1Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead. 2And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah: all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. 3And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn. 4Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.
5¶ Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD. 7Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.21.7 light: Heb. lamp, or, candle
8¶ In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.21.8 dominion: Heb. hand 9Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the chariots. 10So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had forsaken the LORD God of his fathers. 11Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.
12¶ And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah, 13But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than thyself: 14Behold, with a great plague will the LORD smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:21.14 a great…: Heb. a great stroke 15And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
16¶ Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians: 17And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king’s house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.21.17 carried…: Heb. carried captive21.17 Jehoahaz: also called, Ahaziah, or, Azariah
18¶ And after all this the LORD smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease. 19And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers. 20Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. 1Josaphat rejoignit ses ancêtres décédés, et il fut enseveli auprès d’eux dans la Cité de David, et son fils Yoram lui succéda sur le trône.
Yoram, roi de Juda
2Yoram avait plusieurs frères : Azaria, Yehiel, Zacharie, Azaria, Michaël et Shephatia, tous fils de Josaphat, roi d’Israël. 3Leur père leur avait fait de nombreux cadeaux, de l’argent, de l’or et des objets précieux ; de plus, il leur avait confié le gouvernement de plusieurs villes fortifiées en Juda ; mais c’est à Yoram qu’il avait conféré la royauté parce qu’il était l’aîné.
4Dès que Yoram fut en possession du royaume de son père et qu’il eut affermi son pouvoir, il fit assassiner tous ses frères ainsi que des dirigeants d’Israël.

5Yoram avait trente-deux ans à son avènement et il régna huit ans à Jérusalem21.5 De 848 à 841 av. J.-C. (voir note 2 R 8.17).. 6Il suivit l’exemple des rois d’Israël21.6 C’est-à-dire du royaume du Nord, en particulier leur idolâtrie (voir 1 R 12.28-33 ; 16.31-32)., agissant comme la dynastie d’Achab, car il avait épousé une fille d’Achab21.6 Athalie (voir 22.2).. Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal. 7Pourtant, l’Eternel ne voulut pas détruire la dynastie de David, à cause de l’alliance qu’il avait conclue avec David à qui il avait promis que ses descendants régneraient pour toujours21.7 Voir 1 Ch 17.10-14 ; 2 Ch 6.16 ; 7.18 ; 1 R 11.36..
8Sous le règne de Yoram, les Edomites se révoltèrent contre la domination de Juda et se donnèrent un roi21.8 Voir Gn 27.40.. 9Alors Yoram partit avec ses officiers et tous ses chars de guerre. En pleine nuit, il tomba sur les Edomites qui l’avaient déjà encerclé et il les battit, ainsi que les chefs des chars. 10Depuis lors, Edom fut en révolte contre Juda, et l’est toujours. A la même époque, Libna se révolta également contre la domination de Yoram parce qu’il avait abandonné l’Eternel, le Dieu de ses ancêtres.
11Il construisit même des hauts lieux sur les montagnes de Juda : il incita les habitants de Jérusalem à l’idolâtrie et entraîna les Judéens au mal. 12C’est alors qu’une lettre du prophète Elie lui parvint. Elle disait : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, le Dieu de David, ton ancêtre : « Tu n’as pas suivi l’exemple de ton père Josaphat, et celui d’Asa, roi de Juda. 13Au contraire, tu as imité la conduite des rois d’Israël ; tu as incité les Judéens et les habitants de Jérusalem à l’idolâtrie, suivant l’exemple d’idolâtrie de la maison d’Achab. Tu es même allé jusqu’à assassiner tes frères, membres de ta famille, qui étaient meilleurs que toi. 14C’est pourquoi l’Eternel frappera d’un terrible fléau ton peuple, tes fils, tes femmes et tous tes biens. 15Quant à toi, tu seras atteint de maladies graves, et en particulier d’une maladie au ventre qui empirera de jour en jour au point de faire sortir tes intestins hors de ton ventre. »
16L’Eternel excita contre Yoram l’hostilité des Philistins et des Arabes voisins des Ethiopiens. 17Ils attaquèrent Juda, envahirent le pays, emportèrent toutes les richesses accumulées dans le palais du roi et emmenèrent ses fils et ses femmes en captivité, de sorte qu’il ne lui resta plus qu’un fils, Yoahaz, le cadet.
18Après tout cela, l’Eternel frappa Yoram d’une maladie intestinale incurable. 19Elle empira de jour en jour, et vers la fin de la seconde année, le mal fit sortir ses intestins de son ventre, de sorte qu’il mourut dans d’atroces souffrances. Le peuple n’alluma pas de brasier en son honneur comme il l’avait fait pour ses ancêtres21.19 Voir 2 Ch 16.14..
20Yoram avait trente-deux ans à son avènement et il régna huit ans à Jérusalem21.20 Voir note 21.5.. Il partit sans être regretté par personne. On l’enterra dans la Cité de David, mais pas dans les tombeaux des rois.
