により、神殿の庭でゼカリヤを殺しました。 22こうしてヨアシュ王は、エホヤダの愛と忠誠に対して、彼の子を殺害するという悪をもって報いたのです。ゼカリヤは死に際し、「主よ、彼らがしていることをごらんになり、彼らの悪に報いてください」と言い残しました。
23その二、三か月後、シリヤ（アラム）軍がユダとエルサレムに進攻してきました。彼らはユダの指導者を一人残らず殺し、大量の戦利品をダマスコへ持ち帰りました。 24シリヤ軍は少数でありながら大勝利を収めたのです。ユダの大軍が少数のシリヤ軍に負けたのは、ユダの民が父祖の神、主を捨てたからにほかなりません。こうして、神はヨアシュ王にきびしいさばきを下したのです。 25シリヤ軍が重傷を負ったヨアシュを置き去りにして引き揚げた時、彼の家来たちは、祭司エホヤダの子を殺した責任を問うために王を暗殺し、ダビデの町に葬りました。ただ、そこは王室墓地ではありませんでした。 26この謀反を企てたのは、アモン出身の女シムアテの子ザバデと、モアブ出身の女シムリテの子エホザバデでした。
27ヨアシュ王の子たちのこと、王に臨んだのろいのこと、神殿の修復のことについては、『諸王の年代記』にくわしく記されています。ヨアシュが死んだのち、その子アマツヤが新しく王となりました。
