1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. 2And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4¶ And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.24.4 to repair: Heb. to renew 5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not. 6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness? 7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim. 8And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD. 9And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.24.9 a proclamation: Heb. a voice 10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end. 11Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD. 13So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.24.13 the work…: Heb. the healing went up upon the work 14And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. 15¶ But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died. 16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house. 17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them. 18And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass. 19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. 20And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.24.20 came…: Heb. clothed 21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD. 22Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. Joas, koning van Juda
1Joas was zeven jaar toen hij koning werd en regeerde veertig jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder was Zibja en kwam uit Berseba. 2Joas leefde zoals de Here het wilde, zolang de priester Jojada in leven was. 3Jojada regelde twee huwelijken voor hem en Joas kreeg zonen en dochters.
4Enige tijd later besloot Joas dat de tempel van de Here hoognodig moest worden gerestaureerd. 5Hij riep de priesters en de Levieten bij zich en gaf hun de volgende instructies: ‘Breng een bezoek aan alle steden van Juda en haal het jaarlijkse geld bijeen voor het bouwfonds, zodat we de tempel in een goede staat kunnen houden. Wacht daar niet mee, doe het nu.’ Maar de Levieten namen er alle tijd voor. 6Daarop riep de koning de hogepriester Jojada bij zich en vroeg hem: ‘Waarom hebt u er niet op gelet dat de Levieten op tijd de tempelbelasting gingen innen in de steden van Juda en in Jeruzalem? De belastingwet van Mozes, de dienaar van de Here, moet worden nageleefd om de tempel te kunnen opknappen.’ 7-8 De goddeloze Athalia en haar zonen hadden flinke beschadigingen aan de tempel toegebracht en hadden alle voorwerpen die aan de verering van God waren gewijd, overgebracht naar de tempel van de Baäls. De koning gaf opdracht een kist te maken die buiten de tempelpoort moest komen te staan. 9Daarna ontvingen alle steden van Juda en alle inwoners van Jeruzalem de mededeling dat zij de belastingsom die Mozes, de dienaar van God, Israël had opgelegd, naar de Here moesten brengen. 10En alle leiders en burgers waren blij, brachten het geld en deden het in de kist tot die helemaal vol zat. 11De Levieten brachten de kist regelmatig naar de financiële ambtenaren van de koning, waar de secretaris van de koning en de vertegenwoordiger van de hogepriester het geld telden, waarna zij de kist weer mee terugnamen naar de tempel. Dit gebeurde elke dag, zo bleef het geld binnenstromen. 12De koning en Jojada overhandigden het geld aan de bouwopzichters, die daarvan metselaars en timmerlui huurden om de verwoeste delen van de tempel te vernieuwen. Tevens werden smeden aangetrokken die de ijzeren en koperen voorwerpen moesten vervaardigen. 13Het werk vorderde gestaag en ten slotte was het huis van God in de oude staat hersteld en bovendien hier en daar verstevigd. 14Na voltooiing van de werkzaamheden werd het resterende geld naar de koning en Jojada gebracht, die overeenkwamen dat dat geld moest worden gebruikt voor de vervaardiging van gouden en zilveren lepels en schalen die voor het reukwerk werden gebruikt en voor de vervaardiging van de instrumenten die nodig waren voor de offerdienst. Zolang de priester Jojada leefde, werden voortdurend brandoffers voor de Here gebracht. 15Jojada bereikte een erg hoge leeftijd en stierf toen hij honderddertig jaar oud was. 16Hij werd begraven in de Stad van David, tussen de koningen, omdat hij veel goeds had gedaan voor Israël, voor God en voor de tempel.
17-18 Maar na de dood van Jojada kwamen de leiders van Juda bij koning Joas om hem te eren en zij verleidden hem ertoe de tempel van de God van hun voorouders de rug toe te keren en in plaats daarvan schandelijke afgodsbeelden te gaan vereren. Daarom richtte de toorn van God zich opnieuw op Juda en Jeruzalem, vanwege de schuld die zij op zich hadden geladen. 19God stuurde daarom profeten die hen weer moesten terugbrengen bij de Here, maar niemand wilde naar hen luisteren. 20Toen kwam de Geest van God over Zacharia, de zoon van Jojada. Hij belegde een bijeenkomst voor alle burgers en zei: ‘God wil weten waarom u zijn geboden niet gehoorzaamt. Want als u dat niet doet, zal alles mislukken wat u wilt ondernemen. U hebt de Here verlaten en nu heeft Hij u ook verlaten.’ 21Het volk beraamde toen een plan om Zacharia te vermoorden en uiteindelijk gaf koning Joas zelf het bevel dat hij moest worden gestenigd op het voorplein van de tempel. 22Op die manier ‘beloonde’ koning Joas Jojada voor zijn liefde en trouw: hij doodde zijn zoon. Zachariaʼs laatste woorden voor zijn terechtstelling waren: ‘Here, kijk naar wat zij doen en zet het hun betaald.’
23Rond de jaarwisseling vielen daarom de Syriërs het land binnen en veroverden Juda en Jeruzalem. Zij doodden alle leiders van het land en stuurden de hele buit naar de koning van Damascus. 24Dat was een groot succes voor het kleine Syrische leger, maar de Here zorgde ervoor dat de Syriërs het veel grotere leger van Juda overwonnen, omdat zij de Here, de God van hun voorouders, de rug hadden toegekeerd. Op die manier voltrok God het vonnis over Joas. 25Toen de Syriërs zich terugtrokken en Joas zwaargewond achterlieten, besloten zijn eigen medewerkers hem te doden omdat hij de zoon van de priester Jojada had laten vermoorden. Zij vermoordden hem terwijl hij in bed lag en begroeven hem in de Stad van David, maar niet op de koninklijke begraafplaats. 26De samenzweerders waren Zabad, de zoon van de Ammonitische vrouw Simeath, en Jozabad, de zoon van de Moabitische vrouw Simrith. 27Wie meer wil weten over de zonen van Joas, de vervloekingen die op Joas rustten en de restauratie van de tempel, kan daarover lezen in het Boek over de Koningen. Na Joasʼ dood werd zijn zoon Amazia koning.
